Sony Pictures announced that a follow-up to Ghostbusters: Afterlife was in development during CinemaCon earlier this year, and the studio has now set an official release date.

Deadline (via Fear HG) reports that the untitled sequel will hit theaters on December 20, 2023, and after moving the spooky adventures to a more rural setting for Afterlife, we'll be returning to the franchise's more familiar location of New York City.

Main cast members Carrie Coon (Callie Spengler) Finn Wolfhard (Trevor), Mckenna Grace (Phoebe), and Paul Rudd (Gary Grooberson) are expected to return, but it's not clear if Ghostbusters OGs Bill Murray and Dan Aykroyd will also reprise their roles - although it has been confirmed that Ernie Hudson will be back.

In Afterlife's post-credits scene, we saw Winston return to the team's old firehouse headquarters, where the refurbished ECTO-1 was waiting. Though nothing has been confirmed just yet, the implication was that Zeddemore was planning to train a new group of spook-hunters.

Director Jason Reitman told CinemaCon attendees that “the character of Winston Zeddemore and Zeddemore Industries figure strongly into the future of Ghostbusters.”

The last film had its share of detractors, but the majority of fans seemed to embrace the nostalgia-heavy tale, and it was a solid box office success (you can check out our review here).
