BOX OFFICE: Disney's BIG HERO 6 Will Edge Out Chris Nolan's INTERSTELLAR

Friday belongs to Christopher Nolan's Interstellar, but the weekend belongs to Disney's superhero film, Big Hero 6. According to Deadline, Interstellar will end up grossing $16.5M to $18M on Friday and Big Hero 6 will gross $16M. That puts Nolan's latest film on course for a $50-$52M weekend. While Disney's latest animated feature should receive a healthy bounce on Saturday from families, which pushes its estimated total to $54-$56M. It's a close race! It may come down to word-of-mouth. If that's the case, Disney's Big Hero 6 will still come out on top. Audiences gave the animated feature an 'A' CinemaScore, while Nolan's sci-fi epic only received a 'B+' CinemaScore.

Fun Fact: If these numbers hold up, Interstellar will be the first Christopher Nolan film in 12 years to not open in first place. Last time that happened was 2002's Insomnia.

With all the heart and humor audiences expect from Walt Disney Animation Studios, “Big Hero 6” is an action-packed comedy-adventure about robotics prodigy Hiro Hamada, who learns to harness his genius—thanks to his brilliant brother Tadashi and their like-minded friends: adrenaline junkie Go Go Tamago, neatnik Wasabi, chemistry whiz Honey Lemon and fanboy Fred. When a devastating turn of events catapults them into the midst of a dangerous plot unfolding in the streets of San Fransokyo, Hiro turns to his closest companion—a robot named Baymax—and transforms the group into a band of high-tech heroes determined to solve the mystery. Inspired by the Marvel comics of the same name, and featuring comic-book style action, “Big Hero 6” is directed by Don Hall (“Winnie the Pooh”) and Chris Williams (“Bolt”), and produced by Roy Conli (“Tangled”). The film hits theaters in 3D on November 7, 2014. The film hits theaters in 3D on November 7, 2014.

@nailbiter111 Thoughts on Interstellar?

Interstellar drops the ball in the 3rd act BIG TIME. Theater was absolutely silent when the film ended. What a fracking clusterfrak.

@nailbiter111 Sorta what @Luminus said.

Interstellar is a must-see in IMAX 70MM, so much beautyy. I have some major issues with that 3rd act and a certain somebody showing up which gave the film something it really didn't need. Also, Nolan overcompensates the emotional aspect due to his rep of being cold (you tried Nolan, but you get no tears from me) and there's a lot of EXPLAIN SCIENCE FOR 5 MINUTES exposition that is just hard to follow sometimes. I admire the ambition though; he just throws everything in that script even if it doesn't stick. I'm not even sure it's a great film like MEMENTO or THE DARK KNIGHT, but it's one bold mother[frick]er.

Not surprising considering Interstellar is just short of 3 hours long while Big Hero 6 is just a little over the average 1 hour 40 min mark. Doesn't take a genius to work out you'll get twice as much screenings of one film over the other in a day hence more box office, especially for two popular films on their debuts.

Interstellar by the way was one helluva outstanding science fiction film, genuine scifi, not the pretentious, franchise contriving bollocks like Prometheus or the dumb action comedy shit Paramount has regressed Star Trek into for the masses. This, Nightcrawler and Fury have made my month at the cinema a great one after a summer load of shit.

If one were honest about Nolan, a LOT of his "third acts" fall apart...Though I can't speak to 'Intrerstellar' until I see it tomorrow.

Living in Barcelona now so I either have to watch these in Spanish or with humonguos subtitles for the spaniards which usually ruins the big epic shots which I imagine Intersteller will have many of. Here's hoping for little dialogue.

@nailbiter111 make sure to pee twice before it starts, even if you have to force it the second time.

Luminus' comment reminds of the story of Rock Hudson walking out on 2001: A Space Odyssey while saying "What the f*ck did I just watch!?"

I gotta say I loved it, and I think everyone should go see it, it is a very different Nolan movie, but I actually loved the third act. can't really say much without spoiling, but it's one great film he made, one spectacular experience

It's not Nolan's best work, but I believe it will be a classic down the line, for me the best movie of the year so far

@AXE It's a divisive film for sure. Great conversation talk for the rest of the year!

@nailbiter111 that's my advice for everything.

Told you guys Interstellar was a cluster[frick]. Word of advise, if you go see Interstellar go see it in:

1. 2D, because you'll end up saving a good amount of money
2. The plot-holes in Interstellar don't require 3D.

Definitely, as a science geek I might be biased, just seeing Kip Thorne's theories visualized was mouth wateringly beautifull for me, it's a very different film Nolan made.

Most vos (version original) films are on IMAX here and the screen in Barcelona is ginormous so massive subtitles. I think the IMAX screen here is much bigger than the one we have in San Fran. Plus the letters also just seem bigger here. Bolder lettering.

@AXE It's not my favorite Nolan film, but it's easily his most ambitious one, hence the divisiveness.

Interstellar was amazing. Im not an animated movie fan so I won't be seeing Big Hero 6. My advice is if you're looking for a fun movie go for BH6 and if you're looking to be awe-struck watch Interstellar.
Knightrider

Would have expected this. Adults will watch Interstellar, while Big Hero 6 will have Parents + Kids, so has a wider market coming in, the fact it was even close is amazing

Interstellar is like Mantinum, it tries to hard to be smart but ends up being completely retarded.

I agree, jt's a very bold movie, as directorial effort goes, my fav. film of his is still Memento, however, this is unlike anything I've seen done before in recent years, so just for the sheer freshness, I appreciate it big time.

Did you know that Spielberg was attached to direct it before Nolan did? Could've been a very different movie

Honestly the movie was pretty good, until the third act when it went full retard.
