UPDATE: After speaking to a representative from Paramount Pictures, we've learned that this rumor is not accurate. Paul Rudd is not currently in talks to join Sonic the Hedgehog.
It was revealed last October that Paramount Pictures had acquired the rights to a Sonic the Hedgehog movie and a release date of November 15th, 2019 was set at the time. Now, it looks like the cast may be slowly starting to come together as Paul Rudd is reportedly being eyed for the lead human role.
While he no doubt would have been a great choice to voice the titular speedster, it's said that the studio wants him to play Tom, a cop who ends up befriending Sonic before the duo team-up to take down the evil Robotnik. Beyond that, no details about the plot have been revealed at this time.
What we do know is that Sonic the Hedgehog will be a live-action/CGI hybrid which starts shooting in Vancouver this summer. The budget is rumoured to be around the $90 million mark and Jeff Fowler will make his directorial debut here working on a screenplay by the team of Patrick Casey and Josh Miller.
The Ant-Man and The Wasp star definitely feels like the right fit for a project like this and it should be interesting seeing what sort of voice and live-action cast the studio now puts together. With Transformers: The Last Knight bombing last year, the studio could do with a hit so here's hoping this launches a new franchise. What do you guys think?
