GOTG VOL. 2's Sylvester Stallone To Star In And Produce New Superhero Drama SAMARITAN

Award-winning actor Sylvester Stallone (GOTG Vol. 2) is working with MGM to develop a new superhero drama, which he is also set to star in. Check out the early details for Samaritan after the jump...

Sylvester Stallone got his first taste of the superhero genre when he played Stakar Ogord in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. Now, the award-winning actor is ready to star in his own superhero movie.

MGM is developing the superhero drama Samaritan after acquiring the script from Bragi F. Schut (Escape Room). Stallone is attached to star and produce through his Balboa Productions, which launched in May.

Although Samaritan is a fictional character from Kurt Busiek's Astro City comic book series, MGM's film appears to be completely unrelated and shares only the name. Plot details are understandably light at this point, but the movie reportedly "centers on a boy learning that a missing superhero, who vanished 20 years earlier after a battle, may still be alive." Presumably, Stallone will be playing that missing superhero.

According to Deadline, Samaritan has been described as a "dark, fresh take on the superhero genre."

While superhero movies have been all the rage in Hollywood for quite a while now, the genre is largely dominated by blockbusters based on existing IP. The prospect of an original superhero idea is an intriguing one, though it could be hard to sell to audiences so enamored with existing comic book characters.

No director has been attached and Samaritan does not yet have a release date. What do you think of the idea of Sylvester Stallone starring in this original superhero drama?

Who thinks Stallone should get Zack Snyder to direct?

@DVonShakari - I think it might agree on that (and not just because of the ''dark, fresh take on the superhero genre'')

@MalseMarcel - I think he'd do better directing material that isn't as well known and iconic.

@DVonShakari - Stallone's a better director than Snyder. Stallone gives his characters actual personality and relatability. Snyder should have stuck to music videos, all the symbolism and iconographic visuals he excels at lose their impact when all the characters are either cardboard or stuffed full of unearned self-importance. I can't even count how many visually dazzling Snyder scenes are wasted on characters that the audience is just *expected* to care about despite the fact that they've been given no reason for doing so.

I weep for anyone who watches the Oscars for the Marvel vs DC rivalry. Get a life, people. Although if you're going to harass people online for their fandom (whether comics, sports, sci-fi franchises, music, etc), I guess that's sightly better than harassing people over their gender, skin color, ethnicity, religion, native language, or partner preference.

“If Willis can do it, I can too,” Stallone is quoted as having said on a pre-Oscar show that only occurred in the confines of my head

Cool. Love Sylvester!

Still, Stallone is the retired Bruce Wayne in an R rated detective-Bat movie we'll never get to see...
Dylan O'Brian is the Peter Parker webhead we'll never get to see...
MacKenzie Porter is... the Supergirl we'll never get to see...
Chuckling a lot today!

@DBLACK - that's funny, Stallone has ALWAYS been my number one choice for a Dark Knight Returns film. Cool to finally hear someone else think that he'd nail it! Also, dream cast for older TDKR Joker is obviously Willem Dafoe, Bruce Willis for "reformed" TDKR Harvey Dent, Clint Eastwood for retiring Commissioner Jim Gordon, Michelle Pfeiffer for older Catwoman (no one can top that performance in my mind!)

@blitzburgh - tho I do genuinely LOVE Tom Holland in the role, even back like when they were first casting for the "Amazing" first reboot, I really liked the idea of the one kid from Shameless as a Peter Parker/Spiderman. Not the kid who's wound up being the Joker knockoff on Gotham, the one who plays the character named Lip. but I gave up on Shameless like 3-4 years ago now.

@xfan320 - is Superman not also in The Dark Knight Returns? I mean I've never read the actual comic, but have heard bits and pieces over the years... even if he's not a main figure, but he's at least part of the story, right?
I do like some of your other choices though, particularly Dafoe as Joker. However if they were finally genuinely to do a straight up live action adaptation, I'm of the camp that wants Keaton back in the cowl.
