Famke Janssen On X-MEN Movies; Reveals Details Of Her Appearance In THE WOLVERINE

A brief glimpse of Janssen as Jean Grey in the first teaser for James Mangold's The Wolverine finally confirmed the character's appearance in the movie (obviously) after a lot of speculation, but how big a role will she play? The actress reveals all to What Culture..

What Culture caught up with Famke Janssen to discuss her directorial debut Bringing Up Bobby, but of course talk also turned to her involvement with the X-Men movie franchise -- 3 films of which she has played mutant telepath Jean Grey in. The actress was asked about a possible appearance in Bryan Singer's upcoming X-Men: Days Of Future Past but remained tight lipped, instead revealing her admiration for the films and the cast they attract.

“I think that the X-Men series is a really successful one in constantly finding new and additional characters, or younger versions of the same characters to explore. Of course the X-Men as a comic book has so many characters that filmmakers can explore. I like what they’re doing. I think that they’ve always chosen really fine actors. With X-Men: First Class you had Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence and James McAvoy so it’s amazing the kind of actors they keep getting for these. It’s a classy series so I’m proud to be a part of it”.

Younger versions of characters? Could she be talking about a young Jean Grey? Anyway, she is a bit more revealing when it comes to her upcoming appearance in The Wolverine, confirming that it will indeed just be a flashback she pops up in. “I couldn't tell you [how much I’m in it]. It’s a flashback sequence, but that’s all I can say. You’ll just have to wait until July!”

I used to think she was so hot, but for some odd reason seeing her in Nip Tuck killed all that for me. I just cant look at her the same way.

She looks WAY older than the rest of the cast from the first X-Men movie, in fact...she already looked older in X3...I loved her in Goldeneye.

Too old for Jean Grey. Just recast this entire cast, start over from scratch without Singer. How do you ruin the Xmen franchise?

It's time to just forget X123, FC, Origins, Wolverine and DoFP. Just reboot and work straight from the comics. No Wolverine. Just cast Cyclops, Jean Grey, Beast, Iceman and Angel. Start this sucker up right.

This, please! I'd love it if DOFP was like, a really nice conclusion to the whole thing, being that it features pretty much everyone!

Too old to play Jean- it already looked like a cougar type deal when she was paired with James Marsden. Her best performances have been as a transvestite/transsexual. RECAST JEAN GREY. Jane Levy please.

I mean really, she was cast in Xmen when she was 35, she is 48 now. This is why it's so important that casting directors know comic book movies and be aware of the potential of comic book movies. This woman is almost 50 and will be showing up as Jean Grey.

If you have a franchise with the potential to keep running movies for 13 years, then you need to get young actors in their 20s unless the character calls for an older character. Most of the Xmen are young characters and they went out and got old people to play the roles. So like PsyBoy states, hopefully DOFP concludes Singer's run of the Xmen and gives us a younger group of Xmen.

I first saw X-Men in Amsterdam at the Dutch premiere - and got to not-really-meet her (I stood nearby as she was getting her photo taken). She's utterly stunning in the flesh.

Classy lady.

I don't like she refers to her scene in wolverine as a flashback, since it looks like she and wolvie are getting a little intimate. She and wolverine didn't hook up in the original trilogy. If it's actually just a dream that wolverine is having then I'm not worried, if it's a flashback then they're continuing to screw up their already butchered continuity.

@FIRG:
Based on that type of thinking you wouldn't mind if Dame Judy Dench played Jean Grey?

How about Denzel Washington to play Superman in MoS?

Casting calls make mention of certain qualities, features, age and height. Stop being naive. I'm sure you wouldn't mind if Kitty Pryde was played by Rebel Wilson and Cyclops was played by Nick Nolte. Stop being so PC.

@FreakingIdiot

Get it trough your head, there are plenty of young, 20 something, actors who can act rings around the Xmen cast and would actually look the part. The casting of the X movies shows that Singer has no clue about the material he's dealing with. But you're too dumb to realize that you fanatic. Keep watching Wolverine and Friends while fapping over Famke Jannsen posters in your mom's basement you dolt.

Pretty sure no one thought this franchise would still have Legs back in 2000. The only movie prior was Blade and that was successful. I know I thought the series was DEAD after Ratner's crapfest X3. Who cares how old she is and if she is in another movie or so, she looks good still and can act, her Phoenix character was written pretty poorly in X3. This will eventually get rebooted, Jackman can keep playing Logan as far as I'm concerned but it'll get re-done soon

Yes, lets further condemn Singer for essentially making the first team up superhero film.

