INTERVIEW: Sinestro Speaks - Victor Garber of Green Lantern: First Flight

INTERVIEW: Sinestro Speaks - Victor Garber of Green Lantern: First Flight

From Academy Award blockbusters Titanic and Milk to Emmy-nominated performances in Alias and Will & Grace to Tony Award nods for a lengthy list of leading roles on Broadway, Victor Garber has achieved acting greatness regardless of the format. Now add animation to his list of successes.

In his animation debut, Garber masterfully crafts the voice for the calculating, villainous Sinestro in Green Lantern: First Flight, the fifth in the ongoing series of DC Universe animated original PG-13 movies. Warner Premiere, DC Comics and Warner Bros. Animation are set to release the all-new film – as a special edition 2-disc DVD, a Blu-Ray™ Hi-Def edition, as well as single disc DVD – on July 28, 2009, as distributed by Warner Home Video. The action-packed movie will also be available OnDemand and Pay-Per-View as well as available for download day and date, July 28, 2009.

Green Lantern: First Flight finds Hal Jordan recruited to join the Green Lantern Corps and placed under the supervision of respected senior Lantern Sinestro. The earthling soon discovers his mentor is actually the central figure in a secret conspiracy that threatens the philosophies, traditions and hierarchy of the entire Green Lantern Corps. Hal must quickly hone his newfound powers and combat the treasonous Lanterns within the ranks to maintain order in the universe.

The Canadian-born Garber first captured national attention in his 1973 big screen debut as Jesus in Godspell. Garber’s film credits include Titanic, Milk and Sleepless in Seattle, while his television career boasts six Emmy Award nominations spread over four different series, miniseries and movies. He earned a Saturn Award as Best Supporting Actor in a Television Series for his portrayal of Sydney Bristow’s mysterious father in Alias, and most recently was featured in Eli Stone and Justice.

The toast of Broadway for more than three decades, Garber has four Tony Award nominations for a career of performances that range from the Devil in Damn Yankees! to originating the role of John Wilkes Booth in Stephen Sondheim’s Assassins.

Though Garber has recorded books on tape and done some narration for television, Green Lantern: First Flight represents his first-ever voiceover performance for animation. It is an ear-catching performance that captures Sinestro’s true sinister nature. Garber stole a few moments during his New York-based Green Lantern: First Flight recording sessions to chat about his first-ever animation experience, his hero-posturing co-star, Simon Cowell’s attitude, and the directing tornado that is Andrea Romano.

For your enjoyment and, of course, liberal use in your journalistic endeavors, here is the first in a series of Q&A interviews with Green Lantern: First Flight voiceover cast members and filmmakers – this one featuring the voice of Sinestro, Victor Garber …

QUESTION: How did you settle on the voice of Sinestro?

VICTOR GARBER: The challenge of bringing this character to life was to find exactly the right tone. My tendency would be to make it a little too colorful, but Andrea (Romano) and Bruce (Timm) gave direction that was very specifically to modulate it and find the right tone. It was interesting because with animation, it’s all voice – at the recording stage of the process, you don’t even really know what it’s going to look like. But when I read the script, I had sort of an idea of the sound of Sinestro, because it was very specifically written – and very well written – so you could understand the sense of humor and irony in this character. I appreciated that.

QUESTION: How does Sinestro compare to other characters you've played before?

VICTOR GARBER: Having played the the ultimate villain as the Devil many years ago in Damn Yankees!, I found Sinestro was just kind of a modification of that character. The thing about villains is that they all think they're doing the right thing, and Sinestro believes that what he's doing is for the better, that it's going to improve the universe. The scariest part about a villain is that you know, at any cost, human life or super-powered life, they will do whatever it takes to achieve their goal. They believe in their cause, and Sinestro fits that mold.

QUESTION: Do you enjoy playing the villain?

VICTOR GARBER: I like to play any character that has dimension and complexity and if he happens to be a villain, great. If he happens to be heroic, great. I just like well-written roles.

QUESTION: What development did you put into the voice?

