Despite mostly negative reviews, Morbius performed better than expected (to some extent, anyway) when it arrived in theaters with a $39.1 million opening weekend. However, thanks to poor word of mouth, you won't be surprised to learn that Sony's Marvel movie is looking at a decline of 55% - 60% this weekend, though Variety (via GameFagger.com) believes it could drop by as much as 65% to 70%!
Either way, $15 million is on the higher end of what Morbius is looking to collect, making it easy prey for a certain blue hedgehog. Preview screenings for Sonic the Hedgehog 2 began yesterday evening, and early estimates point to a $55 million opening. It could go even higher, and Paramount Pictures has to be pleased with these numbers seeing as the first movie debuted to $58 million in 2020.
Internationally, the Sonic the Hedgehog sequel has already grossed a solid $29.8 million.
Michael Bay's Ambulance isn't expected to do particularly well with $10 million, meaning it will likely be topped by Morbius for a debut at #3. There was a time when the filmmaker was a huge draw, but that no longer appears to be the case, and this is definitely a disappointing estimate for a movie that stars Jake Gyllenhaal (Spider-Man: Far From Home) and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II (Aquaman).
"Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is a truly great video game movie and a sequel that delivers on all fronts," we said in our recent review of the sequel, "action-packed, hilarious, and full of fun references, this fan-pleasing adventure is a game we'll happily play again."
