Lauren Shuler Donner Reveals That 'The Hellfire Club' Very Nearly Got Their Own Movie!

In yet another interview during the promotion for the release of X-Men: First Class on DVD and Blu-ray, Lauren Shuler Donner reveals that there was very nearly a Hellfire Club movie, which may have included Jean Grey...

Talking to Total Film about the use of the villainous Hellfire Club in X-Men: First Class, producer Lauren Shuler Donner has revealed just how close they came to getting their own movie. "Bryan wanted to bring another element into it. I had always wanted to do the Hellfire Club because they're really fascinating. I almost wanted to spin them off into another movie. So I mentioned the Hellfire Club to him and he grabbed and said, 'That is a great idea.'"

So, that's how they ended up being included in the critically acclaimed movie from Matthew Vaughn, but whatever happened to that spin off?! "It didn't get to script," she continued. "It got to formulating who we would use and which story we would use because there's the whole Jean Grey part of the Hellfire story."

"I like the whole Jean Grey involvement. I thought that was really interesting."
Wow, Jean Grey, huh? Sounds like this would have been a much better direction for X-Men: The Last Stand to take, but it is pretty difficult to imagine the characters holding their own movie WITHOUT the X-Men also being involved somehow. What do you guys think? Be sure to share your thoughts in the usual place!

Brain Singer is a giant @$$h*!e. He should never ever touch another movie again! Especially an X-men movie. I say this for one simple reason, he does not and will not use the comics as source material. Hugh Jackman brought it up in an interview, that Brian would not allow any comics on the set during filming. Hugh had an assistant sneak them on set so he could read them (that's why he nailed the part). SO Brian thinks he do what ever he damn well pleases in the X-Men world. Which is why we got a first class with no first class. I vomit at the thought of them trying to do Hellfire club, look how off the portrayal is in this movie.

These interviews with Donner serve to remind us all how [frick]ing stupid Fox is.

Of course...
"Can I get a Big Mac?"
-"Would you like to make that a meal?"
"No, just the burger."
-"Would you like to try two apple pies for a dollar?"
"No, thanks."
-"You know we have our six-piece nuggets on sale today for a dollar..."
"Ummmm, can I just get my Big Mac?"

@Wakko none of the CBM's have been direct adaptation of there respective source material whether it be Marvel Studio's or WB. Not protecting Donner/Singer or Fox, none of the CBM's have been faithful adaptations.

It would be more fail like the last three X related titles. Fox has all but ruined the X-men franchise for the box office. First Class was a joke, Wolverine was ok but could have been waaaaay better, and Last Stand was horrible. The first two were descent at least. I mean in no way were they perfect, but they were alright. Hollywood and Fox (any movie studio really) should stop messing with the established lore that comics have created for the sake of a buck. If they did, they'd make what they wanted instead of trying to break even. Nobody wants to eventually see characters they've grew up reading be made into a movie and be nothing like they're represented in comics for some dip shit director to try and make his mark. If they want to make a mark on an established character and said characters' lore, go work for Marvel or DC and save us from watching horrible cbms!

There is no need for a Hellfire Club stand alone movie. Seems pointless without the X-men and them being the villians.

Talk about continuity errors....Jean and hellfire club.....60's.....headache. I learning to not think about continuity when watching FOX though. And the Dark Phoenix Saga would be awesome!!!

Hahaha yeah your like 5 years too late for that Lauren. That idea should have gone to The Last Stand. Now don't [frick] up a sequel to First Class by NOT doing the Sentinels. That's the next logical step in this saga. The Government's answer to their mutant "problem".

I would've liked a Hellfire Club movie, it would be a great sexy, classy story of a powerful group of people .. all dysfunctional and filthy rich. I would've had Sage infiltrating as part of the storyline.
CherryBomb
CherryBomb - 9/8/2011, 1:22 PM

@JWStubner as much as i'd love to see the Sentinels, the powerful technology surely wouldn't be around in the 60's ... and if it is a prequel, no mention of them has ever been seen in the X1 and X2 .. even in X3 they were seen as futuristic.

Lauren Shuler Donner is an utter hack, she just spouts out the same old crap time after time, thinking it is what we "want" to hear.
Hay how about actually doing what you say instead of producing more crap then pushing the blame later on.

Hellfire Club would make a better Television series than a movie.

She's been riding on Singer's coat tails for so long it's getting a little sad.

X-men movies aside she's never produced a good film. A quick glance at her IMDB profile and you can see her long, horrible track record.

they tried to 'reboot' x-men and it was not really a success. not a total failure, First Class wasn't awful, but i can't honestly say it was a success either. the film was simply not very good and i don't see any reason why the sequels would be any better unless they get a better writer to write the screenplay. i hate to say it but bryan singer's involvement will really put a limit on how good the films can be.

Maybe as a TV show...but not deserving of a movie so far.

Producers keep looking for the next great Hero tv show and they have so much source material to pick from. Instead of making some fake Comic heros like "Heros", Alphas and that other failed show a few years ago...

Make "Tean Titans", New Mutants, X-Force,..... so many books that will never see the light of a movie theater but can turn out awsome as a TV show.

Even if its cable show.

that's what the third one should have been about, instead of jean appearing out of nowhere we find out that the hellfire club has gotten their paws on her and convinced her she has always been a member of their team, and not the x-men. That would have made for one hell of a movie.
