Trailer:
“We will destroy Max’s greatest dream. Sharkboy and Lavagirl!”
Little does anyone know but Christopher Nolan is one of the biggest plagiarizers that we have ever seen. After stealing the central concept of this classic kids film that warmed the hearts of adults and children alike, he went on to pretend it was a “genius original idea”. It is a lie. Nolan is nothing more than an overrated thief. This is the real way to make a film about dreams.
This was before the days when 3D was little more than a gimmick as used now. Here the makers really knew how to utilize it and have stuff flying at you! It was exciting, it was fresh. Not only that with the top of the line CGI they managed to create a world even more vibrant and detailed than what was found in Avatar. When watching you’d have a hard time not believing you had been transported to dream land.

The film also utilizes some great acting talent from the likes of Taylor Lautner, who would come off this hit to work on the much beloved and critically acclaimed Twilight franchise. Finding a child actor is always difficult (take Aang in Last Airbender or Doc in the Shinning for example. Terrible!) but the makers struck gold here. Lautner comes off as both emotionally believable and comedic as well. When I first saw him I thought, here is a kid with a lot of talent and will go far. He might even make it into the music genre with a great song that kids will surely be still singing ten years from now.
Then there is his partner Lavagirl. A tragic character who melts everything she touches. I actually teared up in one section when she realized she can never have physical contact with people. Rogue from X-Men looks like a cheap and flat character next to her dynamically written personality.
Even the main character Max shines as a fun relatable character that you want to share adventures with. George Lopez also did a phenomenal roll. It isn’t easy to play two characters at once but he pulled it off in style! He had be rolling on the ground laughing at times, but then again what more would you expect from a master comedian of his caliber.
Yes I do be believe there isn’t one thing I would change about the casting of this film.
The plot of the film is richly original and engaging, not one boring moment to be had as we watch Max and his superhero friends race to the stop the evil robot and save dream land. Inception is preposterous and convoluted but here the REAL genius filmmaker Robert Rodriguez is smart enough to keep things nice and simple. By doing so he creates a fast fun film that keeps you on the edge of your seat rather than trying to figure out what is going on.
Overall The Adventures of Sharkboy and Lavagirl are a shinning example of how to do a children’s film right. It blows all the overrated competition out of the water such as Neverending Story, Alice in Wonderland, and any of those Pixar turds. It is superior family entertainment that I see people enjoying for many generations to come.
