LOGAN Director James Mangold Supports Hugh Jackman Returning As Wolverine In The Marvel Cinematic Universe

Filmmaker James Mangold was responsible for ending Wolverine's story in the X-Men Universe with 2017's Logan, but he's surprisingly on board with Hugh Jackman reprising the role in the MCU one day!

Logan was released in 2017 to overwhelmingly positive reviews, and while some fans were disappointed that the film didn't directly adapt Mark Millar and Steve McNiven's Old Man Logan, it proved to be a fitting finale for Hugh Jackman's Wolverine.

You might think that filmmaker James Mangold would be protective of the character after ending his story, but he has no problem with the X-Man returning in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, providing the story is right and it's something that does the Australian actor's Wolverine justice.

"I'd be startled that Hugh was strapping it on again," he admitted to ComicBook.com"The thing that I always want to know when I hear this is obviously, on the web, everyone trades in rumors. So, the nugget or the headline becomes the clickbait in the trade so that it would be, 'Downey's back,' or 'Jackman's back,' would be the headline, which people would then debate."

"What I'd be curious about if any one of these things happened would be, what are they doing with it? Meaning, I would have no qualm about it if someone had a good idea," he continued. "If it's basically, 'I ran out of money and I needed a big paycheck, and I'm doing an empty film that cheapens the quality of the previous.' Well, that would be its own sadness."

Jackman has now said on multiple occasions that he's hung up his claws and moved on from playing the X-Men character, so it would take a lot for Marvel Studios to convince the actor to return.

If he does, Mangold is unlikely to be involved, but he definitely sounds intrigued by the prospect.

I wouldn't mind seeing him, but I think the ship has sailed.

@MosquitoFarmer - Same here. I like him a lot but I hope we see a more CB-Accurate Logan.

@MosquitoFarmer - I'm all for Cap living in an alternate timeline until Peggy passed away and in that timeline he was Nomad and fought alongside Submariner, the Torch from CA-TFA and Wolverine back in WW2 and beyond.

@JonC - I'm not, cause I don't think that makes any sense within the MCU. We're not talking comic book freedom, but a limited cinematic universe. That's too far of a leap from where we are. To go that far that fast would just make Rob Liefeld grin from ear to ear.

I recently watched most of the X-Men films, the ones including Wolverine anyway. I must say, Mangolds “The Wolverine” was the only film that felt like a pure comic accurate Wolverine, as well as sort of solidified Jackman as Wolverine, made it his own (give or take his height, for who that matters to etc) Logan is another debate, because that feels less like a Wolverine movie, but something more personal and special to Jackman playing the role.

Every other film felt like you could replaced Wolverine with another actor and it would’ve worked, and I don’t mean that in a disrespectful manner! I just think it’s high time we put Jackmans legacy to bed, and cast someone younger who can blend their own take to fit in with the success of the MCU.

As iconic Hugh is as Wolverine, he's not getting any younger and the MCU should get an actor that they can count on for at least 10 - 15+ years. The X-Men should be a bug thing going forward in the universe, so I say let Hugh's Logan rest and its time for a fresh/new start.

@Twenty23Three - but now time and indeed the multiverse is in play... why can't he cameo as the Wolverine from another timeline while a different person is cast as Wolverine in the MCU prime timeline.

In my opinion Logan had the perfect ending, it was bittersweet. Leave it be

@RokoVII - Exactly. Ruining it for the novelty of what, more cross overs? Not worth it in the slightest.

@ekrolo2 - I still want to see Hugh Jackman cameo in the next Deadpool, but not as Wolverine.

@RokoVII - How about in a Deadpool movie Jackman is just a dude in a bar as a passing of the torch to others?

@JonC - i dont think jackman would do it honestly

In the name of all that's holy let it go. Aside from all the other points re Hugh's age and the need for longevity in the MCU, am I the only one who wants to see a short bulky, brutal looking guy in a masked suit as opposed to a six foot 2" handsome, lean dude in jeans and a vest?
Spock0Clock
Spock0Clock - 5/23/2020, 5:05 AM
@NicholiB - I have so much faith in Sarah Finn to do the X-Men justice when she casts them, but I doubt we're going to get all the comicbook fidelity boxes checked on Wolverine. I'm pretty damn sure we'll get the mask, though. If they were willing to do Carol's mohawk helmet, then there is no bridge too far.

@Spock0Clock - I just hope I can see the John Byrne version inside whatever they come up with. It was Byrne that decided to make Wolverine the star of the X Men, so he deserves a little recongnition.

I mean... he only supports it if it's the right kind of project. Jackman was fantastic in the role though, gonna be hard to top. Him in Logan is one of the best performances I've seen from a CBM

If, in the Multiverse, there is an Old Man Logan kind of thing, then maybe as a gag well after the MCU version is established (same thing with Maguire). Especially if there's a team like the Exiles or they play with Captain Britain/Excalibur as a dimension-hopping team.

But the MCU needs their own X-Men on their own terms. And the shadows of Fox aren't nearly as long as I think some people want to believe.

NO....time for a recast. There is an unknown actor out there that looks and is built like the comic book counterpart. Can they find a 5 foot 4 to 5 feet 6 stocky actor ?
NicholiB
NicholiB - 5/23/2020, 5:54 AM
@blitzkreg - The actor himself doesn't even need to be that short. They successfully disguised Hugh's height in the first X Men before deciding not to bother in the subsequent movies.

Think Gimli in LOR and that was 20 years ago. Modern effects could relatively easily shrink a 6 foot dude by a decent amount.

It would probably make sense to get someone with a stockier physique though.

He had a great arc that ended on a tremendous high note. Can’t we at least keep it that way for one character in the Fox stable?

Not Jackman, But Dafne Keen's X-23 👌, on an Exiles movie.
