X-Men Origins: Wolverine Downloaded 4 Million Times!

X-Men Origins: Wolverine Downloaded 4 Million Times!

Fox says that the unfinished pirated version has been downloaded about four million times, rather than the previously reported one million times.

According to reports by Variety and The Hollywood Reporter, 20th Century Fox is claiming that between four and 4.5 million Internet users have downloaded an illegal workprint copy of X-Men Origins: Wolverine since it was uploaded to the Internet on April 1. This is revised upwards from prior estimates placing the number of downloads somewhere in the vicinity of a million.

The degree to which this has affected the box-office take, if at all, has been the subject of some debate, with Fox apparently implying to Variety that the impact could be as high as $20 million. That seems high, since it presupposes that virtually everyone who downloaded it would have seen the film at full price in the theater, but bad word-of-mouth among fans who had seen the film shouldn’t be completely discounted either.

The film opened at more than $158 million globally–making it the biggest opening of 2009–and was the worldwide #1 movie of the week in spite of the Swine Flu outbreak causing Fox to delay the film’s opening in Mexico. The Variety story notes, though, the film underperformed in certain foreign markets where piracy is rampant, including Korea and Germany, which may lend credibility (considering its strong performance elsewhere overseas) to the notion that pirate copies of the film’s workprint did slow ticket sales at least in some parts of the world.

Wow! That many cheap people on this planet. I don't care how bad a movie is, its pathetic that people would rather see a movie that was videotaped out of someone's purse than spend a few bucks to see it in theaters or rent it. Good audio and video are always worth the money to me.

i managed to find the pirated version the other day (i waited and saw the film in the cinema rather than watch the copy back in april) and i turned it off by the WW2 flashback with no CGI and grey shapeless planes flying overhead rather than a decent picture...thats more annoying than watching a crappy copy filmed by a camera in the back row! if i cant see a film in the cinema ill wait for the blu-ray thanks!

I disagree, I think the reason so many people downloaded the film online, as opposed to watching it in theaters is simple... Hesitation.
We heard so many stories about what they were doing wrong, we just HAD to see for ourselves! This is a perfect example of why it is so detrimentally important that when you translate (any) material from one medium to the next, you have an obligation to stay as true to the source material as possible!
If they didn't want the backlash, maybe hire some decent writers for a change. Maybe Penn shouldn't pen anymore! lol

Jeepers, 4 million? and it still busted blocks! Guess Wolverine/Hugh Jackman is just a major draw even if he is in a mediocre movie..well, i think its better than mediocre but not by too much.

It wasn't the fantastic movie people hoped for and it still did well. They are pissed because so many saw it and probably bad mouthed it like alot of you said. They are just pissy cause they didn't cheat all the people out of their money. And what percent of the money would have been matinees and not just all night shows at top dollar. I think then they should offer people their money back if not satisfied with the movie. Then everyone will agree to never watch the bootlegs.

@adamant877@ As much as I would like to blame Penn for this movie I think David Benioff wrote but yeah I get what you mean. After all he did write X3 and I don't even want to start a discussion on that.

Ror you know I agree with you that I think it is better than mediocre. I was tempted to watch the bootleg because a relative had it but I just wanted to see a finished product before I made a judgement.

End of the day everyone (the average person) likes Wolverine (an there's not many comicbook heroes like that), which is why its making money!!!

An i bet HOLLYWOODS gonna find out the hard way when they do this again and again and again with other characters, an they will! ; )

OK i just wanna say, Is it really better to see a movie in the theater? The quality is REALLY bad. Sometimes, I cant wait for DVD or Bluray on my home system. So much better.

iron: lol You're right my bad. I know what you mean about the bootleg too, I have a disc that's been sitting on my entertainment center for weeks, my buddy gave it to me because he thought I'd want to see it. But I refused to watch it until I'd seen the finished product in theaters, and now it's just as useful as a coaster. ;-)

betty: I know what you mean, too. ever since I got our blu-ray player, I prefer it to watching movies in the theaters. It's just a good thing my wife manages one, otherwise I WOULD be waiting to see them until they came out!

Is there any way Marvel can buy back the rights to these films? I can't wait to see what they do with Thor and the Avengers. Spider-man was ok, it's just a shame two of their biggest and most famous properties are in other people's hands.

Deathlok I was just having this same converation yesterday. I am do not know what contracts were signed but there just has to be a way for Marvel to get the rights back for the characters they created.

whats cool is that if so many people have downloaded the movie, and the movie made $158,000,000 during its opening week, then, assuming of course that the people who downloaded it did so just so that they could see the movie or see it without paying, then imagine how much the movie would make if the people who downloaded it, actually went to the movie theater. also, that would mean that not only would be a popular movie, but it would almost completely ensure the chances of there being additional movies to follow in the path of X-Men Origins: Wolverine. think about it, not only would there be ones about wolverine, magneto, deadpool, and possibly gambit, but then there could be one about cyclops (maybe taking place after this movie), one about beast, or xavier, etc. on top of that, they could spread to other comic franchises, such as blade, or the silver surfer, or a dc character, maybe even a franchise not even associated with comic books

SaltyBoy93- like the name but it really gives away soooo much about you. Secondly based on that ;movie i would dredd seeing a Magneto , DeadPoop , Gamit , or anything else ass-o.c.-hated with this turd. I have seen it and i didnt pay for it at the theatres or any where. I do however appreciate your enthusiasm and youthful idealism . now run along the adults are talking. oOps!)
