New Look At Gore Verbinski's Unproduced BIOSHOCK Movie

In 2008, Gore Verbinski ("The Lone Ranger") was hired by Universal Pictures to direct a live-action film based on the popular BioShock video game series. The screenplay was written by Penny Dreadful creator John Logan ("Skyfall"). Verbinski's wanted to make the film R-rated and with a budget of $200 million. That's an unheard of budget for an R-rated film, and Universal voiced their concern over it when a year later Zack Snyder's Watchmen, which was another R-rated film, struggled at the box office. When Universal requested Gore slash the budget to $80 million he decide to pass as the film's director and only stayed on as a producer. Juan Carlos Fresnadillo ("28 Weeks Later") was then hired to direct, but in 2010 BioShock creator Ken Levine stepped in and pulled the plug for good. Levine didn't think Juan Carlos Fresnadillo was a good match for BioShock.

Conceptual illustrator Kasra Farahani ("Thor") worked on the project, designing various sets. Check out his designs below of the power station set, which include key sequences with Little Sister and Big Daddy.

In the first half of the 20th century an industrialist by the name of Andrew Ryan, built an underwater utopia called Rapture. Rapture was populated by the world's best and the brightest and was seen as an unbridled success. A undetermined period of time later a new species of sea slug that secreted stem cells was discovered in the ocean surrounding Rapture. This allowed the inhabitants of Rapture to enhance physical and mental capabilities and to heal old wounds. These stem cells, known as Adam, became so sought after that a war to control the substance broke out between Andrew Ryan and one of Adam's original discoverers, a scientist named Fontaine. The war was eventually won by Ryan, however the population, having modified themselves to survive the war, was changed forever. They were now addicted to Adam and depended on it for their survival. The game starts as the player's aeroplane crash lands in the ocean near Rapture ten years after society collapsed. - bioshock-online.com

I LOVE the games. They're amazing

but they should stay the way they are -- as games. I don't ever want to see a Bioshock movie.
Even if it is directed by Gore Verbinski

Never played any of the bioshock games. Would've been cool to see this on the big screen.

There are people on here that truly believed this movie could be done at a PG-13. I don't think so. So it's best the movie doesn't get made.

Gore Verbinski really knows how to make live-action cartoons. Say what you will about the Pirates sequels (The first one is still a great time) and Lone Ranger, but he really knows how to make some great setpieces (the wheel setpiece in Dead Man's Chest so much fun).

Somebody watched this and said no to a movie, yet in the same univers, some other guy, (I guess the same guy) watched Tetris and thought: Hey, this would be perfect for a movie!
And we wonder why the Aliens never make contact...

It will probably roll back around as a film project eventually. Too good of a story to let it sit.

I'm a big fan of the original BioShock and (whisper it) also BioShock 2. While not as good as the original, I thought it was still an awesome game. I haven't had the chance to play Infinite yet, so can't comment on that.

On the film side of things, I would only want a BioShock adaptation if it had an absolutely well-thought out, solid story and strong characters portrayed well (as well as great production values/special effects).

Anything less and I would never want to see it made.

The unproduced Bioshock film, by Sander Cohen.

I want the film to be made, but I can', I complain but when I do it's never heard

It's my curse, my eternal curse, I want the film to be made but it won't! It's my curse my [frick]ing curse, I want the film to be made, PLEASE, make the film!PLEASE!

LOL Sander Cohen was the most deranged and psychotic villain of any video game ever that I've fought, was so satisfying I killed him when I did.

It really is quite surprising how some movies are made for a modest budget and are great (Solomon Kane) and others just get ridiculously out of hand.

I think what may have happened was those putting up the cash were interfering too much )as producers do, remember the Snow Piercer debacle), and Kevin Levine told them to shove it.
