It might well be the most ludicrous movie franchise in the history of cinema, but audiences sure do love them some Fast and Furious, and the latest installment, F9, now looks set to smash a box office record.
The movie, which stars Vin Diesel as street racer turned world-saving hero Dominic Toretto, took in a very impressive $30 million on Friday from 4,179 theaters in North America, and is now on track for a massive $66 million weekend. This would not only surpass A Quiet Place Part II as the highest-grossing movie of the "Pandemic Era," but would give F9 the biggest domestic opening since Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker in December 2019.
Like John Krasinski's horror sequel, F9 is an exclusive theatrical release and will only hit premium VOD after a 6-week window. This should give it a distinct advantage over Marvel's Black Widow, which is set to debut in theaters and on Disney+ on July 9, but we've learned never to underestimate a Marvel Studios movie!
F9 has been playing internationally for a while, and has now raced past $300 million. This past weekend, Fast and Furious became the fifth-biggest franchise globally with $6.2 billion. The action flick has yet to screen in some key markets, and will open in the U.K. and Ireland this weekend.
