E3 is typically filled with all sorts of fun surprises, but nothing at Microsoft's Xbox conference was as unexpected as a guest appearance from Hollywood action star Keanu Reeves.

The John Wick star took the stage during CD Projekt Red's presentation of Cyberpunk 2077, their highly anticipated open-world, action-adventure RPG. And for good reason too — it was revealed that Reeves will be playing a "key character" in the game.

Reeves popped up at the end of a gritty and intense trailer, and it was later revealed that he will be playing a character named Johnny Silverhand. In addition to his appearance and voice, Reeves also provided full-body motion capture for the character.

Following his surprise reveal in the trailer, Reeves actually showed up on the E3 stage and talked a little about Cyberpunk 2077 and what drew him to the project. No stranger to sci-fi storie (having appeared in The Matrix series and Johnny Mnemonic) , Reeves was fascinated with the concept of a branching storyline and character customization.

He also revealed the release date for the highly anticipated game.

In the most dangerous megacity of the future, the real you is not enough. Become V, a cyber-enhanced mercenary outlaw going after a one-of-a-kind implant — the key to immortality. Customize your cyberware and skillset, and explore a vast city of the future obsessed with power, glamour and body modification. The choices you make will determine the story and shape the world around you.

Cyberpunk 2077 will arrive on April 16, 2020 for Xbox One, PS4, and PC. Keanu Reeves also has a cameo appearance as Duke Caboom in Pixar's Toy Story 4.

Microsoft's E3 press conference was easily one of the worst they've had in years. Last year on the other hand was great. There was a lot of rumors on ResetEra that Microsoft was going to announce three new game studios and all they did was show one. Even the rumors that a new Banjo Kazooie, Perfect Dark and Fable 4 turned out to be false.

I guess I shouldn't get hyped, but when many game company insiders hinted to those games being shown and Microsoft buying lots of big name game studios and then you watched the E3 press conference you can't help but feel like you wasted your time watching it.

This E3 conference was all CGI trailers and even Gears of War 5 which comes out in September didn't have gameplay shown. That was a huge mistake. I understand why so little was shown for Halo Infinite, but even last year's CGI trailer was better than this one.

Keanu Reeves making an appearance and Double Fine becoming a first part studio were the only highlight of the show.

I just hope next year Microsoft brings their A game, because with Sony going to be there and they'll be showing the PS5 and it is rumored Naughty Dog has been working on a space exploration game, Microsoft needs to show new games to get people to go out to buy the next Xbox system.

I cannot wait for this game. It looks freaking AMAZING! And it now has Keanu Reeves in it!

The conference itself was underwhelming. I thought MS was bringing their big guns with tons of gameplay, big exclusives and stuff. Instead it was tons of CGI trailers, even Gears 5 only showed 3 different CGI trailers and that releases in 3 months. Some gameplay from indies was fun, including the now not-indie Double Fine. But it was mostly short and it's just not the type of stuff to build a conference with, they needed the big stuff to show gameplay and hook people.

"It's going to be breathtaking.."
"You're breathtaking!"

Positive heckling is perhaps the best part of E3.

"We know you came here for one thing.."
"Todd Howard!"

Attach Keanu Reeves to any project and it increases its sales potential and cool factor by 1,000,000%

That's a genuinely researched statistic by the way.

@bcom - If the rumors are true you're about to be very interested in the Eternals. Lol

@LongMayHeReign - Early box office predictions for The Eternals was sitting at around the $700 - $800 million mark. When rumors of Keanu joining the project surfaced the predictions jumped to around $764,988,547,284,899,432,110,876.

Again, that's a genuine researched statistic.
