Here is the press release in full..

LOS ANGELES, CA, MARCH 3, 2011—Warner Bros-based financing and production company Alcon Entertainment (“The Blind Side,” “The Book of Eli”) co-founders and co-Chief Executive Officers Broderick Johnson and Andrew Kosove, in the most significant property acquisition negotiations in the Company’s 13-year history, are in final discussions to secure film, television and ancillary franchise rights to produce prequels and sequels to the iconic 1982 science-fiction thriller “Blade Runner.”

Alcon is negotiating to secure the rights from producer-director Bud Yorkin, who will serve as producer on “Blade Runner” along with Kosove and Johnson. Cynthia Sikes Yorkin will co-produce. Frank Giustra and Tim Gamble, CEO’s of Thunderbird Films, will serve as executive producers.

Alcon’s franchise rights would be all-inclusive, but exclude rights to remake the original. The Company, however, may produce projects based on situations introduced in the original film. The project would be distributed domestically by Warner Bros. International rights are yet to be determined.

Johnson and Kosove stated: “We are honored and excited to be in business with Bud Yorkin. This is a major acquisition for our company, and a personal favorite film for both of us. We recognize the responsibility we have to do justice to the memory of the original with any prequel or sequel we produce. We have long-term goals for the franchise, and are exploring multi-platform concepts, not just limiting ourselves to one medium only.”

Among its many distinctions, “Blade Runner” has been singled out as one of the greatest movies of all time by countless polls and media outlets, and overwhelmingly as the greatest science-fiction film of all time by a majority of genre publications.

Released by Warner Bros. almost 30 years ago, "Blade Runner" was adapted by Hampton Fancher and David Peoples from Philip K. Dick's novel “Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?" and directed by Ridley Scott following his landmark “Alien.” The film was nominated for two Academy Awards (Best Visual Effects, and Best Art Direction).

“Blade Runner” was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant." The film was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry in 1993 and is frequently taught in university courses. In 2007, it was named the 2nd most visually influential film of all time by the Visual Effects Society.

Alcon’s COO Scott Parish and head of business affairs David Fierson are negotiating on behalf of the Company.

This better be a truer representation of "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?" by Philip K.Dick or there is no point to this.

Whats the big deal? If the movies suck, they suck. It doesn't take away anything from the first AMAZING film. I'd prefer them to at least try and make a sequel/prequel. What if its good? The Blade Runner universe has a lot of room for exploration. But if the film fails, just pop in the original and have a good time.

who cares if they make a prequel/sequel to Blade Runner, if you guys are so angry then don't watch it, end of story.

P.S. Ridley Scott has been toying with the idea of a Prequel/Sequel of Blade Runner for years, but he never did it because of problems with the rights.

Sorry got my wires crossed. Not a reboot, but prequels and or sequels. Apparently they can't outright remake the original.

Doesn't bother me too much that they want to doin spin off's , may even be good! When I thought it was a remake I was booking flights to [female dog] slap WB.

There is a lot more in teh world that Dic created as well as the movie universe(which is actually very different) to explore. Get the right director and cast and who knows?

@Gambit89 I feel ya. It's sad really, there are tons and tons of excellent books out there that would make stellar films. But Hollywood likes to try and fix a product that ain't broke.

Remake no fracking way! Sequel or prequel maybe. Personally I can't stand any version of the film except the theatrical release. I waited years to get BR on DVD so that I could have that version. If it has a Unicorn at the end or doesn't have the Harrison Ford voice over its not Blade Runner.

It's amazing how few of you read.

"Alcon’s franchise rights would be all-inclusive, but exclude rights to remake the original."

I saw this movie in theaters when it was first released. It burned into my brain, for all time, what a science fiction movie was supposed to be. For decades I have wanted to see more of Dick's dystopian future seen through Scott's lens and can't wait to see the projects that come out of this.

@Fuel don't give them any ideas.

I love Blade Runner. One of my favorite movies, ever. I don't mind the notion of a sequel or prequel, as long as it doesn't turn out like the Star Wars prequels.

On an unrelated note, I highly suggest the computer game Gemini Rue to anyone that digs Blade Runner or any sci-fi noir-type things. It plays like Out of this World and Flashback. It's an indy game, I bought it a few days ago and LOVE IT.

But get some real talented director to do prequel.

Don't get some hack like Sommers or Bret Ratner.

^^^^ I run a film club and once we showed the film Whats Up Doc? with Streisand and O'neal.

Many castigated Ryan O'Neal on his 'performce' in this film and his 'abilities' as a professional actor.

I ALONE stood up for him. I argued that his work was nuanced and emotional showing considerable skill and energy.

WITNESS EXHIBIT A!!!!

This is a TRAVESTY! The first was a masterpiece - anything more would only cheapen the original experience! Case in point - anyone old enough to remember the original 'Highlander'? When it first came out, it was nearly PERFECT! But the bastards that owned the property decided to squeeze every drop of blood they could from that stone, and now the franchise is a joke! PLEASE, don't let this happen to another classic!!!
FoxForce5
FoxForce5 - 3/3/2011, 8:18 AM
I'm cool with this. Afterall, didn't last year's remake of "A Nightmare on Elm Street" teach us that 100 poor seuquels are better than 1 unwatchable remake? If I go and watch the comicly-bad "Freddy's Dead" then go watch the original, it only re-enforces how scary-good the original was but the remake $#!+s all over and wipes it's @$$ with the original! So, sequels, prequels?... Bring 'em on! Just leave the clasic alone!!!

This sounds great to me. If they get a good director onboard, we're in for a real treat.
loganoneil
loganoneil - 3/3/2011, 1:40 PM
Flagg - The ONLY way I could see it POSSIBLY happening without falling flat on its face is if Ridley Scott gave it his personal 'okie-dokie' and took the helm himself. I think that would be the ONLY way to calm the hardcore fanboys (like myself) & girls out there...

If Alcon can do this right, and treat the great source material (Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep) correctly, why wouldn't I be excited about this.

I'm OK with 1 prequel and 1 sequel, done correctly, with Christopher Nolan or Ridley Scott himself directing.

There is a danger to overdo this with too much material: a tv show that morphs into a CGI cartoon, that morphs into a videogame, that morphs into a lunch box or a happy meal.

I think the perfect mix is one prequel + one sequel, supported by comic book and novel adaptations, maybe some videogames, plus some high-end collectibles. That's it. No TV Shows, no coloring books.
