Does " X-Men" + James Cameron = SUCCESS?

James Cameron has been attached to Fox studios for future projects.
Fox owns the 'X-Men' properties at the moment.
What if Fox offered Cameron an 'X-Men' project, or even a 'Fantastic Four' re-boot? Would he be up to the task, or miserably fail?

We all regretfully know that Fox Studios owns , for now , the 'X-Men ' and 'Fantastic Four' properties. Although the last 'X-Men' movie was a surprise hit, it doesn't have to end there.

James Cameron is now relatively cosy with Fox - having a business arrangement for future projects- which means it is feasible for Fox to offer him the opportunity to take the helm on future MARVEL character based films.
But would he know how to handle the CBM genre?
As of this date, James Cameron has the distinction of having the two top international box office grosser's in 'Avatar'( #1) and 'Titanic'(#2).
If you include 'Terminator' ,'Rambo:First Blood' ,'Aliens' ,'Terminator II:Judgement Day' as well as 'Dark Angel'(TV series) he has amassed quite a resume for himself.

Clearly , the elements of sci-fi and action/adventure are subject matters with which he is very familiar- and successful- in producing.
So it's not beyond the realm of possibility he could handle the expectations fans and the general public have of CBM's.
Although most of his past successes are original concepts, comic books have been around before the man was even born. And being that the subject matter is so well established in popular culture internationally-!, he'd have to tread a fine line, being respectful of source material, and fans(us!) while bringing his own brand of style and success to the project. Not an easy task.
However , I think I'm willing to give him the chance(if it were up to me) to do his best and see what he comes up with!
He obviously has an incredible imagination, which could translate into a CBM that truly captures the LIMITLESS possibilities in comics themselves.
I don't know..what do you think?

I remember a while back in the late 80's early 90's Cameron was supposed to direct a live action X-Men movie. However, apparently the cost and technology wasn't there so they scrapped it. I am pretty sure a script was written, and he was quite heavy into pre production.

After what he went through for years with Spider-Man, I don't think James Cameron has any interest in directing a Superhero movie. I expect him to direct a Terminator sequel before he would make a Marvel or DC film. After Avatar 2 and 3, I totally expect him to go back directing documentaries that he funds himself.

Actually Cameron was attached to both Spidey and X-Men, his take on Spidey was definitely more mature and darker, haven't read his treatment for the x-men so can't comment on how that was. Honestly I like many others would love to see it all back under Marvel but I have no Idea how they would integrate the whole [frick]ing mutant community in to the current universe. Long as they can make good movies like First Class and X2 then honestly I don't mind much.

@Spiderman2o29- Fair enough, but the editorial is in part to highlight his collaborative relationship with Fox giving him access to the 'X-Men' and 'FF'.

Personally, no. As much as he's a careful yet over-zealous crafter of his movies (sometimes), his treatment of Spider-Man was downright offsetting for me. Though I'd like to see him helm something a bit along the lines of maybe a War Machine spin-off? Guns and robots are his thing, and it wouldn't necessarily have to be something amazing, but something for fanboys. Though with his name attached to it, you never know...

I think he'd be more suited to helm a 'Fantastic Four' re-boot- the property has all the elements he favors in his blockbusters: Romance, action/adventure, sci-fi, and a potential for some serious violence-

I agree with Intruder here. People hate on James Cameron because he is very egotistical, but the bottom line is he makes quality movies that make a ton of money. Honestly in the past 20 years I have yet to see a bad James Cameron movie.

Also, every single movie he does starts off with terrible buzz like Titanic and Avatar. People say there is no way any of his movies will be good, then all of a sudden he is breaking box office records and being nominate for Academy Awards.

Despite how you feel about the man, you have to admit he produces a quality product. I would love to see him tackle a comic book movie.

film.The man's ripped off every original movie he's done.
Terminator was a ripoff of a Harlan Ellison book.
Rambo: First Blood Part II was a ripoff of Missing in Action.
Avatar was a ripoff of Dances with Wolfs and FernGully.
The rest where sequels to other peoples movies not
original.

@Intruder- You're right. Nothing is virgin. Every film maker , for the most part, borrows ideas from other sources. If the borrowing is subtle enough , you can call it 'inspiration' more than a 'rip-off'.

@Spiderman2o29- If you want to seem intelligent when you make a point, make sure common sense is your foundation.
Cameron made that statement in 2009(can't you see the date line?). That's two years ago bud. He can change his mind tomorrow. The vicissitude of corporate Hollywood is renown.
You seem to disagree with the merits of the editorial simply to offer a counter-point , but with no veracity.
Try again. You'll do better!

was,but the man cuts down others for the same infractions he
does himself.
In yes Terminator was a ripoff.Cameron said it himself
which got him sued by Harlan Ellison.Cameron lost.

I've boycotted Avatar in any movie he'll do in the future
including a Green Lantern movie for your crack up top.

based on his resume, CBMs that James Cameron should do are:

- something aquatic [Aquaman or The Sub-Mariner]

- something with a STRONG female lead [Wonder Woman, Ms. Marvel, or Witchblade]

- something futuristic or that has robots/cyborgs in it [Cyborg, Steel, Iron Man, or Cable]

- a teenage super hero team with strong female characters [Gen13]

- something militaristic [Sgt. Rock, Captain America, The Howling Commandos, or G.I. Joe]

oh regarding m1312020's find...

I KNEW IT!! I knew Avatar was a ripoff...!!! well, first of all story wise, it's BEYOND obvious stealing from all bunch of stuff, like Dances With Wolves and that 90's rain forest toon flick...

but, to steal SO CLOSE from this comic book..??!! oh my Lord! is this find for real..??!! the guys who did the comics, or marvel/disney shoulda SUED his ass.

Aliens is one of my ALL TIME favorite movie (of ANY kind), and his two Terminator flicks are some of my top faves too, but, other than those, Cameron's movies have been overrated, especially Titanic and Avatar.

the guy's SUPER SMART. no doubt about dat..but, i think he needs to collaborate with someone else to come up with original materials from now on.

Cameron's so overrated. Avatar was a completely overrated film, more of a pop-corn flick than a great film IMO, and waaaay too long for what was in it. Stunning visuals, but the movie itself wasn't worthy of all the hype it generated. Really couldn't get into Terminator and had to turn it off halfway through. Titanic was OK, but again nothing spectacular. Never seen Aliens.

The only positive we'd get from a James Cameron X-Men film is the likelihood of Sentinels playing a part. Little character development, a bunch of cliches, and some pretty poor dialogue and drama.

He has great ideas, and is so close to portraying them wonderfully, but he always seems to fall short IMO, whether it's crappy dialogue or poor story. Just an opinion.

Having said that, I'd happily watch his version of Green Lantern if he made one over the shit Martin Campbell managed to produce. Although I do think most of those problems were studio involvement, Cameron would have so much more free reign.
