Oldboy Remake Details Emerge, New Version To Be Even "Darker" Than The Original?

Producer Roy Lee (no relation to the movie's director Spike) has let a few details about the upcoming remake of the Korean flick slip through including shoot dates and additions to the original story..

Producer Roy Lee sat down with Shocktillyoudrop to talk about Spike Lee's planned remake of Park Chan Wook's Oldboy, which is itself based on a Manga of the same name. It sounds as if this movie will indeed be more of a remake than another adaptation of the comic as Lee says that although there will be some changes both films will be very similar. He also says that people might find this version's ending "a bit darker" than the original. How that is even possible I don't know but I'm certainly curious as to what is in store..

“We are planning to shoot ‘Old Boy’ in March and that should start pre-production in late January,” he said. “This is a brand new script by Mark Protosevich. It is very similar to the film, but Protosevich has added new elements that will throw off the audience who have seen the original movie because there are new characters and new situations that present themselves in a way that change the story but eventually go in the same direction. The ending will be something audiences–especially fans of the original movie–will be very happy with. Some may consider it a bit darker.” He added that “there’s going to be a different interpretation of the hallway scene that is hopefully going to be Spike’s signature moment in the movie that he wants to show in a way that has never been seen in an action movie.”

Joe (Oh Dae-Su in the original) will be played by Josh Brolin. No other cast members have been locked in but both Colin Firth and Christian Bale have been linked to the part of the lead villain. Updates as we have em.

As much as a think the original is perfect, I'm glad to hear that he's making a few changes to keep those of us that have seen it guessing.

I look forward to this actually,. I'm hoping the new elements are actually taken from the original manga. Also this always seemed like a twitsed "Count of Monte Crtisto" to me.

Why do people go on about "the original"? The original was already based on a source material and changed COUNTLESS things, most notably, of course, the fact that suddenly nobody was japanese.

What disappoints me here is that it sounds like it'll stick closer to the Korean movie and not the manga as I actually expected...that kinda sucks.

Sounds interesting, and its cool they're adding some new things to story instead a straight up remake,so we'll see what happens.
