FREE GUY Star Ryan Reynolds Explains Why He Didn't Want To Include A Deadpool Cameo In The Movie

Free Guy is a movie that Disney inherited from 20th Century Fox during the merger between the two companies, and we know from the reviews that we should expect a lot of cameos.

Ryan Reynolds even suited up as the Merc with the Mouth for a promo with Marvel Cinematic Universe character Korg, a glimpse at what could be to come when he also joins that shared world. Despite that, the actor has now explained why he never planned to include Deadpool in Free Guy

"For me, the thing that I love most about Free Guy is that we’re doing something that I think is very increasingly rare, and very hard to do in this current marketplace. Which is open a big blockbuster movie that’s based on nothing but an original idea," Reynolds tells Cinema Blend"I mean, it really isn’t an IP, it’s not a sequel, it’s not based on a comic book, it’s not based on anything."

"It’s based on a concept and an idea that people are familiar with, which is the video game world. I love that we had that opportunity, so no, I never really felt like I needed to put Deadpool in. He wouldn’t really fit in there. We do have some massive surprises in the movie that are courtesy of getting to work at Disney. But yeah no, I never thought of putting Deadpool in there."

We're definitely intrigued by the mention of cameos that were made possible by Disney, especially as the studio holds the rights to a seemingly endless list of Marvel and Star Wars characters.

Meanwhile, work on Deadpool 3 continues, and Reynolds recently revealed that he expects cameras to begin rolling next year. We still don't know how Wade Wilson will be incorporated into the MCU, but the threequel is going to be R-Rated so those links may be tenuous at best.

Free Guy arrives in theaters this Friday!

Original idea? Maybe, but I immediately thought of "Ready Player One", and even to a lesser degree "Wreck It Ralph" when I first heard abut this movie. I'm sure and agree there are distinct differences with each, but as for an original idea, I'm not sure any really exist right now.

@Mugens - I think original idea means its that its not based on any existing property. It has a similar setting to Ready Player One and Wreck it Ralph but its structure and story may have a different outcome.

Similarly I wouldn't call Lego Movie 1 or 2 a rip off of Toy Story franchise despite both have a similar toy setting.

Makes sense! It’s almost a fully original Idea with no franchise IP.

It’s awesome to see a production of a new idea and not just a reboot, sequel, prequel or reimagining of a concept.
