Sunspot Actor Adan Canto On X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST

Canto says he did a ton of research for his role as Bobby da Costa aka Sunspot in Bryan Singer's X-Men: Days of Future Past. "I just find I work better that way when I understand what's in his mind, where he's coming from. I pretty much took most of the things I read and I brought them to the table."

Fandango caught up with actor Adan Canto at a press event for his upcoming ABC comedy, Mixology and asked the up-and-comer about his role as Bobby da Costa in director Bryan Singer's X-Men: Days of Future Past. "It wasn't entirely a new world because I had followed the previous movies, but I did jump into the comic books world a bit to understand: Who is this guy? What's his life like?," said Canto on joining Fox's cinematic world of mutant superheroes. When asked about his preparation for the role, Canto shared, "I just find I work better that way when I understand what's in his mind, where he's coming from. I pretty much took most of the things I read and I brought them to the table. He's a fiery guy. There's a lot of passion with Sunspot – a lot of experiences that brought him to want to explode all the time, but he's a positive guy. There was just a lot of material – very helpful!”

Of course, longtime fans of the X-Men series will have to wonder if Canto did all of this research for what will amount to a simple glorified cameo? But to be fair, Singer (arguably) gave all the featured characters in X-Men and X2 their appropriate level of screen time. It wasn't until X-Men Origins: Wolverine and X-Men: The Last Stand that the series jumped the rails with overloaded, continuity confounding character dumps. We'll all be able to find out just how much screen time Sunspot will receive in 'Days of Future Past' when the film opens in North America on May 23.

Hm... I thought Bryan Singer forbid his actors from reading comic books, so it wouldn't 'taint' their performances...

I have the feeling that this character will bring one of the best visuals of the movie, along with Blink, even with their short screentime.

Their powers have the potential to be one of the best.

hahaha

He will probably be 2 minutes on screen and with CGI just for show a new power on screen

I´m sure that Adan Canto never ever read a "New Mutants" comic-book

Singer or Adan have no idea about The New Mutants

Reboot that franchise please!

... I dunno. I feel sorry for guys like Canto. The kid who played the young Cyclops in Origins watched all of X-Men: Evolution in preparation for his 5-6 minute role (despite that show being great) :/ Hope to see a lot of Canto though.

I find funny how some fans complain about the new mutants having a short screentime, when in the comics and on many different events, there always are sooooo many mutants popping in and out, and none complain about it.

This is a HUGE scale X-Men story, and a movie around 2/2 and a half hours, so.... what kind of movie do you wanted? only with 12 MUTANTS? LOL

This movie will include many different countries and locations, so no way it would have just 12 or 15 characters.

Singer is a hack. Another mutant who has no business being in this movie.

@OldGreg

I liked "Prisoners" but thought the villain's motives were stupid.

They were waging war against God? Why? It's never explained.

It's the only weak point, thoug, IMO.

I can't remember if this guy is in any of the trailers. Hope he's been given some lines to say.
gambgel
gambgel - 2/8/2014, 5:14 AM
yeah, he was on the teaser trailer, same with all the new mutants on the future, and appeared on the instagram sneak peak too.

Its pretty clear the new mutants are there to show a bigger scale future, and to bring more appealing powers, with maybe one line or two at most for them.

But at least the studio IS introducing these characters, especially Bishop and Blink, curiously two pivotal characters on Age of Apocalypse. Just saying
RamonSuarez
RamonSuarez - 2/8/2014, 5:19 AM
They should have kept a narrow X-Men future roster like in the original - Shadowcat, Wolverine, Storm, and Colossus. Kitty gets sent back into time, not Logan. Past roster of Professor X and the whatever few mutants they want to keep from First Class on the X-Men. The Brother of Evil Mutants will have Magneto, Mystique, Toad. Bolivar Trask and 1970s Sentinels in the past with Nimrod and Mastermold in the future.

Everyone else is unnecessary filler.
gambgel
gambgel - 2/8/2014, 5:24 AM
really?

only 4 returning mutants on the future? that would be pretty boring and less exciting.

This is the biggest X-Men movie ever, so having a smaller cast would have been a wrong marketing decision
RamonSuarez
RamonSuarez - 2/8/2014, 5:37 AM
@gambgel

Most of the film will be in the past.

And they're focusing on 4 mutants in this movie anyways like they always do in a Singer movie (Wolverine, Xavier, Magneto, Mystique).
Jackraow21
Jackraow21 - 2/8/2014, 5:44 AM
@TheManFromMars, they were waging war against God because they lost their own son and were bitter with grief and rage over it. It was explained in the film.

