DOCTOR STRANGE Star Chiwetel Ejiofor & Others Join Charlize Theron In Netflix's THE OLD GUARD

With Sony's planned Silver and Black movie stuck in limbo for the time being, it was recently announced that director Gina Prince-Bythewood (Cloak and Dagger, The Secret Life of Bees) had lined up another project: a Netflix adaptation of Greg Rucka and Leandro Fernandez's sci-fi action comic series, The Old Guard.

Charlize Theron (Mad Max: Fury Road) and If Beale Street Could Talk breakout KiKi Layne have already been cast as the leads, and now Deadline reports that Chiwetel Ejiofor (Doctor Strange), Harry Melling (The Ballad Of Buster Scruggs) and Veronica Ngo (Bright) have also signed on in supporting roles.

For those unfamiliar with the story, here's a synopsis:

"The Old Guard focuses on a small group of soldiers, led by a woman named Andy, who are inexplicably immortal and have been working as mercenaries through the ages. The novelty of not dying long gone, the group gets a jolt in their bones when they discover the existence of a new immortal, a black woman serving in the Marines, at the same time as a nefarious organization captures their undying actions on camera."

The Old Guard will be produced by Skydance’s David Ellison, Dana Goldberg, and Don Granger, along with Theron, Beth Kono and AJ Dix for Denver and Delilah; and Marc Evans. Rucka is penning the script himself.

Tell us, have you read this Image comic? If so, are you excited about the series being adapted for Netflix? Sound off in the comments.

Chiwetel Ejiofor is a world class actor imo ... he really brings in almost all of his roles....

@knocturnalzen10 - Agreed. Can't wait to see what they do with him as Mordo. He was a great casting choice.

As dope as this sounds and the cast is stacked, I really hope that it doesn’t pile up in the collection of forgettable films Netflix has in its catalog and can actually stand out.

And that’s not to say that they don’t have good movies, they have some absolute fantastic ones, but amongst those there’s always dozens more of the forgettable

Still waiting for Chiwetel’s next powerhouse performance after 12 Years a Slave. The dude is phenomenal.

@regularmovieguy - 2013 was such a good year for male performances that Chiwetel and DiCaprio lost for career-best performances, and Joaquin Phoenix (her) and Oscar Isaac (Inside Llewyn Davis) weren't even nominated despite giving amazing performances. Speaking of that, I hope Isaac does another film like Davis, dude was amazing in that and he's kind of been on auto-pilot recently.

Goddammit. I had a long, well thought out response to your comment and somehow it "canceled."

Anyway, I agree with all that. 2013 was an excellent year for Lead Actors. And movies while we're at it. Don't think I've been impressed with Isaac since ILD despite how much traction his career has gained.

Wonder if he's still up for a role in the Batman movie?

@regularmovieguy - Isaac was great in A Most Violent Year and especially Ex_Machina. He had such little to do in Star Wars, Annihilation and the less said about Ivan Oozpocalypse the better. He also had certified duds like Life Itself... yeah.
He'd be a dope Harvey Dent, hopefully he has some solid material to work with again. Excited to see him in Dune.

Also OT but did you see that show on Hulu produced by Lonely Island? It's called Pen15 and I binged it all in one go, really funny stuff.

Ex Machina, he was great. But i haven’t seen him own a lead role like he did in ILD. He’s always good bu he was fantastic in that role imo and carried the movie:

And NO! Haven’t heard of it until now but I’ll definitely check it out.

And my god I sat through Life Itself with my gf because she loves This Is Us the tv show....

My god what a horrible movie...I was trying not to laugh through most of it.

For a second I read Old Man's Guard, thought this was about Scalzi's book adaptation, and got really excited...

We'll need to keep waiting I guess.
