Brad Bird's Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol has remained #1 at the US box office, reaching $100M on Thursday and $200M internationally on Friday, bringing its current global total to over $300+M so far. That means the movie starring Tom Cruise and Jeremy Renner is well on its way to being the most successful instalment of the franchise yet, with analysts predicting yet another strong weekend. After a soft opening, Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows is also picking up speed after passing the $100M mark earlier this week. Box office means little or nothing to me.I judge each movie on it's own merrits acording to my tastes.I don't really care how much a movie took at the weekend because there're so many contributing factors i.e.How many people had a free weekend,could they take their kids,and what else happened to be among the limited choices at the cinema at the time.It's definately no indication of quality.

Shouldn't the headline actually read "Dark Knight Rises Prologue with film attached makes $300 Million"?

MI3 is still my favorite of the series, but this one was amazing. Saw it on IMAX, yasterday. Here's hoping for a fifth installment.

@HavocPrime- Lmfao

The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo should be higher than Alvin and the Chipmunks: Shit-Wrecked.

My girlfriend and I didn't really care for it. Started out okay...got a little bit boring...picked up some, but seemed to be all too familiar as the film played out. Renner's scenes toward the end seemed too much like Cruise's scenes in MI1. Not many surprises and not that intense for us. We thought it was fairly "meh" overall.

Havoc@ You do realize there were only a handful of theaters overall that showed the prologue. I doubt it made that much of a significant impact on the overall sales. Only the hardcore Batman fanboys would have gone to see the film just for that and judging from the smattering of applause in the leaked prologue clips at the end of the prologue, I don't think there were that many fanboys paying just to see that, unless they were disappointed and didn't feel like clapping.

TDKR prologue is only attatched to a select bunch of IMAX showings. You know the only one in Tampa is located within our Museum of Science and Industry (MOSI)... and they charge $2 parking every hour? No freakin way. See, that sounds silly, especially when most metropolitan areas will have you feed the meter or park in a garage. In fact, the other big IMAX downtown allows you to redeem your parking in the adjacent parking garage. MOSI however, has been a ghost-town for the past 10 years, with no real attractions and half of the actual museum closed down to service a glorified kindergarten center.

I mention this because MOSI (even though the downtown IMAX is also "true IMAX") is desperate to get your money, in such a way that people misunderstood Ghost Protocol's attached release. I went to go see Ghost Protocol the weekend before it came out in regular theaters, and caught it at my theater's regular IMAX, which means that it only had TDKR trailer.

This movie stands on its own merit.
Amazo, did you watch it yet, or are you just saying that because you're not sure if you'll like it or not?

This one pays subtle homages to the series, with the only continuity being the mention of Ethan's wife and a somewhat spoilerish divorce. A running joke in the movie is that Simon Pegg's character Benji REALLY wants to wear a face mask, and when it comes time for his character to utilize one, the machine constructing it breaks. That over-the-top device in MI:2 is therefore, intentionally left out.

Despite starring and being produced by Tom Cruise, he is the team leader, and not the only field agent to grab the action. Jeremy Renner and Paula Patton get top marks for bouncing dialogue off of Tom Cruise and especially Simon Pegg, who as always is a goof.

The trouble is the plot and the villain. Michael Nyqvist's lines may just be dubbed for as many as there are... one quickly gets the idea that the actor may not speak that much english as the character's lines are not only brief, but feature a British accent.... but there might not be any truth to that. Point is, he doesn't really talk, and there is no substance to the character - he is just there to be pursued.

The plot, likewise, is something of a repeat of the first movie, where Nyqvist's character has framed the IMF for a bombing that he himself committed to try and start nuclear war. The IMF are branded terrorists (although the only person content with hunting them down is just one Russian agent), and are therefore on their own while Nyqvist tries to launch a nuclear missile at the San Francisco bay.

Still, this is one of those movies where the plot makes little difference. When I told this to my friends, I compared it to Pulp Fiction in a way that you don't really care what is going on in the grand scheme of things, it's just the character interaction, the fun dialogue, the stunts, and the masterfully filmed action pieces that make this incredibly entertaining and fun to watch all throughout.

@MovieMaster

yeah of course it should be higher then Alvin and the Chipmunks but heres a major factor. Alvin & The Chipmunks: Chipwrecked is a kid movie so it will make more money compare to The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo which is aim towards adults.

we all know The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo is a better movie.

@ Azazel1 Yeah right, buddy. =P

Ghost Protocol had the best writing of the series second only to the first, so the success is deserved. Was very entertained. Bravo, Renner, bravo.