VICTOR GARBER: I actually read the script aloud a couple of times and sort of experimented with a certain qualities. In the script, it says – and maybe this was a bit misleading – but it refers to Sinestro as having a bit of a Simon Cowell attitude. I tried not to let that influence me too much, but Sinestro is sarcastic and he’s got a real edge. So I played with it, and once I got into the studio with Andrea, the voice really came out.

QUESTION: What was your impression of Sinestro’s dialogue?

VICTOR GARBER: When I first read the script, I came to these four-paragraph speeches, and that always alarms me a little bit because with anything (that long), you really have to figure out how you're going to shape the entire piece. But they're well written, and they have a definite rhythm. So I sort of read it aloud in the privacy of my own home, because I just wanted to get the sound of it – you don’t want to be tripping over your words when you get to the studio. So I had a sense of what I wanted to achieve and it worked out pretty well.

It’s important to prepare and understand the entire script, not just your lines. You don’t want to upstage the other actors. If it’s a scene with two or three or five people, you really basically need to think, “How am I communicating with all these people?” Everybody in this mix makes it whole, and I think they've assembled a really good group of people for this film.

QUESTION: Speaking of the cast, you’re playing opposite Christopher Meloni’s heroic Green Lantern, and you had the opportunity to act with each other in the booth. How was that experience?

VICTOR GARBER: Chris was very disappointing (LAUGHS). Christopher Meloni is a really great actor and I'm a huge fan of his -- the opportunity to work with him was really my incentive to do it. I'm on a little break, I’ve just come back from Morocco, I was jet lagged and my agent called and I thought, “Two days in the studio with Chris Meloni? I can do that.” We had a lot of fun. He really does exude the heroic quality that Green Lantern would embody. It was funny because you’re in the studio and you're focused on the microphone, reading the script – you hear each other in your headphones so you can play off each other, but you don’t really look at each other. And occasionally I would catch a glimpse of him – striking the (super hero) pose. He was definitely in character.

QUESTION: Did your previous work on the stage and screen help prepare you for this style of performance?

VICTOR GARBER: From my experience as an actor, every role you do helps you build a kind of a repertoire of characters that you pull things from unconsciously. This is very different from anything I've done on television or even on stage. But my job as an actor is to imbue it with some sort of authenticity and truth – to make it believable. I didn’t pull anything for Sinestro from any specific character I’ve played in the past. They're all different.

QUESTION: From Nora Ephron to Gus Van Sant to James Cameron, you’ve worked with some impressive directors. What was your impression of your first voiceover under the direction of Andrea Romano?

VICTOR GARBER: Andrea is a task maker. She's brilliant at her job, I have to say. You just feel confident that there's someone in the booth that's really watching out for you. She’s very specific, she knows what she wants, and she's relentless at getting it – which is a great thing because then you know that the product is going to be the best it can be. I had a great time with her.

QUESTION: Based on this first experience, are you interested in doing more voiceovers for animation?

VICTOR GARBER: Well, I hope that people like what we’ve done and I hope I get more work from it, but you never know. It was challenging in that it requires some very specific techniques with the microphone, things that you would do naturally that you can’t do during a voiceover. There are constraints that you're required to pay attention to. But it was completely fun to do and challenging only in the best sense. I’d like to do more.

How come the DC animated movies get such great actors to voice the characters and Marvel hire Yahoos and nobodies?

In my Honestly Opinion Rorschach01 I think Marvel care more about making live action movie now then they do animated movies and their comics.

I think some of these Hollywood movies should be written by some of these animated movie writers. It is funny though how DC is getting good animated flicks and Marvel is doing better live action. Go figure.

I fully look forward to this movie, hell this might be the 1st out of them all that i actually buy on dvd, instead of download. I love Green Lantern such a rich character to portray and give to us. Im hoping and prayin that the Flash gets his dues and finally gets his movie next and also the live action movie portrayed by only Ryan Reynolds and no one else.

