X-MEN: APOCALYPSE Has the Most 'Mass Destruction' of the Franchise, Says Director Bryan Singer

Possibly hinting that we could see Jean Grey, Cyclops, or “familiar characters” in a younger iteration, X-Men: Days of Future Past helmer Bryan Singer says he'd like to tell more stories post-Apocalypse!

In the latest issue of Total Film magazine, for which X-Men: Days of Future Past has made the cover, director Bryan Singer talked a bit about the forthcoming X-Men: Apocalypse. “We're going to deal with the notion of ancient mutants - the fact they were born and existed thousands of years ago,” Singer rehashed. “But it'll be a contemporary movie - well, it'll take place in the '80s... The '80s is a period now - it's hard for me to believe that!” He continued, Apocalypse will have more of the mass destruction that X-Men films, to date, have not relied upon. There’s definitely now a character and a story that allow room for that kind of spectacle.” As for his process on the 2016 sequel, Singer says, “We’re currently breaking the story. We’re almost ready to go. Dan Harris, michael Dougherty and Simon Kinberg are in the office across the street from me, working on story stuff right now. It’s great to have Dan and Michael back.”

Asked who can we expect in the X-Men Apocalypse lineup, besides First Class characters, Singer says “I don’t want to get too specific, but we’ll introduce familiar characters in a younger time. That’ll be fun to show the audience. I call these movies in-between-quels. It’s a mind-[frick] sometimes in terms of where things fall in the timeline!” Finally, Bryan Singer was asked if there are X-Men stories he'd like to tell beyond Apocalypse. “Yeah, there actually are,” he assured. “It all stems back to when I did [the first] X-Men. You always want to know where a character’s going to go, what their future’s going be like. You can always sequelise. But on that film I also had actors asking ‘Who am I? Where did my character come from?’ So as a director you always need a backstory to give your actors. It may not be the right backstory, but it’s one you can give the actor to help them understand their character. These prequels are really exciting for me because they give me a chance to explore ideas I came up with more than a decade ago.”

After X-Men: Days of Future Past opens May 23, 2014, X-Men: Apocalypse will hit on May 26, 2016

Cyclops and Jean or GTFO...

By the way isn't the timeline kind of irrelevant after DOFP? Wolverine going back into the past (and stopping the Sentinel program) surely changes everything.

The timeline was always irrelevant in this franchise, what are you talking about

@Jedi Why would Fox just give it back to Marvel? It's one of their biggest franchises.

@Pasto They make a ton of money off of X-Men. I'm no businessman, but I don't think Fox would give away the rights just because they don't "handle it properly".

I won't disagree. They made a lot of money. But the smart/reasonable/'man for the people' move would be for them to give the rights back to Marvel.

I mean, Fox has blown so many chunks with the 'X-Men'. Either give the rights back, or cut off the ulcer that is Bryan Singer.

Come to think of it, I don't remember a whole lot about my early years. What I do remember is kinda random. However, I DO remember sipping from some dude's beer at some f*ckin' party when I was still a knee-high little shit.

Whoever that arsehole was- thank you very much, I think I love you.
TheYoungMan
TheYoungMan - 3/14/2014, 7:36 AM
I guess it's possible they could sell it back to Marvel, but I don't think Marvel would be willing to pay the amount Fox would need to part ways with X-Men. Unless the X-Men movies start flopping hard over and over again and Fox is willing to sell it for dirt cheap, I don't see things changing. Question: Does Fox's cinematic rights to X-Men ever expire in the deal they have?

Young Cyclops, Jean and Storm plus Beast, Professor X and Magneto...and...Cable!!! Please make it happen. That would set up both future X-men films and X-Force at the same time.

TheAmbassador- Hahaha, I know, man. I just turned 25 last week, and I'm still gettin' used to the fact that time just ain't slowin' down. I look like I'm about 19, though.

I've got one of those youthful faces.

Which is a problem when you're the dude behind the bar, and you turn someone down for being too f*cking young to be there. My favourite line of the night is usually- "but you look like a f*cking kid yourself, maaaaaaaan". It's usually a variation of the same ol' "I'M TOO YOUNG?! F*cking look at you, MAAAAAAAN!!".
