The Hollywood Reporter has revealed that David Goyer has signed on to direct an adaptation of Alexandre Dumas' classic revenge tale for Constantin Films. Apparently Goyer's work on Christopher Nolan's
Dark Knight trilogy and the upcoming
Man Of Steel helped him land the gig, as word is that Constantin’s approach for
Monte Cristo will be something like Warner Bros. take on not only their
Sherlock Holmes movies but its DC characters also, with a source telling THR that a buzz phrase for Monte Cristo is “19th century Dark Knight.”
“During my career I’ve enjoyed re-invigorating and contextualizing classic characters that are relatable to contemporary audiences,” Goyer tells the site.
“Michael has written an excellent script and I’m going to enjoy bringing our take of the rich and textured world of Monte Cristo to the big screen.” There have been numerous adaptations of the novel, most recently Kevin Reynolds directed a pretty good one back in 2002 starring Jim Caviezel and Guy Pearce.
