While Tom Hardy's Venom films haven't exactly garnered a ton of praise from critics, the movies have been the lone Spider-Man Universe (SSU) spin-off films from Sony that have turned a profit at the box office.
The first Venom film was released in 2018 and earned $856.1M at the box office from a $100M production budget. A 2021 sequel, subtitled Let There Be Carnage didn't quite fare as well but still made a solid profit, earning $507M from a $110 production budget.
Sony would certainly kill for these kinds of box office returns after striking out with Morbius and Madame Web.
Recently, Variety caught up with one of the new additions in Venom 3, actress Juno Temple (Atonement, Ted Lasso) at last night's SAG Awards.
Details on who Temple is portraying are currently a mystery but the actress revealed that filming on the 'threequel' is close to wrapping up.
Said Temple, "We're coming close to an end at the moment. It's been a wild, wonderful ride. It's so new to me. It's a big set! This is crazy. It's been so much fun and I got to work with such cool people. I've been so lucky in my career to just have the most incredible casts. I can't wait for it to get out into the world. I think it's going to be a good one."
Venom star Tom Hardy has previously teased that the third film will likely be his final cinematic outing as Eddie Brock. He's joined in the third film by Temple, Chiwetel Ejiofor (12 Years A Slave, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness) and Clark Backo (Designated Survivor, The Changeling). Sony has managed to keep details on who they're playing under wraps.
Filming on the sequel began on June 26, 2023, but was quickly paused in July by the SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes. The production resumed in November and is now close to wrapping up, per Temple.
The bulk of filming took place in Los Mateos, Spain- where several set photos revealed that the location was being used as a stand-in for Mexico. A portion of the film was also shot in London.
Screenwriter Kelly Marcel, who worked on the script for the two previous Venom films, is directing the third entry. She also penned the film's script alongside Hardy.
Venom 3 is currently slated for release in North American theaters on November 8, 2024.
