STRANGER THINGS Season 3 Breaks Netflix's Viewership Records With Massive Global Launch Numbers

Stranger Things continues to be a hit for Netflix, as Season 3 of the hit sci-fi original series has racked up record-breaking launch numbers for the streaming giant over its July 4th weekend premiere.

Netflix doesn't typically dive deep into the metrics of their shows, but every now and then the streaming giant does offer some insight into its viewership numbers - especially if a show is doing particularly well. The latest is Stranger Things, which launched its third season on July 4. Taking to social media, Netflix acknowledged some record breaking numbers for the hit sci-fi original series.

As of July 8, a record 40.7 million household accounts have watched at least some of Stranger Things Season 3. That's more than any other Netflix film or series in its first four days.

As Netflix previously clarified, it counts a "view" as someone who watched at least 70 percent of one episode. Perhaps that's why they added the additional stat that 18.2 million have already finished all eight episodes in the season.
To put these numbers into perspective, The Umbrella Academy was viewed by 45 million household accounts in one month, while the Jennifer Aniston and Adam Sander comedy Murder Mystery was watched by over 30 million accounts in the first three days of its release; that was the "biggest opening weekend ever" for a Netflix original film. Back in December, Bird Box, the thriller starring Sandra Bullock, was watched by 45 million accounts over the course of a week; that was the best first seven days ever for a Netflix film.

Clearly, Stranger Things still remains one of Netflix's most popular series. That said, Season 3 currently sits at a 91 percent (87 percent audience score) on Rotten Tomatoes. Both are the lowest of the three seasons, so should that be cause for concern for Netflix and the future of its hit show?

@MarvelDCAllDay - Seriously! For me:

1. Season 3
2. Season 1
3. Season 2

I am a proud part of those 18.2 million that binged Season 3 all night till 6 AM, first time I do that tbh and might be the only once in a lifetime.

Well deserved numbers and the RT score is fine, do not really see how it is any way a bad score of sorts.

It was fun as hell, but by far my least favorite season. Robin & Steve are an iconic duo though.

@WakandanQueen -

The Fantastic Four. I really liked their storyline, but i thought the main storyline was super boring and all the kid characters, besides Dustin and Erica, really got on my nerves.

I liked how creative and weird they got this season. Steve and Robin are the strongest this season, along with Eleven and Mike. I consider seasons 1 and 2 to be about the same level, I think this one dipped a bit, just some fluff I could have done without and they dragged it to the last episode. These 3 really annoyed me so much that any more episodes would have been painful to get through. Very annoying characters in my opinion and they were overused and had SO MANY lines. I cringed a lot when any of them were talking. Hope they change it up next season.

If they're going by watches rather than by accounts, I'm three of that 18.2M. I WANT MORE GODDAMMIT

Very impressed with S3. Ended perfectly, to the point where I want this to be the last season. Some shows just need to know when to conclude, and I feel S3 should be it.

But I know it won't. Netflix won't allow that, lol.

@KWilly - The Duffer Brothers want there to be 4 seasons, IIRC. They said so a while ago.

TBH I thought Mike was in parts of S2 a little mean more than he could possibly be in any way here considering he was most of the time rude to Max and not willing to let anyone else, in this case a girl, to the group after he thought Eleven was gone. (It’s why they called the character BTS in S2 as “emo Mike”) It mighty also do with the fact that Max is one of my faves too since she joined them in Halloween too. (Poor girl by the end of S3 though 😬)

But here he was basically at the beginning unfairly sabotaged by Hopper (the only shitty thing he did tbh) in stopping seeing Eleven all the time which backfired all over to him to the point of that hilarious break up scene. So for me Mike was fine in this Season compared to those little parts in S2.
