MORTAL KOMBAT Finds Its Sonya Blade And Kano; Lewis Tan Joins Cast In Undisclosed Role

The upcoming Mortal Kombat reboot has found its Sonya Blade and Kano in the form of Aussie actors Jessica McNamee and Josh Lawson. Lewis Tan has also signed on, but we don't know who he'll be playing...

New Line's Mortal Kombat reboot has added three more fighters to its ranks.

Joining previously announced cast members Joe Taslim (Sub Zero), Mehcad Brooks (Jax) and Ludi Lin (Liu Lang) will be Jessica McNamee (The Meg) as Sonya Blade and Josh Lawson (House of Lies) as her long-time nemesis, Kano.

THR also reports that Lewis Tan (Iron Fist, Deadpool 2) is in final negotiations for an undisclosed role. Could he be Scorpion, perhaps?

Plot details on the new movie remain a mystery for now, but it's assumed that it'll follow the basic premise of the original video game: a group of warriors assemble to compete in a tournament to protect the Earth from the demonic forces of Outworld.

Mortal Kombat is set to commence production in South Australia later this year, and will slice its way into theaters on March 5, 2021.

@CorndogBurglar - 99.9% chance they will, only decent video game movie is the original Mortal Kombat film after all.

@dracula - detective pikachu is great and the only one when it comes to video game movies.

The first MK movie is barely decent. Fight coreography was too slow and sloppy. Acting was cringy, especially on Lambert's part.

I mean, a serious, violent, brutal, and gory Mortal Kombat could be so amazing.

The original was pretty great when it came out and I still watch it now as a guilty pleasure every now and then.

But taken seriously, this franchise could be incredible.

Oh....and no shaky cam in the fight scenes. The best thing the original did was keep the camera steady and pulled back enough to be able to see what the fighters were doing the whole time.

For those unaware, this movie is nothing to be excited about. It's guaranteed to flop at this point:

• The director and screenwriter both are entirely inexperienced. This is literally their first movie ever.

• NOTE: When it comes to big studio productions of major franchises, this simply doesn't happen unless the studio has zero faith in the property. No one gets their start directing Batman. And given that it's a Hollywood video game movie...

• All of the producers attached to this have shitty track records except James Wan.

• One of the producers (E. Bennet Walsh) has a bad track record with cheesy blockbusters like The Amazing Spider-Man 2Ghost Rider, and After Earth.

• Another producer (Todd Garner) has mostly done shitty comedies like Jack & JillThe Master of DisguiseAre We There Yet? and Zookeeper.

• Producer Sean Robins hasn't done anything notable except Tag (which received mediocre reviews).

• Producer Larry Kasinoff was involved with the awful MK films from the 1990s. It's also the same studio.

• This film has been repeatedly delayed and in development hell.

• Leaked drafts from an earlier draft of the script (by the exact same writer) were horrible. The main protagonists weren't even from the games, some random white guy became Scorpion, and Raiden was a teenage boy. Although it has been rewritten (by the exact same guy), he confirmed on Twitter that the leaks were definitely real.

• The studio has previously called this film their version of The Avengers, and a few weeks ago the writer Greg Russo stated that the movie is going to be a tongue-in-cheek comedy inspired by Deadpool. That's not Mortal Kombat...

@dragon316 -
Lol, what? People spent YEARS demanding a Deadpool movie and they were hyped the moment the test footage dropped. It was also made by a skilled cast and crew, and the writer and the director weren't literal amateurs.

No one attached to this film is remotely competent except James Wan. This movie literally has a direct-to-video quality crew attached to it, and there is going to be a lot of disappointment when the trailers start dropping...

@Darkknight2149 - lmao, WB really gave [frick]ing Barbie one of the best writers in Hollywood (Noah Baumbach) and an Oscar nominated director, but Mortal Kombat gets a direct-to-DVD level crew. WB gotta WB....

@CorndogBurglar - Im hoping for some really great choreography that doesnt cut every millisecond during the fight. Been watching a lot of old kung fu movies and its crazy how we havent consistently kept that quality of kung fu in movies.

@TheDoctor1225 - Not Oscar winners but better than lewis [frick]ing tan. I thought Ludi Lin was a great choice for Liu Kang.

As mortal kombat fan I will see this I pass judgement on movies after I see them not as little kid that need mommy and daddy reviews from critics tell them what to do in life full grown adults with family’s and jobs acting like that in real world is pitiful and sad they should live with there parents if that is how they will act to movies and tv shows let critics and reviews from strangers tell them what is good and bad not using there own brain and judgment think for them self in life

The people behind this SUCK.

They should've gotten Gareth Evans for this and offered him SO MUCH MONEY that he would never say no.

I'm only watching this for Ludi Lin as Liu Kang and Joe Taslim as Sub-Zero.

Everything else ranges from "meh" to "no thank you".

This is the kind of movie I expect Lewis Tan to do so I'm not surprised.

There’s some kind of irony in the Kano casting; an Aussie actor playing him, when in the first movie he was played by an American actor who fraudulently pretended to be Australian for years so he would get more roles. I never understand how anyone actually thought he was Australian, his accent was TERRIBLE. “ ‘allo baby, did you miss me?” 🙄