I cant wait for this! Since the Wonder Woman animated movie i have been so jazzed about all things DC again. Being that the Feminine persuasion is my greatest strength i loved this flick but especially how WW embodied the strength and drive of men while being at one with her sensuality. OOOOhhhhhh an Island full of Woman!!!!! So i am going to really enjoy the lantern too!

shibazz.. I didnt like the movie becuz it left too many gaping holes and it was inconsistent with the storyline and Wonder Woman was as strong as Ares & was getting her ass kicked. How rude! I wrote about it on WonderVerse thread (read that for the details!) since there was sooo much wrong with the movie and I dont want to rehash it on this thread. haha. If you dont know Wonder Woman then the movie is great! But if you do know her story then you see the problems it had.

http://www.comicbookmovie.com/fansites/wonderverse/news/?a=6529.. All Hail Keri Russell!...The New WONDER WOMAN...in ANIMATION!

The Secret about Wonder Woman.... is not in the movie.. but her history and what it hinted at. The clue is Wonder Woman and the holiday girls. I think you may have said it but I dont understand all you write. you seem... happy! =:) Have a drink for me! You rock!

I've been a fan of the DC animated films since New Frontier. WW was o.k., but they could have made her much more of a powerhouse, and still kept her feminine. As much as she has changed over the years, they seem to keep making the same "two steps forward, one step back" mistake. Superman went from a guy who could dodge bullets and jump over skyscrapers, to a guy who could deflect bullets with his EYEBALLS and FLY! Yet the only change they have made to Wonder Woman is the capability of flight (Thank GOD for the death of the rediculous "invisible plane"!)
GL is, by far, my favorite DC character of all time, and I cannot wait to see what the future has in store for him!
Keep it real DC, keep it real!

Ror: I disagree. Well, not that Marvel doesn't hire nobodies, but that that's why their animated films are not as successful.
Marvel just doesn't seem to give a rip about their animated slate! Plain and simple.
Look... At least DC tries to do innovative, interesting stories. Marvel just seems to throw a $#it load of action at us and say "Are you not entertained!?"

Look at the last couple DC animated films that have been released:

"Justice League: New Frontier" - Great story, older more stylized animation, they followed an interesting, intelligent formula, kept close to the original story, and made even the obscure background characters relatable and important.

"Wonder Woman" - I hate to say it, but DC took a risk with this one, and it payed off. Not because WW is a second tier character, by ANY means, but because of the financial risk banking on whether or not a female action heroine can hold her own. I don't understand the mentality myself, but it's good to know that they WANTED to take the risk, and did so. Again, great story, good dialogue, action was a little muted, but overall it was great fun.

And now "Green Lantern: First Flight". Haven't seen it yet, so I can't say anything other than it looks great visually!
Marvel needs to stop releasing hashed up crap like "Doctor Strange" (terrible), "Young Avengers" (groan), "Ultimate Avengers" (great action, but where's the intricate, heart felt, intelligently written characters here?), and "Iron Man" (same can be said for this one too). "Hulk VS" was o.k., but the Thor story lacked in the attempted vision and scope that was given to Wolverine.

All-in-all, Marvel needs to make the characters resonate with the audience, EVEN (and especially) if it's an animated film! This (to me) is the next logical step from comic to screen, and the sooner both companies realize that, the sooner they will start to reap the benefits!

To: adamant877... "Again, great story, good dialogue, action was a little muted, but overall it was great fun."

With all respect but I have to disagree with you on the Wonder WOman dvd movie. Off the top of my head here are some reasons why I disliked it & I apologise in advance for the length.

Someone stated: "Wonder Woman may not have used her spinning transformation but then again, it did not detract from the overall feel"

It detracted alot from the feeling of you watching a Wonder Woman movie.

When Wonder Woman came running out an alley tugging off her clothes in almost identical fashion of how Superman would as he tugs at his tie to begin undressing. Her "transformation" is what appealed to all the girls, how they identified her as THEIR superhero. It's what she does, it's her THING! Not running & tugging at her clothes as she is running to the rescue. "By spinning in place at blurring speed, she sheds the veils of her civilian identity & reappears in the hard-won mantle of Wonder Woman, her golden lasso completing the transformation." IT'S ONE OF HER POWERS. This goes beyond Lynda Carter & reruns. It always has been her thing in comics & what you expect to see. You EXPECT it.

