Joss Whedon Reflects On WONDER WOMAN After AVENGERS Success; Gina Carano Still Interested
We've heard from Joss Whedon many times about how Warner Bros. made the foolish decision to turn down his Wonder Woman pitch, but he talks here about whether the success of The Avengers has left him bitter. Gina Carano also reiterates her interest in playing the character on the big screen.
In an interview with Total Film, Joss Whedon was asked to comment on whether the massive success of Marvel's The Avengers has left him feeling bitter about past projects. After all, there must have been a lot of studio execs kicking themselves for turning the writer/director down after the superhero ensemble went on to gross over $1.5 billion worldwide! The magazine specifically asked him about his failed Wonder Woman pitch for Warner Bros. Here's what he had to say:
"You know, part of the process of dealing with the success of The Avengers has been discovering a vein of anger that I didn't even know existed in me. You do begin to think about when they let you do it, and you get it right, and then you think back to all of the times they didn't let you do it. But I am my own worst enemy. I'm not really good at selling myself or standing up for myself and I have a pathological fear of confrontation, which is not really useful in this industry. There are plenty of times when I could have controlled my own career more than I did. All of these frustrations, and all of these setbacks, definitely surfaced again after The Avengers. So, yeah, you know what? Now I'm really pissed [laughs]. It used to just be my life and my living, and that was fine, but now I feel a bit... See? You see? But I know you can't live your life like that. You have to stay positive."
"Absolutely," Gina Carano enthusiastically replied in a separate interview with the magazine when they asked her whether she's still interested in bringing Wonder Woman to life on the big screen. "Actually, I think that would be fascinating if done correctly, if they did it more in a way where they're humanizing her. She comes from an all-female planet - something the world hasn't seen. I just think there's so much story there." It's clear that the Fast and Furious 6 actress has a good idea as to what is needed to make a live adaptation work, but with the CW planning a TV series based on the adventures of the Amazonian princess, it's unclear when or if we ever really will see her up on the big screen...
