Spike Lee Confirmed To Direct Oldboy Remake

Mandate Pictures have issued a press release confirming the Do The Right Thing director will indeed helm their remake of the Korean original(itself based on the Manga of the same name), Oldboy..

It was rumored already last week, but I think many thought it seemed a bit far fetched. Well, after a 3 year hiatus Spike Lee will indeed helm the American remake of the Chan-Wook Park classic.

Los Angeles (July 11, 2011) – Mandate Pictures announced today that Spike Lee (Inside Man) will direct OLDBOY, a remake of the highly-acclaimed South Korean film. Mark Protosevich has adapted the screenplay and will co-produce. Roy Lee and Doug Davison (The Departed, The Grudge) will produce. The film is a Vertigo Entertainment/40 Acres & A Mule Production. Mandate President Nathan Kahane will executive produce.

“It’s a great honor to put this special project into the hands of such a gifted writer and iconic director,” said Kahane.

OLDBOY tells the story of a man who is kidnapped and imprisoned on his daughter’s birthday. For fifteen years, he is held captive, and, upon his release, must begin his journey to find the reason for his imprisonment. He soon finds out that his kidnapper has plans for him more tortuous than his solitary confinement. The original film, released in 2003, directed by Chan-wook Park won the Grand Prize Jury Award at the 2004 Cannes Film Festival.

Spike Lee and Mark Protosevich are represented by CAA. Dan Freedman, SVP of business affairs, negotiated the deals for Mandate.

I know many of you are against this remake, and in the hands of a lesser director I would be too. But I just can't not be excited at the prospect of this. It remains to be seen if the original's more controversial and outright twisted elements will be toned down or removed altogether but I look forward to finding out one way or the other.

they not remaking the South Korean film but making the movie based on "Oldboy" Japanese manga. not saying the South Korean version of "Oldboy" is bad.

anyway Spike Lee did a quick interview with Grace Randolph and he said he loves Marvel and he found DC comic corny lol :P

Doesn't matter if it' based on the manga or the movie. Somethings masterpieces need to be left alone...

@Jazz.."Mandate Pictures announced today that Spike Lee (Inside Man) will direct OLDBOY, a remake of the highly-acclaimed South Korean film."

Now maybe they will take more elements from the Manga or at least go back and take a look at it..I dunno, but this is a remake.

@ROR I hope they keep it true and don't take out the "outright twisted elements" you mentioned. That would ruin the movie. It will be very interesting to see this in the more then capable hands of Spike Lee.

this is going to be interesting i tell you that. The original south korean movie is adaptation of a japanese comic so i dont mind american version of it.
But i rather see the japanese version of it.

If they are going to get Will Smith in the starring role he seriously has to make himself look like a common man and not like a muscled action star.

I would prefer Jackie Earle Haley myself too!

I lost some respect for Spike when he mouthed off about a white director making the movie about Mohamed Ali. I think he was pissed he got the snub on making that film...

the original is AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!

but spike lee directing a remake... meh...
jazzman
jazzman - 7/11/2011, 1:31 PM
@McGribble

actually that was untrue

Spike Lee never said anything about a white director shouldnt do "Ali". he even confirmed this long time ago

"You were critical of the decision to let a white director (Michael Mann) helm Ali. How would you have done things differently? Thomas Lyons

First of all I didn't say anything about Michael Mann being a white director. I just wanted to direct the film and I didn't get the chance to do it. Simple as that. It doesn't matter what I would've done differently. And you know, the film speaks for itself.

Spike, please make a Luke Cage or Black Panther film
John Singleton is taking too long

ehhh. Not really a fan of spike.. Some of his stuff is OK but, yeah.. I don't like the idea of him getting behind the camera for Oldboy. Tarantino would have been a better bet. Or even Guy Ritchie.

John Singleton should not do Black Panther or Luke Cage period.

This is a change in the type of movie Spike Lee directs. That being said he could either totally blow this the way Ang Lee did to Hulk or with the passion that he puts into his film making he could turn this into something better than either the manga or South Korean version.

The best of luck to you, Spike!

@MarvelWeiner

wat u talking we might aswell say Chris Nolan only like using white actors in his movies.

Spike Lee casted white actors, latino, etc in his movies.
look how many times he worked with John Turturro. the guy always work with Spike Lee.

geez 25th Hour and Summer of Sam was mostly white actors in that movie and it was directed by Spike Lee.

@MarvelWeiner-

What wrong with him only casting black actors? Filmmakers have been casting only white actors for decades. And because he's a black director you assume this will be an "urban" take on the story? C'mon, son.

[frick] this remake... Oldboy is perfect and a piece of art, don't need an english spoken version, just like "Let the right one in"... go read some subtitles and leave Oldboy alone. Boycott this kind of Hollywood mindless attitude that turns great movies into shit.

Although it may not be pc to dislike Spike Lee, I'll go ahead and say it... He's a loudmouth and a racist. Never liked his cocky attitude and "know it all" demeanor, Sure, he made a couple controversial films. Not good mind you, but controversial. Martin Luther King jr is a hero to me. Malcom X, despite his somewhat racist ideology is someone I greatly admire. Spike Lee is not. . He criticized Clint Eastwood for not having black people in Flags of Our Fathers. Clear example of him being an instigator and an agitator. Leave it up to him and he'll set back years of hard won progress we've made in eliminating racism. Hey Spike, "do the right thing" and quit making movies. Dickbag. No offense @Jazzman. That's my opinion of him.

He's not a racist, he's just very opinionated and maybe a little, yes, confrontational. GOOD. As long as he keeps making excellent movies(controversial not good my ass) like Do The Right Thing, Mo Better Blues, Summer Of Sam, Inside man and 25th hour to name just a few who cares if he pisses of Clint frackin Eastwood?

I hope this tanks just like Let Me In did. Why remake a masterpiece that the general population never even heard of? It doesn't even make sense from a business stand point.

Fingers crossed that the overwhelmingly negative backlash changes the studios mind and this doesn't get made.

I thought all those movies were crap, but like I said, that's my opinion. It's people like him, through their witch-hunt like mentality towards racism that in fact only perpetuate the problem. Now, this article is about him re-making oldboy so pardon my divergence from the topic, but far too often he's gone on camera finger pointing at other directors for how they're not putting enough black people in their films or how they're catering to a white film audience. When he attacked Clint he went too far. The worst movie Clint ever made (Gran torino...lol) is better than the BEST movie Spike ever made. I personally would like to see racism go away. Of course it won't go away by ignoring it, but reversing it is not the solution either. I've tried to sit through several of Spikes crappy films and never made it more than half way. NEVER AGAIN. Thanks, but you can have my share.

superpooper - 7/11/2011, 4:58 PM
Now as far as remaking Oldboy, what, does he not have any ideas of his own? What's wrong with Oldboy that he has to remake it? I'm not the only one tired of remakes, especially when all they're doing is putting in American actors and American dialogue. Oldboy was an excellent movie, all the better thanks to the twist at the end, but the gag is done! Does he think he's going to do it better? WE ALL KNOW HOW IT ENDS SPIKE. Leave it.
jazzman
jazzman - 7/12/2011, 8:47 AM
@superpooper

the reason why hollywood do remakes of foreign films is because all of people who go to cinema dont like reading subtitle. its very sad but its true thats why they like doing remakes blame the general public for that.

@MrEko

i remember dwayne mcduffie saying that it believe the video of his interview is on youtube.

Cool, I'm actually looking forward to Lee's take on this, but I doubt it would be any good as the original, but I could be wrong.
