OBI-WAN KENOBI Sizzle Reel Gives Us A First Look At Some Concept Art For The Disney+ Series

Ahead of tomorrow's Disney+ Day event, the streaming service has debuted a behind-the-scenes sizzle reel for Obi-Wan Kenobi which gives us, among other things, a first look at some official concept art from the Star Wars series.

There's no actual footage, but we are treated to interview snippets with director Deborah Chow and star Ewan McGregor, who expresses his excitement at being given the opportunity to reprise the role of the legendary Jedi master and cross lightsabers with Hayden Christensen's Darth Vader again.

Speaking of that long-awaited rematch, their clash is spotlighted in some artwork along with an Imperial ship, a mysterious location, and another look at the Dark Lord of the Sith.

Check out the video and concept art below, and be sure to drop back tomorrow for the (fingers crossed) trailer.

Specific plot details are under wraps, but we do know that Obi-Wan will be set between the events of Revenge Of The Sith and A New Hope. There are also rumors that younger versions of both Luke Skywalker and Leia Organa will appear, but that's yet to be confirmed.

McGregor and Christensen will be joined by Moses Ingram, Indira Varma, Joel Edgerton, Bonnie Piesse, Kumail Nanjiani, Rupert Friend, O’Shea Jackson Jr., Simone Kessell and Benny Safdie.

The Mandalorian director Deborah Chow is set to helm all episodes of the series, with Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy on board as producer along-with Chow, Jason D. McGatlin (The Rise of Skywalker), Tracey Seaward (The Queen), and John Swartz (Rogue One).

Still don't know what to think of this show. Could be good, could be pointless. Guess we'll see

@PicolasCage - Mandalorian hardly has a 'point' but it's still fantastic. Most content is 'pointless'

@Cap1 - I mean yeah for sure. Pointless was probably the wrong word to use, but I'm not sure what word I'm looking for here...

Like there's just kinda no hype there for me? Feels a lot like Solo to me. It COULD be good, as anything can be, but it just feels like a meh kind of concept as it is rn

@PicolasCage - Doesn't feel like Solo to me. Half of Solo's charm was his mysteriousness, hence the dislike toward a prequel revealing too much. Lots of people want to see more McGregor Obi Wan

@PicolasCage - "Like there's just kinda no hype there for me? Feels a lot like Solo to me."

I'm totally with you.

"Pointless was probably the wrong word to use, but I'm not sure what word I'm looking for here..."

Superfluous is how I'd describe it, conceptually.

For me, there's a difference between something superfluous and the "pointlessness" of something like The Mandalorian. With The Mandalorian, I would argue that the opportunity to tell a new story arc exploring a new character is "the point" even though it may lack a higher purpose.

However, in cases when you're going back to an existing character who has already been thoroughly explored, I do believe there's a greater need to justify the why. To have a point. To add something of real value that makes the thing both richer and more complete.

I worry that the series is being made for the wrong reasons. It's an easy sell. Without any real narrative hook, they've got droves of people salivating with anticipation. But when it's that easy to ensure you have an audience, at times the rush towards the commercial opportunity outpaces the need to carefully consider the narrative and craft something meaningful. That's how we ended up with the sequel trilogy. Why work harder when you know you'll have the viewership either way?

I fear that this series will be "more" without adding anything of value. Made a video expressing my feelings about it a while back

@Cap1 - Not saying you're wrong to want that, but what exactly do you want to see? What do you want to know about his story that we don't already know? What do you feel is missing from his arc?

@BIGBMH - thank you, this pretty much sums up everything I was trying to convey in a much better way. Superfluous is a great way to describe how I feel about this show.

There's nothing inherently bad about superfluous spinoffs, but I do tend to be a lot more skeptical of them

@BIGBMH - absolutely spot on, I think we're excited because the bar has been set low and the last good live action thing was revenge of the sith. kotor showed us that star wars doesnt have to revolve around the skywalker era.

BIGBMH - 11/11/2021, 4:11 PM
@PicolasCage - Same. There are so many cash-ins these days that when the "why" isn't clear, it's hard to have faith that there is really an inspired vision for the project.

cant wait for this fight to kill all the emotional weight of the scene where obiwan sees darth with his own eyes for the first time in ep4. have fun, we adults already got our obiwan book a dozen years ago. skipping this, along with all disney material. #trEUcanon

Hold up. If he actually fights Vader doesn’t that mess up continuity? In the Vader and Obi-Wan fight in Ep. 4 they state the last time they met was when he was still his student so they haven’t seen each other since 3.
Spidey91
Spidey91 - 11/11/2021, 1:35 PM
@Ha1frican - if you wanna get technical, he never finished jedi training so I guess he can still be considered his student. Think of it like that one dude in college that disappears one day and then comes back like 5 years later 😂
Ha1frican
Ha1frican - 11/11/2021, 1:35 PM
@Ha1frican - and if that’s not the case how did he possibly stay on Tatooine to protect Luke and then somehow still remain hidden? He either left Luke on Tattooine which negates the whole reason he was there or Vader would have known he was on Tattoine right by where his extended family was and would have been able to hunt him down

@Ha1frican - Could also mean he was still a student/learning to use the dark side, but now he has finally become a master in knowledge of it. Basically depends on when the show is set.

@Ha1frican - my new head cannon is Vader and Ben are just elderly men who can't accurately remember their history by the time ep 4 rolls around lol

@Alkazam - Maul is cool and all but his robo wang has been sucked plenty already the past +20 years, and specially in animation.