Since you ALL hate Singer so much....let me ask, which directors you guys believe should helm X-Men?

Let me explain something.

X-Men, X2, First Class - Singer was heavily involved in all.
Wolverine, X3 - Singer was not involved in at all.

What does this tell you? It means Singer IS the reason these films are good.

Now tell me which director has shown passion for X-Men.

^^^
Whedon would have owned the Xmen films. Singer's Xmen movies are nowhere near as good as you think they are. I'm not going to give him credit for doing a good Xmen when Xmen movies should be inherently great.

Whedon would have known to make Cyclops the leader and not make Rogue into a Kitty Pryde/Jubilee clone. He would have known better not to cast Halle Berry with a fake accent. He would have know better than to hire a 35 year old woman who looks 40 to play Jean Grey.

Maybe a near 50 year old 6ft tall chick does it for you cougar chasers.

@Parissun, you're mistaking a good film with a faithful comic book adaptation. And also you're a [frick]ing whiny fanboy. A good film is a good no matter how much of the source material they deviate from.

Guys, you don't know what you talking about... The X-men franchise IS classy!!! The third film may not have been as good as the first two but Famke was classy throughout!!!! Bryan Singer is a God and even his superman film doesn't get the real credit it deserves!!! He is a Nolan in disguise!!!

I can't get enough of Famke Janssen,
she will always be my favourite CBM actress. She's drop dead gorgeous, still looks amazing even at 50 and I loved her as Jean Grey.

She needs to reappear in DOFP.

again another thread where someone actually lists First Class as an example of a good X-Men movie....
I don't remember which of the original 5 students were the Hispanic daughter of Jeff Goldblum's Fly character found in a strip club ?
JeighJeigh
JeighJeigh - 5/8/2013, 3:24 PM
If stuff like "they didn't use the original five" ruins the movie for you, can't you say the same about The Avengers since they didn't include Ant-Man or Wasp? But 90% of everybody loved The Avengers, so it doesn't make sense to me. Unless The Avengers gets some sort of special treatment. I would understand if that bothered you, but to let it ruin the movie for you is just weird to me.

GeekyCheekyChic
GeekyCheekyChic - 5/8/2013, 3:36 PM
But at least it was the Avengers minus Jan and Hank.
First Class was Alex Summers ? something as simple as which Summers brother is the oldest ? Angel-Fly stripper girl, token Black guy that can be later killed, Banshee ? and Furry Smurf.
Then heaven forbid Hellfire Club actually has Jason Wyngarde and Harry Leland...nope Azazel and RipTide ? oh and Sebastian Shaw is now the Nazi who killed Erik's mother. There is a world of shit wrong with First Class where you are comparing the lack of 2 Avengers...no comparison.

Ok, first of all, without the first two Xmen films, which WERE great, we wouldn't have nearly as many good comic films as we have. They arguably started the "dark and gritty" trend, and also reinvigorated the potential for CBM's in the box office far more than Blade did.

Also, whoever said the bit about the difference between a good film and a faithful film is dead on. Half of you hated Watchmen for some stupid reason, and that was the most faithful CBM to date. Then you praise Dark Knight Rises when it all but completely butchered the character of Batman. But everytime one of you idiots makes a whiney fanboy complaint about Xmen it has to do with the character and casting choices being completely different from the comics. Who cares?! They were great movies despite this, just like many other CBM's where backstory and characters were changed. You guys saw IM3 right? Jesus tap dancing Christ, that movie is possibly the most unfaithful comic adaptation side Batman & Robin, but half of you are praising it. You're double standards and hypocracy is giving me cancer.

Keep in mind that these movies are "adaptations". Not direct translations. They are made to not only appeal to us, but the hundreds of thousands of millions of casual movie goers who don't know anything about the comics. That's why directors and writers take liberties. They are trying to craft a story in 2 hours when you guys want 40 years of continuity fit in to one damn film. convoluted continuity by the way. No comic has a flawless track record of staying in line with their own continuity. First Class was a great movie on its own merit, and as it was making an attempt to loosely fit in with the movies that came before it, they couldn't use the original characters from the comic. They did great with the characters they used. Except fly girl. She sucked.

i agree with parissun, i wont break down the arguement word for word.

his initial arguement was if a studio is going to plan to make multiple movies why cast a person that is getting older NOTICABLEY i might add, there are a few supporting posts on here, somewhere in between the war of words that got lost.

other than cyclops beast nightcrawlerand that dude that played colossus the rest of cast was casted wrong.

but hindsight is 20/20