The dialogue? "I like your rack" passes as witty and clever these days? Trying to get her drunk to "hit it" was entertaining? maybe to a man of lesser caliber...

I did like that they had Alexis, it did add to the movie. Amazons were also thinkers and that was good.

The Amazons storming the beach front coming to the aide of Wonder Woman?...WTF is that? Are you kidding me? SO unrealistic. Are you telling me there was no one who can view U.S. airspace was being violated PRIOR to them touching U.S. soil & the US didnt do anything but scratch their head & wonder at it without sending out any "escorts" to "greet" them? Not one F-14? And the president remained in residence in instead of following protocol & being relocated to safety? BS. I know it's just a comic but give me a break! It's not the adventures of Alice in Wonder Land!!!

They could have at least, to save face, had Steve lead the "escort" & advise them that there were friendlies mixed with hostiles..that would have been more reasonable.

And when Ares raised the army of dead Amazons of past how did they appear in Washington DC? They died on Paradise Island! A little consistency wouldnt go unnoticed.

Steve Trevor was such an ASSS... Wonder WOman may have had moments when she despaired that men were corrupt but she NEVER experienced any negativity with him. He always remained true to form. He never disappointed her or caused her a moments pause in his character hence her softness she had towards him. He was always good, kind and helpful. He wasnt trying to get into her panties.. not in that way.. like this ASS was. His character was more suited for the Flash. Cocky, wiseguy type flash. Not Steve TRevor.

Dont get me wrong I am glad he manned up! His little "damsel in distress" can wear you down. I am glad they made him more of a force to be reckoned with. However, in order to update him to present day and "man him up" he didnt need to be a PIG to be "The Man". You could still be a man, a gentleman without having to be an ASS.

It was so.... disappointing... like watching Batman Beyond or Superman with the same characters just different cartoon with different names..Didnt feel like Wonder Woman.

Phillipus: General of the Amazon Guards & Queen Hippolyta's most trusted advisor & Chancellor of Themyscira.

It was thanks to General Phillipus guidance that Wonder WOman learned to CONTROL her strength, speed, power of flight, her wisdom and wits. Wonder Woman relied on her abilities too much and learned a painful lesson when Phillipus shot her with an arrow to teach WOnder Woman that too much faith in her powers could leave her vulnerable.

Euboea: Captain in the Amazon Guard.

Mnemosyne: A historian

Where do they get Artemis & ALexis from in the movie? That is so inaccurate. Didnt they take the time to research these details? Didnt they care enough to do it right? Artemis comes from another tribe: she is the Chief Warrior or "SHIM TAR" of the Bana-mighdall. The are mixing it all & the people who dont know it flies but the people who do... it's just wrong.

Wonder Woman was getting her ass whooped! big time! Are you kidding me?! she had the same powers as Ares- WTH?!It should have been alot more closed fight than what it was. Granted she closed the deal in the end...still.

Her secret was known? That jackass, Steve, knew her secret? HER IDENTITY! And they were shacking up????? Where is the mystery? the suspense? The allure?

I was left DISAPPOINTED in the end. I liked that it had action and how Steve was more forceful. I loved Alfred Molina & the other voice overs but I feel as though they used this as a test run for the live movie and it was found wanting. And if they did use this as a test run they need to go back and tweak it... I feel as though they just threw some fighting, some little facts and Steve trying to be Rico Suave to pass as flirting & romance and said "there...that should be good enough for them". I felt very let down.

Well, i have read about 3 WW comics in my life so not knowing much of her history i loved that movie. It made me want to read more so that cant be a bad thing can it?

