BOX OFFICE: X-MEN APOCALYPSE Looks Set For Impressive $80 Million Haul Over Memorial Day Weekend

Ticket sales slowed down a little on Friday evening, but X-Men: Apocalypse still looks set to have a solid opening weekend in North America with a haul of $80 million. Hit the jump for further details...

With Disney embroiled in a public relations nightmare thanks to Amber Heard filing for a restraining order against her husband Johnny Depp amid allegations of domestic abuse, Alice Through the Looking Glass ended up being no match for X-Men: Apocalypse at the North American box office yesterday. The Bryan Singer helmed release made $26.4 million on Friday for an estimated haul of $80 million over the long Memorial Day weekend, a little behind initial estimations of around $90 million or more.

Alice Through the Looking Glass made only $9.8 million yesterday, but The Hollywood Reporter reveals that traffic on the latest X-Men movie still slowed down a little as the evening wore on, hence why those estimates have dropped a little. Fox meanwhile are said to be well aware that this instalment is unlikely to top 2014's Days of Future Past due to the critical reception, but still hoped for $85 million. It's still early days of course, so there's every chance X-Men: Apocalypse could exceed expectations.

We've yet to hear about how the movie is currently doing overseas, but it was revealed earlier this week that it's already earned upwards of $130 million. Despite the fact that X-Men: Apocalypse is unlikely to top the previous instalment, it will still be a success for Fox, and is performing well when you take into account that this is the sixth instalment in a franchise which has been very hit and miss!

Won't make as much as DoFP but it also wasn't as good as DoFP. I don't get why it has that low of a rating on RT but I [frick]ing loved the film. Either way I'm happy it definitely won't flop and Disney's cheap attempt at trying to slow them down will be the one flopping.

@CaptainAmerica - Critics are getting tired of superhero films about "heroes fight against one-note villain that tries to destroy the world".

I gotta admit, when I went, the theater wasn't crowded or overflowing with audience members.

@ComicsBornAndBred - Did you enjoy it? Isn't that all that matters end of day? I went to theatres that were packed for shitty movies I wish I could get my time back from; and money lol!

@ComicsBornAndBred - Ah I see; well I don't know how busy your theatre normally is, I just hope mine isn't too busy when I go see it. I screwed myself with CW by going last minute only to find all sold out!

This movie felt like a 4 episode arch of the animated series. It's defitely more shallow than the typical X-Men movie but the characters mostly all fit who thry are based on, Apocalypse is as powerful as he should be and there are some really good action sequences in it. This really felt like it was made for fans of the series.

@Ryguy88 - Shallow, really? I thought I understood everyone's motivation rather well and thought that the film never dwelled on a single character. It could be that I am not versed in X-Men lore. I didn't watch the 90's cartoon nor read any of the comics. However, I did get to see them whenever they made appearances in the Spiderman and his Amazing Friends cartoon. Everyone had a areas on for being, and no one was there just because. I thought maybe Psylocke didn't have a motivation, especially since she didn't speak. But she didn't have to. I concluded that her satisfaction comes from a lust for power and a need to test her mettle against other high powered mutants. Again, I don't have vast knowledge about canon, yet left satisfied and anticipate the next movie in the series.
