AHSOKA's Decision To Make Sabine A Jedi Blasted By STAR WARS REBELS Writer As "A Weak Retread"

Star Wars Rebels writer and executive producer Henry Gilroy explains why he had a problem with the Disney+ Ahsoka series making Sabine Force-sensitive...

Though the Disney+ Ahsoka series mainly focused on the adventures of the titular former Jedi (Rosario Dawson), it also served as a live-action continuation of the incredibly popular 2014 animated Star Wars Rebels show, reintroducing the likes of Hera Syndulla, Sabine Wren, Ezra Bridger, and the villainous Grand Admiral Thrawn

Rebels fans seemed fairly happy with the show overall, but some took issue with certain plot points and character changes. Most of the backlash seemed to stem from the decision to make Sabine Ahsoka's Padawan (trainee Jedi), since the Mandalorian explosives expert had already established herself as a formidable warrior in her own right.

As it turns out, Rebels writer and exec producer Henry Gilroy was never on board with making Sabine Force-sensitive (she isn't technically a Jedi) in the first place.

“It was absolutely not the plan," Gilroy tells the Protector of Concord Dawn podcast. "We really felt that not only did it step on Ezra’s story, it was a weak retread. We already did this. The idea of Sabine training as a Jedi when she is already this fantastic warrior of her own type, we felt like this is overkill"

"I had nothing to do with the Ahsoka series, so I was shocked," he added. "What I love about the story with the Darksaber is that you don't have to be a Jedi to have Jedi ideals. I think that's what's really the more important thing ... rather than Force pushing Ezra one hundred feet when [you've] never used the Force before"

It's difficult to argue with any of these points, even if you did enjoy the series and the Ahsoka/Sabine dynamic. With Ezra sidelined for most of the season, the writers evidently felt that a mentor/mentee relationship should still be at the forefront to mirror Tano's history with Anakin.

What do you make of Gilroy's take? Drop us a comment down below.

Hayden Christensen announced that he will return as Anakin Skywalker for the 8-episode second season during the Disney+ show's Star Wars Celebration panel in Tokyo, Japan. The actor reprised his iconic Star Wars prequels role in the first season, appearing to his former Padawan Ahsoka Tano when she became trapped in the "World Between Worlds" after a lightsaber duel with Baylan Skoll. Anakin served as a spirit guide, of a sort, forcing Ahsoka to confront her past and (potential) future.

Skywalker returned as a Force Ghost (presumably) in the season finale, watching over Ahsoka on Peridea, and we have heard that the character will have more to do in season 2.

Set after the fall of the Empire, Ahsoka follows the former Jedi knight Ahsoka Tano as she investigates an emerging threat to a vulnerable galaxy.

The series stars Rosario Dawson in the title role, with Natasha Liu Bordizzo as Sabine Wren, Mary Elizabeth Winstead as Hera Syndulla, Diana Lee Inosanto as Morgan Elsbeth, Ivanna Sakhno as Shin Hati, Ray Stevenson as Baylan Skoll, David Tennant as Huyang, Lars Mikkelsen as Grand Admiral Thrawn, with Eman Esfandi appearing as Ezra Bridger.

Ahoska is written by executive producer Dave Filoni, alongside executive producers Favreau, Kennedy, Wilson, and Beck. Gilchrist is co-executive producer. The series’ directors include Filoni, Steph Green, Peter Ramsey, Jennifer Getzinger, Geeta Vasant Patel and Rick Famuyiwa.

All episodes are now streaming on Disney+.

Her getting imapled like Qui Gon and surviving is just bullshit

@Matchesz - Qui Gon was lying on the floor for minutes. Maybe longer. Sabine was found immediately and taken to be treated.

@Mrnorth1921 - Yeah, but Sabine's a woman, so it's worse and unforgivable.

@Mrnorth1921 - And that inquisitor lady walked it off and kept it movin cuz...the dark side I guess. I've been receptive to Disney SW, but the liberties they take with the lore at times are jarring. They all should have died. It was done for shock value alone, which meant nothing because we knew Sabine wasn't gonna die. To me anyway, the allure of the darksaber was that anyone who was naturally gifted in the force could potentially wield it. Then, they dropped the ball with Finn so it looked like any mofo could just pick up a lightsaber and use it. Is he force sensitive, probably, but the story they told, or tried to tell, never warranted that leap. Instead, he was reduce to a Mulder Scully Jean Scott whine that lasted for 3 films. I don't disagree with you, but that could have been handled differently imo.

@Matchesz - QGJ was impaled through the center of his chest. The fact he survived long enough to talk to Obi Wan was a stretch.

Sabine was stabbed to the side of the abdomen. Kinda obvious that wasn’t a fatal wound like QG’s was.

@TheRevelation - inquisitor lady survived by sheer rage. Much like how the grand inquisitor survived. The show literally talked about this. Dark side can do this. Look at maul for goodness sake.

Sabine was saved because Ahsoka brought her to recieve medical treatment immediately. She was stabbed and then rescued.

@Mrnorth1921 - Yeah, I mentioned it, the dark side. I just didn't like the explanation. By the time we're at the end she's closer to a fallen Jedi more than anything. Yeah I get Anakin survived too, I mean Vader. I just think they could have gone another way about it. It just seemed like they were like she's gotta survive Vader mostly intact. I got it, stab her. Maul is purely Filoni's creation, with input from Lucas I'm sure, and he essentially went mad before mama got involved and saved him. Like I said in another comment, do you accept the canon before you or does the head one take over. I've let a lot of things go because SW is such an expansive universe potentially, and I admittedly don't have the time or interest to follow every last thing anymore. You clearly didn't take issue with it and that's fine. They could've leaned into her Mando side a bit more, but I personally liked Ahsoka and am looking forward to seeing where Peridea goes.

