Even though director James Mangold recently debunked them, rumours and theories that Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny will end with some sort of passing of the torch continue doing the rounds online. For many, that's only fuelling their outrage at a movie they have deemed "too woke" simply because it introduces Phoebe Waller-Bridge's Helena, Indy's goddaughter.

While there was a time Lucasfilm considered casting a new actor as Indiana Jones (Guardians of the Galaxy star Chris Pratt was eyed for the role), a very vocal backlash put an end to that.

Even so, many fans remain convinced The Dial of Destiny will conclude with the iconic adventurer's death, leaving Helena to take over his gig in what would then become a female-led action franchise. During a recent interview (shared via ActioNewz.com), Harrison Ford was asked if he's passing the baton to Waller-Bridge, and his response was a blunt one.

"No, I’m just telling a story," the legendary actor says in the video below. "Telling a story. You’ll see. You’ll see. I hope you like it."

This lines up with recent comments from Mangold who took to Twitter to say, "One more time. No one is 'taking over' or replacing Indy or donning his hat nor is he being 'erased' [through] some contrivance - and he never was, not not in any cut or script - but trolls will troll - that’s how they get their clicks."

With Mangold at the helm, we've been anticipating Indiana Jones 5 being something special, and all signs point to it eventually ranking among 2023's best movies. Ford's long-awaited return as the iconic adventurer is incredibly exciting, especially as we'll be following him both in the late 1960s and as a younger man. Will we say a permanent goodbye to Indy here? It seems likely.

Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny is set to be released in theaters on June 30, 2023.

Surely there is something better to do.

Look, I don't care what any of the actors, directors, writers, producers, or anyone else associated with this film say. I've watched this film in my head already and I know I KNOW that it's going to be a bunch of non-stop woke bullshit from beginning to end. Why else would they have it take place in 1969? Hello? 69?!?

Most likely Indy's "goddaughter" will end up being a gender-swapped version of Indy from an alternate timeline who will swap places with him at the end of the movie via the inter-dimensional gateway MacGuffin that the Apollo astronauts discover on the moon, allowing her to continue on as Indy in our universe. And the stinger? She's actually trans. Obviously. I see it all coming from a mile away.

The trailer for this did not garner excitement from me

@ForceofWakanda - Same. But I'll watch it, even if only when it's out on D+.

In all of these pushback comments not a single one has mentioned anything about Indy getting killed off…The most recent rumor was that old Indy would sacrifice himself to save young Indy and his goddaughter or whoever the character ends up being…Which kind of indirectly confirms it is suppose…Simply by them being so open to counter the other stuff that’s floating around and keeping their mouths shut when it comes to this particular angle…

I’d actually be fine with the approach if that’s what indeed will happen…It would preserve the history of the franchise but also let Ford bow out…

As for continuing with building a franchise around the goddaughter character that’s just whatever…I probably wouldn’t watch them but who am to tell others to to pass on them as well…If they find an audience then have at it as long as Indy is treated right in this movie…

What would be great would be some other movies with a younger stand in actor, with the de-aging tech they used for this movie, that follows Indy on various adventures…They could even have Ford bookend the damn things like they originally did with the Young Indy show…

I hope Indy rides off into the sunset and enjoys his 'retirement'. I don't want him to die and I don't want him replaced or passing the hat and whip to anyone else. Let him bow out the legend that he is.

Having said that, if they want to do a Disney+ spin off show following the adventures of an adult Shortround with Ke Huy Quan reprising the role then I'm down for that.

Ford seemed out of it. He probably has no idea what's going on.

Indy's wardrobe could really use some jewelry. For a treasure hunter, this guy should be decked out a little. Give him a necklace or at least some ice on that bare wrist.

@AnthonyVonGeek - That actually looks like an aged-up Scott Bakula when you could just use a current picture of Ford.

After 3 epic movies & one awful crapper......

All I want to see is this next movie ending with Indy turning into the Red Hulk & destroying the studio to the Scorpions playing Rock You Like a Hurricane.

Make it so!

Only passing of the torch I want is with Short Round.

Can have him show up in the WWII opening of this movie, and then they can do a lot of stories in the late 1940s and 1950s with a young adult Short Round.

Reporter - "Are you passing the baton?"
Harrison - "No, I am LITERALLY not passing the baton!"

I don't buy it.
Kennedy only fks things up so I'm sure it's a pile of garbage anyway.

I'd love to be wrong, but I wouldn't bet money on it being any good.

AT BEST, it will be average to okay.
