UPDATE: X-Men Rumor Reveals Surprising Plans For Ben Wang's MCU Debut As Bobby Drake/Iceman — Spoilers

According to a new rumour, Ben Wang's Iceman will reportedly be among the first mutants Jean Grey meets when she arrives at Xavier's School, suggesting the X-Men may already be assembled.

UPDATE: Knight Edge Media's Caleb Williams has since chimed in to add, "There's a possibility Gambit has a small role in [X-Men], and they have been casting for it since September. So, no Channing Tatum with Inde Naverette, but more age-appropriate."

We didn't expect Tatum to stick around, and it wouldn't make much sense to pair up the 46-year-old actor with the 25-year-old Obsession star. Hopefully, someone learns who is in the mix for Remy LeBeau soon.

Yesterday afternoon, the trades broke the news that Karate Kid: Legends star Ben Wang has been cast as Bobby Drake/Iceman in Marvel Studios' upcoming X-Men reboot.

The decision to cast an Asian actor as a character who is portrayed as white on the page has generated the expected online discourse. However, Wang's star is on the rise, and he'll be front and centre in this month's The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping.

Now, some intriguing new details about Iceman's role in X-Men have been revealed. According to Knight Edge Media, Iceman will already be at the X-Mansion when Jean Grey arrives and is set to be the first mutant she meets there.

This suggests that Professor X has already recruited mutants to his team before Jean. This may be a sign that, following her appearance in Spider-Man: Brand New Day, Jean will be our entry point into the team and perhaps even one of Charles Xavier's final recruits.

The image of Jean Grey walking through the doors of Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters and being met with Iceman shooting into frame on one of his iconic ice slides is pretty exciting (if that's the plan). For now, we'll just have to wait and see.

"I’ve just been digging into so many of the old comics and the entire Claremont run, and just going through stuff and really trying to think about what can we do well that feels new and feels different, and that hasn’t been done well before?" X-Men director Jake Schreier previously said. "Obviously, there’s such an incredible cinematic tradition of these comics, but what can we do? And how can we put our own spin on what that is?"

The prevailing theory is that X-Men will start with the original five mutants, with the likes of Rogue and Storm added to the team as the story progresses.

Directed by Jake Schreier (Thunderbolts*), the untitled X-Men movie stars Kit Connor (Heartstopper) as Scott Summers, Sadie Sink (Spider-Man: Brand New Day) as Jean Grey, Inde Navarrette (Obsession) as Rogue, Asa Germann (Gen V) as Angel, Ben Wang (The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping), Maya Boyd (& Juliet) as Storm, and Christopher Abbott (Catch-22) as Professor Charles Xavier.

Samara Weaving (Ready or Not) also stars as Emma Frost, alongside Adam Driver (Star Wars: The Force Awakens), who plays Nathaniel Milbury, an alias of Mister Sinister in the comics. There are also rumours that Marvel Studios will introduce Apocalypse as the next Saga's big bad.

X-Men will be released exclusively in theaters May 5, 2028.

@MuadDib - agreed. Race swapping in top of using a legacy character for D&I tokenism. When will they ever learn.

As it should. The one way race swapping hypocrisy needs to go.

Actually, ALL race swapping needs to go.

@Odekahn - It’s not that deep. No need to cry about it. There’s a thing called nostalgia. You are not obligated to watch this upcoming reboot. You can stick to watching the fox men movies where Shawn Ashmore (a white actor) played Iceman. You have a choice. So make it.

@Odekahn - If there was ever a time where race lifting characters compared to the source material could actually be to an adaptation's potential benefit, it'd be with the X-Men, given how often mutantkind served as an allegory for oppressed minorities and how many classic stories contend with prejudice and bigotry.

@UceOmega - Making a statement and having an opinion isn’t the same as crying. I could easily say “you’re crying about me crying” because you’re complaining about me voicing my opinion.

I’ll watch the new X-men, and Iceman is one of my favorite mutants. Doesn’t mean I can’t voice that I’m displeased with the shitty casting.

@asherman93 - @UceOmega - Asian Americans have the highest salaries in USA by race. More than whites. Highest levels of education. Pick any category across the board and they are winning and surpassing all other races. So how exactly are they being oppressed in 2026? I'll wait. Asian population in USA is 6 percent and USA Ivy League colleges are 43% Asian in the next class of 2030.
Odekahn
Odekahn - 11/3/2026, 10:11 AM
@Amaru - decades of source material history says it. He’s white and it’s every bit a part of his identity as minority characters and their identities.

