X-Men Star Jennifer Lawrence Says "Absolutely F*cking Not" To Potential Mystique Return

X-Men: First Class star Jennifer Lawrence has shut down any chance of reprising her role as Mystique in the Marvel Cinematic Universe...

Though Jennifer Lawrence returning as Mystique always seemed highly unlikely after Marvel Studios announced that the X-Men franchise was being rebooted following the 20th Century Fox deal, with several actots from the Fox era reprising their roles for Avengers: Doomsday (and possibly beyond), there was a slim chance we might see the Academy Award winner back as the mutant shape-shifter at some point.

Rumor has it that Lawrence has been speaking to Kevin Feige about a potential MCU role, but it definitely sounds like the No Hard Feelings star is done with donning the blue paint!

“My favorite part of playing Mystique was the stunts,” Lawrence said during a video interview with Allure magazine. “It was so fun to train in that way and learn how to move. I had the same stunt double, Renee Moneymaker, who was Katniss. She is one of my best friends, so that was great. My least favorite part was most certainly the paint.”

When asked if she would ever consider playing Mysqite again, Lawrence seemed at least somewhat open to the idea... initially.

“Never say never... but absolutely [frick]ing not. You know how airbrushing is very cold? And I am ticklish. I learned how little sleep I can operate on and what can happen to the human mind when you’ve actually reached your breaking point. And patience!”

In a separate interview on the Call Her Daddy podcast, Lawrence recalled sitting in a makeup chair for eight hours each time she needed to transform into Mystique during the making of X-Men: First Class, which marked her debut as the character.

“For First Class, it was all body paint and glue. It was eight hours every time and ticklish. You’ve had airbrushing, right? Imagine two tiny, cold, compressing airbrushes all over your body. I am a hero. No one will understand what I went through.”

We still don't know whether Marvel has plans to introduce a new take on Raven Darkholme in the MCU, but we'd be very surprised if she showed up in the first X-Men movie that has Thunderbolts* director Jake Schreier on board to helm.

In related news, Christopher Abbott has revealed that he's still "not sure" if he'll be shaving his head to play Professor Charles Xavier in the upcoming reboot.

“My hair’s pretty thick," he told Esquire in a recent interview. "I’ve shaved my head for things before, and I’m down. But if my head is anything like my face, three hours later it’s going to be back. So I’m not sure because he’s not shaving his head every day. I want it to feel right.”

Cool. I always thought her Mystique was boring anyway.

A hero? I'm sorry but there's a difference between being paid millions of dollars for sitting in a makeup chair uncomfortably for hours to play make believe and running into a burning building to save a child. I'm sure it was uncomfortable, but it's pretty foolish to call yourself a hero.

SurfinSuperman
SurfinSuperman - 10/31/2026, 1:55 PM
@CerealKiller1 - She 'definitely' wasn't "dude". Her exact words were "I am a hero. Nobody will understand what I went through."

Because of tickles.

@TheFinestSmack - she clearly wasn't. Not when I've seen the way she has talked about it over the years. Look, you guys don't havebto try so hard to defend her.

@SurfinSuperman - It's obvious she's being sarcastic (as she usually is). You don't have to try so hard to criticize her.

@Polaris - I'm not trying hard at all. I'm just replying to comments I'm getting. And no, it's not obvious. She genuinely believes she suffered.
TheFinestSmack
TheFinestSmack - 10/31/2026, 4:49 PM
@SurfinSuperman - I don't ever like her. I typically avoid her movies like the plague but I've seen enough interviews to know she's usually cynically funny and likes to make fun of herself.
LoudLon
LoudLon - 10/31/2026, 4:53 PM
@SurfinSuperman - Look up a video clip of the interview. She's clearly being deadpan sarcastic.

Anyway, can't say I'll miss her in the role. I like Lawrence in general, she's delivered some very good performances, but I never liked her as Mystique. Sometimes even good actors can be miscast.
TheFinestSmack
TheFinestSmack - 10/31/2026, 9:26 PM
@LoudLon - I always felt like they just wanted to score her in the X-Men films and had no idea what to do with her. They knew she was going to be a big deal so they just settled on Mystique quickly for her.

Gotta' love the irony. Jennifer no longer has any interest to endure the makeup of the character but has literally transformed most of her face to the point of barely being recognizable in some photographs. 🥸

She's a terrific actress. Beautiful, funny, self-deprecating .She had a younger, innocent take on Mystique which was right for where the character was at the time. Rojman had the right sinister approach for the older version. I don't blame her for not wanting to paint her whole body again.

Was miscast anyway. And Mystique led the team which is completely wrong. Mystique is morally conflicted at times and though they touched on that Jennifer does not come across bad enough for the role. Her niceness comes out too much.

No one will understand what I went through, except maybe Rebecca Romijn, the Mystique before you. She thinks she’s the only one who had to go through that.

Timerider - 10/31/2026, 4:34 PM
@dragon316 - it wasn’t his whole body like it was for Jennifer and Rebecca. For Nightcrawler, it was his legs from the knee down, his arms, and his head/upper chest area. Jennifer and Rebecca was everywhere and everything.

What we got was not Mystique and that coupled with her makeup complaints. Be more like Paul Bettany, he acknowledges his salary is compensation for the make up process. Rebecca Romijn was superior to Lawrence anyway

She’s a real life Mystique. I can’t even tell it’s her today based on her transformation.

@JustAWaffle - I was about to say that. She destroyed her eye shape which was so distinctive.

Bizarre.
JustAWaffle
JustAWaffle - 10/31/2026, 4:00 PM
@Fogs - I don’t know why her alterations make me queasy. We see it in so many others, with horrific results, but they didn’t look very natural to begin with (at least by how they paint themselves up).

Lawrence just always had a natural look to her, so it’s more sad.
Batmangina
Batmangina - 10/31/2026, 4:05 PM
She was the WORST [frick]ing thing about the second batch of FOX-MEN and shoehorning her into the Xavier backstory was lame as [frick].

Fassbender and McAvoy made them work - everything else was hot swappable.

@Batmangina - I hate it as well. Mystique was a 3rd class villain at best. There are a hundred better X-Men to add before her.
