Gear up for an old fashioned box office showdown in December 2024, as Paramount has dated the highly-anticipated Sonic the Hedgehog 3 on the same day as Disney is expected to launch Avatar 3!

2022 got off to a roaring start for Paramount Pictures when they launched Sonic the Hedgehog 2, which swiftly became one of the year's biggest success stories, ultimately grossing over $402.2 million at the worldwide box office.

With the blockbuster film now available on 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray, the studio has officially dated its hotly-awaited sequel, Sonic the Hedgehog 3, for a December 20, 2024 release.

Further details remain under wraps, but the film will formally introduce Shadow the Hedgehog to the live-action franchise and is expected to adapt story elements from the Sonic Adventure 2 and Shadow the Hedgehog video games, meaning more familiar charaters may also show up.

Jeff Fowler will be back in the director's chair, with Ben Schwartz (Sonic the Hedgehog), Colleen O'Shaughnessey (Miles "Tails" Prower), Idris Elba (Knuckles the Echidna), James Marsden (Tom Wachowski), and Tika Sumpter (Maddie Wachowski) all expected to reprise their roles from the previous installments.

Jim Carrey announced his retirement from acting earlier this year, so it's uncertain whether he'll return as Dr. Robotnik, but either way, it's been confirmed that the role will not be recast under any circumstance, which is welcome news.

No word on who will voice Shadow, but John Wick star Keanu Reeves has emerged as an early fan-favorite casting choice.

Luckily, fans won't have to wait until 2024 to return to the Sonic movie universe as a Knuckles series is also currently being developed for Paramount+ and is expected to launch in 2023, presumably bridging the gap between the two theatrical films.

Sonic all the way.

Avatar is 10 years too late and the original is extremely overrated.

@TheHumanSpider2 - It's something of a guilty pleasure for me now. Having a kid that loves Sonic doesn't help. I even like this guy...

@The1st - I liked them, they are good movies, even having some jokes for the adults, but they are clearly aimed at kids (as they should), the Genesis references and the homoerotic undertone between Eggman and Stone is a bonus.

I’m not a major fan of Avatar, enjoyed the experience, sure. But I can promise everyone on this site, screenshot this comment if you wish and haunt me with it if I’m wrong - but Avatar 2 will be just as successful as the first one.

This actually won’t be a bad move. Unless there is a big animated film slotted for this time, Sonic will serve as the family-friendly alternative for the holiday season.

People can hate on Avatar all they want, it won't stop the sequals from making droves of money; especially with that super lucrative Christmas - New Year timeframe.

As much as I hate to admit it, the sequels will probably become some of the top grossing films in history.

Hoping we get Amy Rose and Rouge the Bat in this film. They're both integral to Shadow's character, the story of SA2 and Amy's the last of the core four heroes to be introduced like c'mon, she HAS to be here.

I'm hoping that Rouge gets introduced in the Knuckles show before Sonic 3 though (hopefully with the Chaotix), as it would mean she can be in Sonic 3 without needing to be properly introduced like Shadow and Amy would.

I'd trim it down, Shadow feels all humans are like G.U.N who are hunting him so he's reluctant to help. Sonic convinces him that humans are not all like G.U.N convincing Shadow to go Super Shadow with Sonic at the end to destroy the space station lab that's set to crash into Earth.

Then in a spin-off movie/series you can have Shadow and he's trying to develop connections, learn to trust humans, and he winds up allying with Rouge and Omega. Omega's programming turns him evil during the final battle and Shadow ends up managing to convince him to turn good thanks to his experience with humanity and Rouge.

Movie 4 would have Metal Sonic and introduce Amy Rose, the core idea being the concept of love/obsession. Metal Sonic is obsessed with Sonic, Sonic has a crush on Amy so he tries to change himself and show off.

I forced myself to finish the first movie. It’s not a good Sonic movie. I hear part is a lot better and closer to the Sonic feel.

Whatever Avatar 2 makes depends on how much Sonic 3 is destroyed.

I've only watched the 1st one and I liked it alot, missed the 2nd one so I have enough time on my heads to catch up.

Think I'll prefer Sonic 3 over Avatar 3 too.
