SECRET INVASTION Writer/Producer Explains Decision To Kill-Off Cobie Smulders' Maria Hill

Marvel Studios' most recent Disney+ series, Secret Invasion, wasted no time in establishing some pretty big stakes by killing off a popular supporting character at the end of its season premiere.

Though she only made a few sporadic appearances over the years, Maria Hill (Cobie Smulders) had been an MCU mainstay since the first Avengers movie, and returned to Nick Fury's side once again to help him face the threat of a Skrull invasion.

Unfortunately, Hill was gunned down by the ruthless Gravik after a devastating Skrull bomb attack in Russia, dying in Fury's arms.

On the latest episode of Disney+'s behind-the-scenes show, Marvel Studios Assembled, Secret Invasion executive producer and writer Brian Tucker explains the decision to take Hill off the board so early.

“One of the kind of just most important decisions that we had to make early on was to really illustrate the scale and the reality of the danger that Gravik and his rebels pose to humans. And to do that, we couldn’t allow all of our characters to make it out safely. This is a contest for the planet. It’s being fought on the ground and it’s gonna be bloody. There will be casualties in this conflict, and that means making those tough decisions to say goodbye to beloved characters.”

Marvel Studios projects have often been accused of playing it too safe - especially with the recent advent of the Multiverse - so it's understandable that Secret Invasion would attempt to shake things up a little. However, killing off Ben Mendelsohn's Talos in a later episode was viewed by many fans as unnecessary, since Fury already had plenty of motivation to defeat Gravik after Hill's demise.

Director Ali Selim confirmed that, as far as he's concerned, both characters will remain dead in a recent interview.

"I don't know what's going to happen to Maria Hill or Talos. They're dead. One is burned, and the other is buried. But in the MCU, anything can happen. So, where are they going to end up? I don't know."

How did you feel about the deaths of Maria Hill and Talos in Secret Invasion? Be sure to share your thoughts in the comments section down below.

"In Marvel Studios’ new series Secret Invasion, set in the present day MCU, Nick Fury learns of a clandestine invasion of Earth by a faction of shapeshifting Skrulls. Fury joins his allies, including Everett Ross, Maria Hill and the Skrull Talos, who has made a life for himself on Earth. Together they race against time to thwart an imminent Skrull invasion and save humanity."

The series stars Samuel L. Jackson, Ben Mendelsohn, Cobie Smulders, Martin Freeman, Kingsley Ben-Adir, Charlayne Woodard, Killian Scott, Samuel Adewunmi, Dermot Mulroney, Christopher McDonald, Katie Finneran, with Emilia Clarke, Olivia Colman, and Don Cheadle.

Ali Selim directs and executive-produces, along with fellow executive producers Kevin Feige, Jonathan Schwartz, Louis D’Esposito, Victoria Alonso, Brad Winderbaum, Samuel L. Jackson, Ali Selim, Kyle Bradstreet and Brian Tucker. Kyle Bradstreet is also the head writer, and Jennifer L. Booth, Allana Williams and Brant Englestein serve as co-executive producers.

I can't get over how this franchise made fun of the whole "hero vs enemy with hero's powers" fight a mere year ago, then do that exact thing for this.

@eddyxx - that’s how I feel about that whole tv series. It’s not canon as far as I’m concerned and until the movies acknowledge it, it didn’t happen.

Because it was a pointless character that had about 5 minutes of screen time over the last 15 years, but it would feel like it carried weight because of her legacy in the comics?

At least Jimmy Olsen got disrespected on the big screen. Maria Hill got killed on a low budget TV show that no one watched.

But who's decision was it to make nick fury a complete hypocrite?

"We can't rely on the avengers, with their aliens and superpowers to save the world. We need to do this ourselves. And we'll do this by giving superpowers to an alien to do the fighting for us."

@Origame - Remember that time you tried to say this show wasn't about a "secret invasion" just for the sake of arguing? 😂
Origame
Origame - 9/25/2023, 10:26 AM
@Variant - remember when you throw out completely off topic things I say to give an ad hominem attack on me instead of arguing my actual points?

Oh wait, that's all you do now.🤣

I've long since addressed that point, and it wasn't even the main point I was making back then, that it was purposely made to not be like the comics since the writers admitted to not reading it.

You chose to argue its fine because the title was technically right. You're such a fanboy, having a title make sense is the bar 🤣

@Origame - "We can't rely on the avengers, with their aliens and superpowers to save the world".

Wasn't he the guy that thought that the avengers were necessary to save the world in their first movie? What changed besides the tv budget not allowing Disney+ to use Hemsworth, Larson, Cumberbatch, Holland, Ruffallo, etc for this show?
Origame
Origame - 9/25/2023, 11:17 AM
@SethBullock - what changed is that they hire writers who don't give a f@#$ about what came before.

And of course they rely on people like our variant friend here to white knight for them rather than write something that makes even basic sense.

@Origame - also: “I have to fix this problem myself because I caused it and it is my responsibility”

To

“We’ll things are way worse now than they ever were. Time to go back up to space and it’ll probably work itself out.”

Terrible.
Origame
Origame - 9/25/2023, 12:21 PM
@MrDandy - funny thing is the state of the world post show sounds like a much more interesting show. In fact it's basically the comics storyline.

But when we get there, fury's just like "peace" and off to space for the marvels.

@Origame - Just take your L's and move it along. Mr. "Cat calling isn't objectively bad."

😂
Origame
Origame - 9/26/2023, 2:47 PM
@Variant - yeah, I'm not gonna be dragged down into arguments from the past.

Because that's all you know how to do. It's not about being right. It's about "owning" your opposition, even if it's based on arguments that have nothing to do with the current discussion.

Your strategy is as transparent as it is pathetic.

And what's worse is you're basically defending a show you've previously claimed to not like. Your fanboy behaviors are super clear now 🤣

It was lame but at least that was one less person in the show telling Fury he's past it and useless.

I wanted this series to be good so badly, but that was what it was, bad, very bad. Extremely disappointed and the decision to kill off Maria Hill was absolutely stupid and that is about as nice as I want to be about it.

Show was awful and fridging Maria Hill was just the first of many terrible decisions.
