MORTAL KOMBAT 2 Logo Features A Nod To Johnny Cage As Production On The Upcoming Sequel Continues

Cameras are currently rolling on Mortal Kombat 2 in Australia, and a first look at the movie's logo has been revealed by Liu Kang actor Ludi Lin. The actor took to Instagram to share his excitement for the sequel, captioning the photo by saying, "And so it begins again..."

Something that's grabbed the attention of fans when it comes to this logo is the fact the green colour scheme appears to be a nod to Johnny Cage's unique energies. That's a power source passed down through his family which materializes when he uses his powers in combat.

That character is expected to be this follow-up's lead, with the expectation being that he'll serve as a mentor to Cole Young as they fight side-by-side to protect Earthrealm. The first instalment ended with Shang Tsung being banished by Raiden after he swore to train new fighters for the upcoming Mortal Kombat tournament, and we're sure Johnny will be among his new recruits.

The first movie received a tepid critical response but was a huge hit on HBO Max when it was released at the height of the pandemic. The franchise's producers have acknowledged the opening chapter's shortcomings, promising to learn from past mistakes with this sequel.

The movie stars Lewis Tan as Cole Young, Jessica McNamee as Sonya Blade, Josh Lawson as Kano, Mehcad Brooks as Jackson "Jax" Briggs, Tadanobu Asano as Raiden, Ludi Lin as Liu Kang, Chin Han as Shang Tsung, Joe Taslim as Noob Saibot, Hiroyuki Sanada as Scorpion, Martyn Ford as Shao Kahn, Desmond Chiam as King Jerrod, Ana Thu Nguyen as Queen Sindel, and Damon Herriman as Quan Chi.

New cast additions include Karl Urban as Johnny Cage, Tati Gabrielle as Jade, and Adeline Rudolph as Kitana.

Moon Knight Head Writer Jeremy Slater has penned the screenplay, while Simon McQuoid is back in the director's chair. According to a brief logline, "The sequel continues the story of a group of ragtag  fighters, versed in the ways of martial arts, who  defend our reality which is known in Earthrealm against the Outworld."

Mortal Kombat 2 doesn't currently have a confirmed release date.

“green colour scheme appears to be a nod to Johnny Cage's unique energies.”

What a reach. Lol

@JobinJ - Right? It looks more like a nod to Liu Kang if anything. That dragon looks like the dragon Liu Kang summons in one of his fatalities.

But even that is a reach because in some games, the dragon is made of fire, in others its an actual dragon, and in others its his animality and he turns into the dragon.

It honestly just looks like a different take on the Mortal Kombat dragon, really.

@CorndogBurglar - Also featured in his "Fatal Blow" too.

I once got a Fatal Blow! She's still suckin me.......dry of my money! Trust me, it hurts worse than what's depicted in the games!

@JobinJ - yeah, can't have anything to do with the character literally named after a famously green mineral or anything.

I've been playing Mortal Kombat since the original arcade released. Before the console versions even came out. And nothing about this logo makes me think of Johnny Cage.

@TheHumanSpider2 - Honestly was hoping Scorpion would take control of his body and we would never have to see him for a while

They need to go full R rated mode, full gore, fatalities. Translate the essence of the games into the movies and add a solid enough script and you've got yourself a winner.

@Typhoon20 - They did that with the first one. It was rated R and had fatalities straight out of the games. They were brutal. Especially Kung Lao.

But the story was weak and it had a lot of questionable stuff in it.

@Typhoon20 - They did that for the first movie...and that is not the essence of MK, at least not outside the games, gore for the sake of gore is lame.

Are they scrapping those stupid tattoos from the first movie? That concept really ruined it for me.

First movie was bad but I still kinda enjoyed it tbh. Hope this one is better, I like Urban as Cage, not the obvious choice but I think he’ll kill it as long as he’s gotta half-decent script.
