TOP GUN: MAVERICK Now Tom Cruise's Biggest Film Ever With $800M+ WW; Tops DOCTOR STRANGE For #1 Domestic Spot

Top Gun: Maverick's box office reign continues, and as it jets past $800M worldwide, it's now become Tom Cruise's biggest blockbuster ever. Plus, it's also now the biggest domestic hit of the year.

The celebration continues for Paramount and Skydance's Top Gun: Maverick, as the sequel has now grossed over $806.4 million worldwide ($422.2M domestic; $384.2M foreign). It's also become the biggest hit of Tom Cruise's iconic career, soaring past Christopher McQuarrie's Mission: Impossible - Fallout, which earned $791.1 million globally back in 2018.

It's an absolutely incredible accomplishment considering the actor has been delivering hit after hit for over forty years, and hasn't ventured into anything involving superheroes, dinosaurs, or intergalactic space wars.

Plus, no China or Russia release makes this win even sweeter.

The Joseph Kosinski-directed blockbuster is also now the biggest film of the year domestically, lapping Marvel Studios' Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness at the U.S. box office. It's actually only the second film to cross the $400 million mark since the start of the pandemic, behind Sony and Marvel Studios' Spider-Man: No Way Home last December.

It has also crossed Warner Bros.' The Batman ($770.3M) to become the second-highest-grossing film of the year globally, and has its sights set on the Sam Raimi-directed multiversal superhero adventure, which currently stands in first place with an approximate $935.2 million.

Looking ahead, box office pundits are expecting an extremely lucrative Father's Day weekend for Cruise's latest blockbuster, likely surpassing $450 million domestic by Monday, and there is an extremely strong possibility the film will ultimately finish well north of $500 million before all is said and done. Worldwide, it's seeming increasingly likely Top Gun: Maverick will top $1 billion by the end of its 120-day theatrical window.

With a production budget of $172.5 million and $150 million in print and advertising, the film's reported break-even number was approximately $410 million, and since it's already crossed that figure, everything from now until the end of the summer is pretty much all profit. That's great news for Cruise, who's expected to walk away with an astronomical nine-figure payday, the biggest for any actor ever.

Plus, Paramount has released Miles Teller's full "Great Balls of Fire" performance:

Check out our exclusive interviews with director Joseph Kosinski and actor Glen Powell (Hangman) below:

In our review, we said, "Top Gun: Maverick is the must-see cinematic experience of the year! Packed with jaw-dropping aerial sequences, thrilling edge-of-your-seat moments, genuine heart, epic romance, huge stakes, and one of the absolute best performances of Tom Cruise's legendary career, this is the theatrical experience you've been waiting for."

Tom Cruise headlines the feature as Captain Pete "Maverick" Mitchell, with original co-star Val Kilmer returning as Admiral Tom "Iceman" Kazansky. The iconic pair are joined by an all-star supporting cast consisting of Jennifer Connelly as Penny Benjamin, Miles Teller as Lt. Bradley "Rooster" Bradshaw, Jon Hamm as Vice Admiral Cyclone, Glen Powell as Hangman, Lewis Pullman as Bob, Ed Harris as Rear Admiral, Monica Barbaro as Phoenix, Charles Parnell as Rear Admiral Warlock, Danny Ramirez as Fanboy, Manny Jacinto as Fritz, Bashir Salahuddin as Coleman, Jay Ellis as Payback, Jake Picking in an undisclosed role, Raymond Lee in an undisclosed role, Lyliana Wray as Amelia Benjamin, Jean Louisa Kelly as Carole Bradshaw, Greg Davis as Coyote, and Bob Stephenson in an undisclosed role.

Top Gun: Maverick is now play in theaters worldwide!

After more than thirty years of service as one of the Navy’s top aviators, Pete “Maverick” Mitchell (Tom Cruise) is where he belongs, pushing the envelope as a courageous test pilot and dodging the advancement in rank that would ground him. When he finds himself training a detachment of TOPGUN graduates for a specialized mission the likes of which no living pilot has ever seen, Maverick encounters Lt. Bradley Bradshaw (Miles Teller), call sign: “Rooster,” the son of Maverick’s late friend and Radar Intercept Officer Lt. Nick Bradshaw, aka “Goose.”

Facing an uncertain future and confronting the ghosts of his past, Maverick is drawn into a confrontation with his own deepest fears, culminating in a mission that demands the ultimate sacrifice from those who will be chosen to fly it.

I have said all there is to say about how incredible this film is. But this should send a message to Hollywood. You don't have to pander to foreign governments. You don't have to have a 20/30 something as a lead. And as much as I love them, You don't have to make it a comic book movie. You don't have to hamfist political messages. You don't have to scold your audience. You don't have to over rely on CG. All you have to do is have a great story, great writing, great actors, and you can have this same success.

Still don't think it'll be a billi with both Dominion and Lightyear playing at the same time.

@MCUKnight11

Yes, Top Gun will still be playing late into the summer with the amount of money it’s making. It will outpace JW probably next weekend.

Lightyear also looks like it’s going to underwhelm opening weekend but it’s early.

@regularmovieguy - I hope it doesn't underwhelm. Took my Mom to see it as a birthday present yesterday and though it was really cool. I liked Maverick as much as anyone else,but I have to say I am surprised at how well it's doing. Might be biggest box office surprise since Jumanji: welcome to the jungle.

That really puts Marvel’s success into perspective. 800 million is the biggest hit of The Last Movie Star’s career — and it’s not like he hasn’t made a ton of popcorn tentpoles over the years — and that’s a middish-tier MCU film.

Definitely deserved though. Never been a big fan of his and I thought the original aged horrendously, and I really enjoyed it. In a weird way it reminded me of Fury Road in that it managed to bring heart and fresh energy to the type of film you’ve already seen 100 times before.

@dmac3232 -
The hype of Doctor Strange 2 led to a strong opening weekend, but the quality caused it to fall rapidly.

Comparatively the hype for Top Gun 2 was there, but it was not massively noteworthy - but the word of mouth led to insane levels of viewing once people knew how amazing the movie was.

This is why Top Gun 2 passed Doctor Strange 2. Quality beats hype & bait&switch marketting.

@Scarilian - my opinion of strange 2, is boring until it wasn’t. So not only was it divisive between viewers. It was divisive to me as an individual lol. But top Gun 2! What a movie! Man did it feel simple and formulaic and by the beats and STILL WAS SO MUCH FUN!!! I mean that and I won’t take it back, it’s not a complicated film… and is so much better for it. The most fun I’ve had in theaters since endgame (which was amid marital problems, so top gun 2 wins but only because of that, I really do love endgame… but when your wife hates you, nothing is fun)

@tmp3 - all great movies! I haven't seen Fourth of July, but I love the rest. Eyes Wide Shut blew me away. I had no idea what it'd be about but was not disappointed. same with Risky biz. it's not the typical John Hughes 80s teen comedy I thought it'd be
