Chris Hemsworth is set to surface in a high-stakes thriller for Amazon MGM Studios with the upcoming feature Subversion, described as a “Die Hard on a submarine” action flick. Directed by Patrick Vollrath (7500), the film is scheduled to begin production this fall in Hemsworth’s native Australia.
Written by Andrew Ferguson, whose screenplays have landed on the Black List four times, Subversion centers on a disgraced former naval commander who is blackmailed by a cartel-like group into piloting a submarine packed with illegal cargo through international waters. Hemsworth’s character soon finds himself playing a lethal game of deception, dodging maritime blockades and battling threats from both inside and outside the vessel.
Vollrath is no stranger to contained thrillers. His directorial debut, 7500, starred Joseph Gordon-Levitt as a pilot trapped in the cockpit during a hijacking. The filmmaker also earned an Oscar nomination in 2016 for his live-action short film Everything Will Be Okay. He is repped by Gotham Group and Davis Law Group.
Lorenzo di Bonaventura is producing the film through his di Bonaventura Pictures banner, continuing his track record of big-budget action fare. Amazon MGM is eyeing a theatrical release, banking on Hemsworth’s global star power and the intense, high-concept premise.
This marks another collaboration between Hemsworth and the studio. He is also leading Crime 101, an ensemble crime thriller with Halle Berry, Mark Ruffalo, Barry Keoghan, and Monica Barbaro, also due for a 2026 theatrical rollout. The actor is represented by CAA and Greenberg Glusker and will next appear in Marvel’s Avengers: Doomsday.
With Subversion, Hemsworth seems poised to dive deep into a gritty, claustrophobic thriller that could redefine his post-Thor career arc. The film promises tension, tactical warfare, and a desperate hero navigating murky moral waters — all from the confines of a steel-plated submarine.
Chris Hemsworth hasn’t exactly taken a break since his run as Thor began winding down. In 2024, he took a sharp turn from his usual heroic persona, playing the ruthless Warlord Dementus in Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga. The film debuted at Cannes, where Hemsworth’s gritty transformation drew attention for showcasing a darker, more complex side of his acting range. Around the same time, he returned as Tyler Rake in Extraction 2, the follow-up to Netflix’s surprise hit. With its intense stunt work and global appeal, the sequel helped reinforce Hemsworth’s standing as a bona fide action star.
On the horizon, Hemsworth is set to appear in Marvel’s Avengers: Doomsday, currently scheduled for release in 2026. He’s also part of the ensemble cast for Amazon MGM’s Crime 101, joining forces with Halle Berry and Mark Ruffalo in a thriller based on the Don Winslow novella. With each new role, Hemsworth continues to push into deeper, more grounded territory.
