Just like one of the movie's young heroes,
The New Mutants seems to be trapped in limbo.
Josh Boone's take on the popular Marvel Comics team still has its August 1 release date, but there are multiple reports that the film may not reach theaters at all, and instead find its way onto either Disney+ or Hulu. There's also a rumor doing the rounds that it might not even secure a streaming release.
Nobody seems to know for sure one way or the other, and that includes Maisie Williams, who plays lupine mutant Rahne Sinclair/Wolfsbane.
Here's an excerpt from the
Game of Thrones actress' recent interview with
Rolling Stone.
"She doesn’t mince words on the situation. “Who knows when the [frick] that’s gonna come out,” she says. There were supposed to be reshoots to “make it scarier,” she explains, but they haven’t actually taken place. She says she saw one of her co-stars, Charlie Heaton, the other day and asked him, “What the [frick] is going on with this movie?” He didn’t know either. She smiles. “Hopefully this interview will make everyone hurry up a little bit!” If it does ever come out, both she and Turner — who plays Jean Grey over in the main X-Men movies — are dying to get their characters together. “It would be ridiculously stupid if they didn’t do that,” Williams says."
As hard as it may be to imagine
The New Mutants simply being written off as collateral damage of the Disney/Fox acquisition, it's probably not a great sign when even the movie's cast are being kept in the dark about its status.
Hopefully it does see the light of day in some capacity, because there's a hell of a lot of talent involved, and Boone definitely seemed eager to attempt something different with the genre.
