Simon Kinberg Explains 'Apocalypse''s "Cosmic" Costume In X-MEN: APOCALYPSE

Apocalypse's look in Bryan Singer's X-Men: Apocalypse has been a divisive subject these past few months, and while a recently leaked image eased the minds of some, many still aren't convinced. Now, producer and writer Simon Kinberg explains why they've chosen that costume...

The X-Men movies have avoided costumes for the most part over the years, with only Matthew Vaughn's X-Men: First Class embracing the colourful look of the mutants from the comic books. That's what makes Apocalypse's appearance so surprising (let's be honest, him being just a regular looking Oscar Isaac in a suit wouldn't have been too shocking based on past experience), and Simon Kinberg attempted to explain that in a recent interview with MTV at the Toronto Film Festival.

"I feel like we have been, the ’X-Men’ franchise, has been growing a little bit more into science fiction. I think ’Days of Future Past’ with time travel and the Sentinels took us into a slightly broader, more science fiction world than the films had occupied in the past. We felt like the movies were ready for something that was slightly more, let’s say, cosmic. Once we made the decision for Apocalypse to be the villain at the center of the movie, we wanted to be true to the comics, which are sort of, like you, say, not costume, but it’s not just a guy in a helmet. It is more cosmic."

As well as returning cast members Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence, and Nicholas Hoult, X-Men: Apocalypse will also introduce Alexandra Shipp, Sophie Turner, Tye Sheridan, Kodi Smit-McPhee, Lana Condor, Oscar Isaac, Ben Hardy, Olivia Munn, and a number of others. The movie is set to be released on May 27th, 2016. Do you guys like Apocaypse's big screen costume or do you think they should have gone a different route? Be sure to let us know in the usual place!

Once again Simon Kinberg spouting about how much he wants to stay true to the comics and please the fans. And yet every time he works on a movie we as fans get the opposite. Then he'll say he was disappointed about the way it turned out and repeat the cycle. Maybe that's just my opinion, but I really don't like this guy. He comes across as so dishonest at this point.

I'm not confused by the "cosmic" part. I'm confused by the part in which he seemed to have difficulty with forming a coherent sentence.

This list pretty much says it all, Kinberg has failed upwards through the ranks of Hollywood hacks.

2015 Fantastic Four (screenplay)
2014 X-Men: Days of Future Past (screenplay) / (story)
2012 This Means War (screenplay)
2009 Sherlock Holmes (screenplay)
2008 Jumper (screenplay)
2007 Mr. and Mrs. Smith (TV Short) (writer)
2006 X-Men: The Last Stand (written by)
2005 Mr. & Mrs. Smith (written by)
2005 xXx: State of the Union (written by)

Days of future past is his only half ways decent script and it's full of terrible characterizations and plot holes.

Once again I ask the question, how is it that people believe that just because we see a picture of Apocalypse from a different angle some how making the movie better? Alien Tech are some of you just reading WAY too into this stuff. I mean most of the speculation for these X-Men movies are way off,but to your credit they sound and often are better than the movies themselves. Once again proving Fox has no clue how to make these movies.

I think I understand what he meant.

"I feel like we have been, the ’X-Men’ franchise, has been growing a little bit more into science fiction. I think ’Days of Future Past’ with time travel and the Sentinels took us into a slightly broader, more science fiction world than the films had occupied in the past."

That is fairly straightforward.

"We felt like the movies were ready for something that was slightly more, let’s say, cosmic. Once we made the decision for Apocalypse to be the villain at the center of the movie, we wanted to be true to the comics, which are sort of, like you, say, not costume, but it’s not just a guy in a helmet. It is more cosmic."

Apocalypse has recently been compared to a deity by O. Isaac. Now Kinberg is talking about cosmic level power. i.e. godlike power.

Given the film universe that they have constructed for the X-Men, Apocalypse wearing a helmet makes perfect sense. Xavier and Jean Grey won't be the first telepaths that he has encountered. His costume may look somewhat absurd in that still, but I think it is meant to be practical. As for whether his suit has extraterrestrial origins in the movie, lets hope not.

@MaddAddaM - "DOFP might be decent"

And Kinberg is NOT solely responsible for writing DoFP.

Matthew Vaughn when asked how much of his initial take ended up in Days of Future Past:

“I’d say 90%. I mean, we worked on the script [Simon] Kinsberg and I. It was a really tough decision for me, because I pulled out just because I’d finished the Kingsman: The Secret Service script at the same time and I was like “My god if I don’t make a fun spy movie right now, somebody else’s going to do it.” And I think there’s five coming out next year now. So we’re going to be the first of it not the last. Bryan [Singer] did a few things, which I thought were genius that weren’t in my script. I had Juggernaut breaking into the Pentagon, he changed it to Quicksilver and did that [frick]ing brilliantly, I have to add. My idea was the sentinels at the end, I wanted them to look like Mystique. I thought there should be thousands of mystiques attacking them in the future. He changed a few more of the mutants, but it was pretty close. Yeah, it was pretty close.”"

They should have gone with an all CGI character for Apocalypse, like they did with Andy Serkis for Gollum in LOTR.

But I'll reserve judgement for now and wait until I see him in a trailer or the movie itself. He may still end up looking great.

I think they should definitely make him look taller in post production though, like Xerxes in 300.
