THE WITCHER Producer Likens Geralt Of Rivia Role To James Bond Following Henry Cavill Recasting

Over the weekend, Netflix announced that Henry Cavill will leave The Witcher, and the role of Geralt of Rivia, after the show's upcoming third season. The news has been met with a generally negative response online, and the news that The Hunger Games star Liam Hemsworth will take over the role has done little to calm irate fans down.

Both actors released statements praising each other (with Cavill giving Hemsworth his blessing), but we now have comments from one of The Witcher's executive producers. Taking to Facebook shortly after the news broke (via SFFGazette.com), Tomasz "Tomek" Bagiński compared playing Geralt to James Bond.

"I realize yesterday's announcement shocked at least as much as Elon's takeover of Twitter, but the world survived not such surprises," he said of the casting change. "The Witcher can make it. The third season is very strong. There are only a few years until the fourth."

"Bond and Batman discover something new and interesting with each change of appearance. We have the time. Geralt is in the same league."

Needless to say, there's been a lot of speculation online about what might have led to Cavill deciding to walk away from The Witcher. However, the truth may have been hiding in plain sight this entire time.

As you can see below, the Superman actor has previously said that he was committed to the show's seven-season plan. A self-confessed lover of Andrzej Sapkowski's novels and the games based on them, Cavill has also pointed out he wants to stay loyal to the source material. Unfortunately, it's become apparent The Witcher's creative team doesn't feel the same way.

We've had newly created villains, massive story changes, and even comments from a writer on the show who has said his fellow scribes actively disliked the books and games

As a result, while it's easy to blame Cavill's departure on him recently being enlisted to play the Man of Steel again, it seems likely he had significant issues with how The Witcher has progressed.

Someone post a Kevin Spacey "Wrong!" gif from Superman Returns for me. For one the shows not going on a break then coming back and 2 I'm pretty sure he'll be continuing the story that Henry started and not a new concept of the show/character.

I still haven’t gotten around to Season 2. Plan to one of these days.

How did it stack up to the first? I know the timeline jumps weren’t there, but how about the overall show?

@mountainman - Season 1 was much better.

@Rosraf - Oh no. I really just thought the first season was ok. I guess I won’t bother continuing with it if it’s worse than that.

@mountainman - I liked them both, but I definitely thought Season 1 was better.

@mountainman - Season 2 is better, HC is more comfortable as Geralt so he looks less awkward and acts better now. Better effects and more straightforward storytelling compared to the messy time jumps in S1.

I thought S2 is better than S1, problem now is that with a simpler and more straightforward narrative the show feels less complex now. so not as much rewatchability. S1 was fun because you didn't know when, where, and how all these episodes fit together in a narrative while S2 is just straightforward and cool nothing complex anymore.

@mountainman - season one had more nuance and grit, season 2 felt slightly off, though they actually stuck a lot closer to the source material in season 2. I prefer season 2 because Geralt actually feels like Geralt rather than pale white haired protagonist who grunts ands says [frick].

Geralt will be remembered as Cavill's greatest role. Too bad it didn't last longer.

Bold words considering you guys have a writer who hates the franchise and the fans.

I still find it funny that the Wither 3 "next gen upgrade" will be getting Henry Cavil DLC.

I think the Batman analogy is a mistake to point out. Only the Christopher Nolan Batman left on a high note. Every other Batman has fizzled out (Keaton, Kilmer and Clooney era), failed (Ben Affleck) or is too new tell (Pattinson)...and whatever it was that the CW was doing with a child Bruce Wayne was just garbage. That is not a great record for changing up Batman.

Wtf with all these directors comparing their main characters to other characters that really don’t share any similarities and audiences wouldn’t want to be similar…

@TheFireForce - He isn't saying the characters themselves are similar lol. He's saying that they can be recast because they are all characters known for having a series of movies/shows made about them.

Bond had over 20 films made about him before rebooting. Batman's longest series was 4 movies and had 3 different actors play Bruce. Witcher is planned to be 7 seasons, and he is willing to recast Geralt.

That's the similarity. He isn't comparing the characters themselves.

Imagine if they got Mads Mikkelsen as Geralt and Eva Green as Yen.

Heh, puny Mads, but still a Mads Man.

@Doomsday8888 -
Never really gotten to seen the extent of Mads performances as he's always typecast and wasted in roles.
