VENOM Will Reportedly Feature Flashbacks To An Unexpected Time And Setting

There's an awful lot we don't know about Venom but it's now being widely reported that the upcoming Spider-Man spinoff could take us to an unexpected time and place. Hit the jump for what we know so far!

With production on Venom now officially underway, some fresh details about the spinoff are finally beginning to surface. Apparently, the plan is for at least some scenes to be set in Asia with a casting call going out for "villagers without modern haircuts." That could point to Vietnam flashbacks or even a feudal Japan setting as we potentially learn a lot more about the origin story of the alien symbiote.
Bear in mind that we have no idea whether or not Spider-Man actually exists in the world Venom calls home, so it's feasible that the symbiote has been on Earth for centuries or that it was created by the government and used in various combat situations (that would obviously take inspiration from both the Ultimate Universe and the time Flash Thompson spent wearing the suit for the US government).

We'll just have to wait and see but the signs may very well be pointing to Venom being far from a faithful adaptation of the source material. That will obviously be upsetting to some fans but was to be expected when Sony has decided to move forward with Spider-Man movies which have no connection to the wall-crawler appearing in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Here's hoping it all works, eh?

@MrPositive - I think that in a surprise move, Sony is going to have "Andrew Garfield"'s Spider-Man come back, but cast Joe Keery instead. That way it won't confuse audiences. And they'll earn back a TON of money through blu-ray and dvd sales of the first two films.

This will also open the door to the multiverse, allowing Marvel's Spider-Man to cross over with Sony's for Spider-verse.

-THAT OR-

Back when Amy Pascal said they were in the same universe, she wasn't talkng out of her ass, she was dead on. They just didn't want to reveal it yet, so they made it out like she didn't know what she was talking about, but really, these movies ARE in the MCU.

Think about it. Marvel only has a contract wth Sony for 3 films. BUT it would take more than one film to flesh out Venom or even Black Cat. So we introduce them in their own movies, done by Sony and then, if they're successful, we can connect the universes and say they were a part of it all along. If they fall flat, then plausible deniability allows those films not to tarnish what MArvel has done for Spidey.

Either way would work and make for interesting future films.

It should be in the future where Peter has been Spidey for years.

That would make the most sense.

I just don't see how these flashbacks would work without Spider-Man in them

@JohnnyTBP -

I'm in the same boat.

But with this new reveal, I'm starting to get some serious Manga-verse vibes.
The more I think about it, the Spider-Clan would actually be a great way of going about Venom without using Peter Parker.

Hmmmm...

@SKetCH - I recently read somewhere the supposibly Carnage is going to be the big bad in the movie. If that’s the case and they get someone good enough to play Cletus Cassidy. It could turnout good. Those two battling it out could be only way to help get over the fact that spidey ain’t showing up. Fingers crossed

@MarvelDCEqually -
I'm pretty positive that Carnage as the villain was 100% confirmed by SONY themselves around the announcement of the film's production beginning.

It'll definitely be a saving grace but I still think they'll take inspiration from the Manga-verse in order to incorporate "spiders" into his mythology without using PP/SM.

Man I'm not liking that freaking VENOM,one of Spider-Man's best villains, doesn't have any ties to Spider-Man. Smh seems like a waste he didn't pick it up in INFINITY War while in space...you know.. where Venom comes from.

So I guess they going to have the symbiote connect with another before Hardy in the Flashback as a substitute for Spiderman
