MAD MAX Spinoff FURIOSA Pushed To Summer 2024; Slated To Begin Filming In Australia Next Year

While initially slated for 2023, Warner Bros. has decided to move back George Miller's upcoming Mad Max spinoff to Summer 2024. Filming has also been confirmed to begin at the start of next year.

Warner Bros. has announced today that George Miller's hotly-awaited Mad Max spinoff, Furiosa, will now open in theaters worldwide on May 24, 2024. The movie was originally scheduled for June 23, 2023.

The long-awaited Fury Road prequel, penned by Miller and Nick Lathouris, will star Primetime Emmy-nominee Anya Taylor-Joy (The Queen's GambitThe New Mutants) in the title role, with an A-list supporting cast consisting of Chris Hemsworth (Thor: Love and ThunderAvengers: Endgame) and Primetime Emmy-winner Yahya Abdul-Mateen II (Aquaman and the Lost KingdomWatchmen).

Pre-production is expected to begin at the end of this year in New South Wales, with principal photography set to start sometime early next year. The ambitious project will be Australia's largest production ever, and will reportedly infuse at least $350 million AUD into the local economy and create approximately 850 jobs for locals.

WB has also dated New Line's Salem's Lot, an upcoming adaptation of the Stephen King horror novel of the same name, for September 9, 2022.

In other news, while Furiosa will film in Australia, Netflix and AGBO recently decided to move the production of their untitled Extraction sequel, which was scripted by Joe Russo and will be produced by the Russo Brothers, out of the Australian continent due to potential COVID and shut down concerns. The Chris Hemsworth-starrer will now film in Prague, the capital city of the Czech Republic.

Pre-production is already underway, and it seems as though Hemsworth will jump into filming the Sam Hargrave-directed actioner before reporting back to his home country of Australia in November or December for Furiosa

I’m mildly excited for this but seems like such an unnecessary movie.

Then again, George Miller and Anya ..

@Cbmfilmjunkie - Fury Road was hardly ‘necessary’ (not sure what movies consist as necessary generally) and turned out to be one of the best blockbusters in recent memory

I gotta feeling Hemsworth is the villain. Keeping with the Aussie villains.

Still wish we got that anime

Part of me wants this because I loved Fury Road but then at the same time I can’t help but wondering why this after so long.

@BlackBeltJones - They're making him a star. DC, Matrix, Mad Max, watch him be in Fantastic Beasts lmao.

Well, [frick], he actually would fit for Kingsley Shacklebolt... if only he were british

Joy is one hell of an actress. Definitely has me intrigued about her take on the character.

Will George Miller even be alive when this comes out? Jeeeez. I doubt we’ll see the other sequel he wanted to make.

Fury Road had a long production too, so it makes sense. Just a bummer it's so far away :(
Taylor-Joy, Miller and Yahya all on a Mad Max project sounds obscenely exciting though
