Fourth Starship Troopers Installment Will be Animated

The next installment in the Starship Troopers franchise will be an animated feature, coming off the heels of two less than favorable direct-to-DVD sequels. Starship Troopers: Invasion will release next summer.

After the original film released in 1997, and ultimately becoming a cult-favorite of sorts, Sony Pictures released two direct-to-DVD sequels that actually did fairly well. There has been talk of a fourth film in the series for some time and now we have confirmation of that. This installment, however, will be taking a different route and be an animated feature.

Starship Troopers: Invasion is currently in production and on track for a Summer 2012 release. Shinji Aramaki (Appleseed, Halo Legend) is on board to direct the film, with Casper Van Dien producing (possibly returning to voice Johnny Rico as well) with script-writer Ed Neumeier, who penned the previous three films. We also have a plot summary to go along with the promo art (pictured):

A distant Federation outpost Fort Casey comes under attack by bugs. The team on the fast attack ship Alesia is assigned to help the Starship John A. Warden stationed in Fort Casey evacuate along with the survivors and bring military intelligence safely back to Earth. Carl Jenkins, now ministry of Paranormal Warfare, takes the starship on a clandestine mission before its rendezvous with the Alesia and goes missing in the nebula. Now, the battle-hardened troopers are charged with a rescue mission that may lead to a much more sinister consequence than they ever could have imagined....

This is not the first time the franchise has received the animation treatment. In 1999, the Roughnecks series hit the small screen for 12 episodes.

I will admit that I am a bit of a fan of the first film. Sure, it is cheesy, often walking the line of silliness, but it is a fun and entertaining sci-fi film. But, having watched the two DVD sequels, the franchise went down hill quite fast. Maybe going to animation may help things out a bit, but that won't save it if the story isn't captivating.

I own all of these movies. The second and third ones are the greatest films ever made in my opinion.

i didnt care for the second film and i never saw the third one, although the guy that played rico in the first one came back in #3 right? that sounds cool. I always wanted them to make a TV series, and that could have been animated. Also I never saw the Halo anime, but i did see Appleseed way back when, and although i didnt think much of the movie itself, the art style and visuals were really nice. Plus the futuristic style fits with the type of look that the same director would likely be looking to accomplish with Troopers.

The FIRST one is one of my top favorite movies, the SECOND one was so-so, the THIRSD one was was really BAD. I hope this one (as animated) goes back to the roots.

Loved the first movie, didn't mind the sequels for what they were, the animated series was great wish they would have continued it for a little while longer. Can't wait for this to come out.

I'd rather they didn't animate it, get off their back sides, make a proper starship troopers movie, not some terrible direct to dvd movies with a terrible budget.

The original was a classic, deserves more respect!

Roughnecks was amazing...it was the closest thing to a Starcraft animated series...they even presented the Third race (similar to Protoss). I think this is going to be an awesome movie...especially since it going to deal with Carl (whos a psychic spook).

Always thought it was funny that Rico made it with Dizzy in the first movie, seeing as how Dizzy was a dude in the book.

That aside, I really enjoyed the films(yes, all three), and can't wait for the next one.

I think the Roughnecks series was very good. At least with advances in CGI, the humans will look a little better though.