Ramon hope ur wong mystique is boring aand that catching fire lady sucks..xvavier is the leader but plz no more wolverine..if singer dosent give other characters time ill be pissed..now bless this guy but was hoping for a darker sunspot. I really don't remember that.

I guess I got distracted by how ham-fisted that whole waging war against God final rant was.
RamonSuarez
RamonSuarez - 2/8/2014, 5:52 AM
@blkchi

Its pretty clear based upon the trailer that they will focus exclusively on the Big 4 of Wolverine, Xavier, Magneto, and Mystique. They even took Kitty Pryde's major role as the time traveler in the original comic and gave it to Wolverine.

@marvel72

Which is why I feel they should have streamlined their roster to be able to focus upon a strong core of heroes and villains.
gambgel
gambgel - 2/8/2014, 5:54 AM
@ramon

so are you trying to say that since the leads will be Xavier, Magneto, Wolverine and Mystique.... they shouldnt bring Kitty, Storm, Colossus, Iceman, Bishop, Blink and co?

so.... do we deserve a boring movie then?

what kind of logic is that? no offense. But.... it doesnt make any sense.
RamonSuarez
RamonSuarez - 2/8/2014, 6:00 AM
@gambgel

Didn't I just explain that they should include Colossus, Shadowcat, and Storm?
I did forget Bishop though...he should be around for this too.

But those characters are in the future. They have nothing to do with the past.

BTW, I don't think less means more boring. I'd rather have 8 well developed heroes than 14 poorly developed ones.

loki668
loki668 - 2/8/2014, 6:08 AM
Singer doesn't let them read the comics because he doesn't want them getting their hopes (of mattering) up.
RamonSuarez
RamonSuarez - 2/8/2014, 6:09 AM
BTW, for all this talk about how 8 heroes isnt' enough you realize that this is one less than how many the Avengers 2 will have (Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, Hulk, Black Widow, Hawkeye, Scarlet Which, Quicksilver, and Vision) after setting up that roster with 10 prior movies, around 6 one-shots, and a full season of TV show?
gambgel
gambgel - 2/8/2014, 6:13 AM
It all depends on tastes.

This is the seventh X-Men movie after 14 years, so yeah, I preffer to see a huge movie with a big and great roster, than to see 8 mutants that we have already seen these past 14 years.
RamonSuarez
RamonSuarez - 2/8/2014, 6:19 AM
@gambgel

The problem here is that the continuity is all [frick]ed up even though its the seventh X-Men movie. Taking away the 2 Wolverine movies - that added nothing to the X-Men mythology except Barakapool, a mechanized Silver Samurai, a stupid Blob, and a different Sabertooth - you will have the 3 Singer/Ratner X-Men which have to be reconciled with the First Class roster.

Both films contradicted each other on major plot points and really haven't set up The Days of Future Past timeline at all. This means there will lots of explaining and work cut out for this film. I don't see how they can make 14 work under those constraints.

RamonSuarez
RamonSuarez - 2/8/2014, 6:24 AM
And there's no point of adding a new 6 mutants if you're going to either shortchange them or flat out ruin them. We've seen this before in this trilogy. They wanted Sabertooth in the original X-Men and ruined his character so badly. Same thing with Deathstrike in X-Men 2. In X-Men 3 there was a major cluster of mutants who were just used as extras. Wolverine Origins was horrible in this regard too.
gambgel
gambgel - 2/8/2014, 6:32 AM
@Ramon

You just have to understand that studios do team movies with a 3 years gap or so, and actors get old, so we cant have a franchise with 10 team movies to develop and introduce all the known mutants we want.

Some will appear in 3/4 movies with decent roles, while other secondary mutants will appear on 1 movie or two at most. But at least they ARE appearing on the franchise.

These characters have fans too, so they have the right to see their fave mutants even if they appear only on 5 minutes, but if the actor is talented and has two cool moments.... why not?

Whats better? to see Bishop and Blink on this movie? or not to see them ever on this series?
RamonSuarez

"Some will appear in 3/4 movies with decent roles, while other secondary mutants will appear on 1 movie or two at most."

How many mutants have had decent roles in this franchise to be honest outside of the main 4?

"These characters have fans too, so they have the right to see their fave mutants even if they appear only on 5 minutes, but if the actor is talented and has two cool moments.... why not?"

For the reason I mentioned, they get ruined more often than not. Angel was ruined, Sabertooth was ruined, Deadpool ruined, Storm ruined, Cyclops ruined, Deathstrike was made badass but poorly developed especially in her background with Wolverine, etc.

Fans notice this and get pissed off.

"Whats better? to see Bishop and Blink on this movie? or not to see them ever on this series?"

To me its better to see them properly adapted. Blink doesn't belong here. Leave her for Age of Apocalypse. Keep Bishop.