Star Wars is dead. The end.

What bothered me was how she treated animals. She left her alien cat to go with Ahsoka most likely letting it starve, then was a complete jerk to the dog alien she rode. She definitely didn’t show any heroic qualities to me in the show. I liked her better in the cartoon.

@AnthonyVonGeek - I hated how Ezra didnt give a damn that she solely allowed Thrawn to get back to the galaxy. Everything is on her and she is solely responsible for him once again reigning terror. Ezra's sacrifice at the end of Rebel's was made pointless.

lol “weak retread”

Definitely read that as something else

I kind of agree. Definitely takes away from Ezra’s story. Dilutes it a little. Sabine was already a badass and didn’t need to now also be trained to be a Jedi, out of nowhere. It felt a little forced and tbh they would have sold the same amount of Sabine toys either way, because she was already cool. Seems like anyone can train to be a Jedi even if you don’t have the force initially. Fake it til you make it.
TheVisionary25
TheVisionary25 - 11/19/2025, 7:56 PM
@LibraMatter - I get yah but The Force technically flows through everyone and binds the galaxy together which was the explanation before midichlorians so everyone has the force to some extent or the other already but may have a harder time accessing it like Sabine did
LibraMatter
LibraMatter - 11/20/2025, 1:51 AM
@TheVisionary25 - That’s interesting. Kind of cool but also takes the specialness away from the force. Good to know though. Glad it makes sense within cannon. I think I missed that.
TheRevelation
TheRevelation - 11/20/2025, 8:10 AM
@LibraMatter - I guess that's the thing ultimately, does it make sense within "head" canon?

I can definitely understand his issue since the reasoning is valid imo and I felt the same way honestly when I first saw it because she was already a capable warrior in her own right so didn’t make sense to me to make her Force sensitive aswell all of a sudden.

However after seeing the series and thinking about it , making her Ahsoka’s “Padawan” essentially worked due to how it parallelled her relationship with Anakin which was examined in the episode “Shadow Warrior” where all her fears , guilt and issues came to the forefront and were dealt with so then could she move forward and be a better teacher to Sabine hopefully…

It also allowed Sabine’s character to grow in a new way since Rebels itself did so much with her past & family history.

Anyway , I ended up liking the choice by Filoni at the end aswell as the show overall so looking forward to S2!!.

Id argue Ashoka is more of a Jedi than Luke, Rey or Ezra will ever be. She trained since she was a youngling, like any true Jedi should. Ppl gave Anakin shet for starting late, then swoon all over Luke who was basically an adult. Sabine just fits the mold that Disney is always trying to push, strong women. The shows literally named after Ashoka but they have to push their narrative any way they can. If Ashoka should be training anyone it should be Ezra.

The Ahsoka live action series was such a letdown and a complete downgrade from Rebels.

The mythos on the dark sabre, the inter dimensional portal and Ezra's special skills were all great only to be set aside by this Disneyfied slop

eh, i liked the series more than BOB, Acolyte, Skeleton Crew and season 3 of the Mandalorian, the last of the sequel movies and even Solo. So in terms of Disney's Star Wars ranking, it's in my top 3. I like Filoni, and whilst he's not written everything in rebels or Ashoka, he at least has a plan and has expanded the lore fare beyond what it once was. Though there's still a slight dependance on the Skywalkers, he's at least trying to branch it out with characters like Sabine, Ezra, Baylan, Hera etc.... So i'll be watching. A shame we lost Ray Stevenson, but the replacement seems just as good.

Agreed. There are supposed to be a few left and the show already featured five force users. Not everybody needs the force, especially Sabine not. She was already a great warrior in her own right, which was enough to wield the Darksaber too.
TheVisionary25
TheVisionary25 - 11/20/2025, 5:41 AM
@bkmeijer1 - there are not few Force Users left because not all Force users are Jedi…

Luke even says so in TLJ (I could only find the comic adaptation page though) which is an extension of Obi Wan saying that the Force is part of all living things essentially.

Plus Sabine is a descendant of Tarre Vizla who was the Mandalorian Jedi that had the Darksaber so makes sense she would have some Firce capability aswell.

bkmeijer1 - 11/20/2025, 9:55 AM
@TheVisionary25 - the way I saw it the Empire made sure the number of force users was limited too, but I could be wrong.

As for Sabine, is she a Tarre Vizsla descendant? I know Clan Wren is part of House Viszla, but that doesn't automatically mean blood relation. Although the inbred royals from medieval Europe might disagree.

@bkmeijer1 - I’m pretty sure

Also I found this article and there more hints to Sabine being force sensitive in Rebels then even I remember…

@TheVisionary25 - that's a solid case you got there. Still, I don't feel like it was necessary to have her as another force user on the show
TheVisionary25
TheVisionary25 - 11/20/2025, 10:38 AM
@bkmeijer1 - maybe not

I guess you could just have had Sabine being mentored by Ahsoka in other ways but idk if the parallel to the latter’s relationship with Anakin would have worked then.

@TheVisionary25 - too bad they already gave the Darksaber away to Bo Katan, otherwise they could've used that reasoning

Must say....Sabine as a failed Jedi was a bit odd and unbelievable. Don't have much loyalty to Rebels so I couldn't really care less.