People like me need to go? So, people against race swaps? Something tells me you’d be up in arms about a white actor playing Blade… so you’re ok with it as long as it takes away from white characters… hypocrite.

@muldoon - All those statistics you listed are irrelevant. I really don’t care about Asian superiority that’s your problem. All I care about is the actor’s ability to play the character. Can he channel Bobby’s strengths and weaknesses? Can he channel’s bobby’s personality as accurately as possible. Are we going to see a version of Bobby that demonstrates his omega level potential? That’s it. His performance depends largely on the writing and directing but you and the other crybaby really need to get over the race swapping.

You cannot change it, you are powerless to stop it but you do have a choice. You don’t have to watch the film. Stick to what makes you happy. Quit complaining about something that upsets you and get a grip.

UceOmega
UceOmega - 11/3/2026, 10:17 AM
@Odekahn - Like I said you have a choice. You don’t have to watch it. You can settle for the animated shows, original films, games and comics where iceman is white. You can skip this reboot. It’s not for racists or bigots like you. Hey ignorance is bliss. You’ll be much happier if you don’t watch it. See problem solved. Everyone’s happy.
Odekahn
Odekahn - 11/3/2026, 10:26 AM
@UceOmega - First, I already stated I’ll watch it. I love Iceman and I’m excited about the new movie, but AGAIN, that doesn’t mean I can’t express how I feel about the casting.

Second, you morons really don’t understand that you dilute the power your labels have when you throw them around so carelessly. I’d be racist if I said “only white characters should be protected from race swaps, and I don’t want to see minorities in my shows”, but I didn’t say that. I said “ALL race swaps” should stop. Equally, across the board.

Though expecting you to comprehend such a simple concept is apparently too much to ask.

@Odekahn - as a general rule I reject race swapping because it's just one way in Hollywood (against just whites). In truth though, I'm basically fine with race swapping *if* the actor still captures the sense and feel of the character in the comic or source material - however the worst ever is when no attempts are made to portray the character from the source and then they race swap on top of that just to be able to virtue signal that they gave representation, meanwhile the movie, show, character sucks fat ones.

@Odekahn - I knew you would get a bunch of stupid replies.

@asherman93 - No, its not a good time to race lift characters.

@@UceOmega - You are the same kind of person who will be all over this site, crying if the movie fails. This is a stupid FN decision. Its not rooted in anything but DEI bullshit. "All I care about is the actor’s ability to play the character." Oh really? So which character is beyond race or gender swapping to you? What if they casted an black Logan? Or latina Jean? See, thats the point. Guys like you spew this best actor for the role for over a decade now but no one believes it anymore. Marvel has swapped dozens if not more roles in the MCU. Spider-man alone has swapped most of its supporting cast. Ned, MJ, Jean DeWolfe, Flash, Betty, as did Daredevil... I can keep going.

@TheAmericanHero - 100% correct. None of these MCU people created those characters. They own the IP, they have no right to bastardize these characters time and time again. Its not a one off, they keep doing it. This is how we get female Silver Surfer, black Wonder Man, Eternals. It goes on and on and on.

@OneMoreTime - I’m actually hoping for this, at least in Texas. I (for the first time ever) voted straight ticket democrat because I can’t stand the republicans in this state.

I’m typically an independent and vote based on policy and the individual running. But Ken Paxton and Dan Patrick can get [frick]ed.

@Lucasberg - I understand what you’re saying, and to an extent agree.

My view is, if the actor doesn’t even look the part, they will not be the best actor for the job by default.

Where I can somewhat agree, Jeffrey Wright did make an amazing Jim Gordon imo.

And I also agree that virtue signaling is the worst.

@Odekahn - Generally I agree: don't look the part, you have no business playing the part - unless they can do some crazy make-up/costume or whatever. However, Iceman's defining feature is well, ice.

If Disney successfully translates something x-men faithful to Gen Z and Alpha by getting these certain newer actors in the mix then I'm down - as long as what's translated is something that very much characterizes essentially, a faithful and convincing portrayal of the X-men.
