We’re edging closer to the final entry of Daniel Craig’s tenure as Ian Fleming’s super spy but we still don’t know much about it. One of the major question mark, as always, is who will direct the upcoming untitled Bond 25.
While many names have been passed around the rumour mill, one director - Memento’s Christopher Nolan – a common internet favourite and even someone who has over the years spoken to EON producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson about the prospect, has made it clear that it won’t be him.
Speaking to BBC Radio 4 the Best Director nominee had this to say:
“I won’t be the man. No, categorically. I think every time they hire a new director I’m rumoured to be doing it.”
The desire for Nolan to direct Bond is an obvious one, he is one of the most consistent and best directors working today, capable of delivering blockbuster spectacle while imbuing it with a maturity and intelligence not readily found in most.
Not to mention his love for the franchise and clear echoes in his work, most notably like the snow chase inInception and the opening plane sequence from The Dark Knight Rises.
Nolan doesn’t rule himself out for a future foray into the world of 007 however stating:
“I love the character, I love the films, I’ve been very inspired by the films as anyone who’s seen my films will find embarrassingly obvious. But you’d only take on a franchise like that if you could bring something completely new to it, if that were needed. And I think at the moment they’re doing fantastically well without me”
This would make sense and seem to follow Nolan’s work ethic and approach to established properties, so the chances are we might even see a Bond project from him when it comes time to recast, as after a reboot as strong and defining as Casino Royale was for Bond, the franchise would certainly need something new.
What do you think? Are you upset that Nolan won’t be taking on Bond 25? Who would you like to see the direct the film? And what would your dream Christopher Nolan James Bond look like? Leave your thoughts in the usual place.