Adamant dude i agree totally, iv always slated Marvels attempts at animated movies, they put hardly any effort into them. Hulk vs i did like but thats it. Iv loved most of Dcs movies. Gotham Knights was fantastic, they really raised the bar for trying new things animation and story wise..with Marvel its always the same old shit animation and silly voices

Gotham Knights Woooo Hooooooo! Batman Rules and the Rest Drool! that being said.... KeepItREal made some really good points although the Spinning thing was never a big deal to me and i have always thought to myself , i would say "self , dont you think the Amazons are shrounded in the Mystical Arts almost like Elves?" so that explained a lot to me. But i am so diggin your passion for the truth and the way of Wonder Woman!!!

Rors: "Elektra Assassin by Frank Miller is one of my favorite graphic novels and i actually really liked Garner as Elektra in Daredevil, so when i heard she was getting a spin off movie i was delighted..thinking of course they would at least partly follow the best solo story that was ever written about her!..But no, of course that would have been too easy so they came up with a cliched, boring, badly scripted load of nonsense."

The Wonder Woman dvd movie is to me what that movie is to you. Hopefully that will help you to understand where I'm coming from. That is what its like for me seeing that Wonder Woman dvd movie. For people who dont know think its great.

"It made me want to read more so that cant be a bad thing can it?"

No, definitely not a bad thing. But then as you learn more about the character it reveals the movie for what it really was... crap.

Thank you Shibazz! =:)

KeepItReal: In retrospect, I agree with you. I guess when it all comes down to it, I WANTED it to be better than it actually was. I've always had this nagging suspicion that there was something missing from Wonder Woman... Some level of credibility that hasn't been met. A level of credibility that I think she so rightly deserves. I know it's not the spin (lol), or the God awful invisible plane, but something that would not only make her stand out amongs the rest, but make her more on par with the other two counterparts of the trinity (Bats & Supes). Maybe I overlooked a few things in my review of the film, but I did like the movie, much like Ror said, it made me want to learn more. And I agree about the fight with Ares, more than you know! (BTW, I can't believe I forgot to mention "Batman: Gotham Knights", that was rookie! lol)
Thanks again for your candor, and for sharing your obvious passion for the character.

P.S. I LOVE the fact that I just got schooled on comics by a girl! (Don't get me wrong, I really mean it!) I mean, a guy my age, to imagine that ten or twenty years ago if I were to ATTEMPT to talk to a girl about comics, I would be met with blank stares, or rolling eyes. Thanks for schooling me. Here's to you, shibazz, and all the other girls on here keeping us guys on our toes... Cheers!

Yeah its very cool @Adamant877 that all of us get the privilege and info of the others and they're passions ! I mean even the crazy F's who show up(myself wayyyy included) and so on. So KeepItReal or KIR fer short , did you love or hate the size difference in Wonder Woman and O'Blue Boy (supies) in "Justice League , The New Fronties" ?

adamant877... "I WANTED it to be better than it actually was.." no one more so than me. I feel the same way about her credibility factor as well. She is just not getting it and she, like you said, she so rightly deserves it. Her spin, lol, I grew up with it! I loved it! Do you know how many times my cousin & I tried it!! LOL... I wont even say.

Her invisible jet I feel has potential & can be done correctly if done with patience and taken seriously. Batman has all these gadgets at his disposal & they make it look good. Why not for Wonder Woman? And his gadgets dont compare to the advance technology that she has in her hands from the Lansanarians. I think as clever and keen Hollywood has gotten in the special effects department- they cant make that work? Update it... streamline it? common! They could make it look more stealth. It's not so much that it's invisible to me about her vehicles but that it's a technology so advanced from aliens that no one on Earth, not even Batman, has it but Wonder Woman. How elite does that make her? This technology she has can morph into ANYTHING she wishes and it will be state of the art. Whether she is out in space, underwater, flying etc..etc... Now if this is something Superman or Batman had Hollywood wouldnt waste anytime making it great. So make it great for Wonder Woman. I am not saying when they make the movie she should have all these super vehicles straight out but bring them out gradually, one here, another in a sequel...Explain how after gaining the Lansanarians technology Diana learned that it was part of an extraterrestrial artifact called The Ring..

There is so much more to Wonder Woman...how could she not be great?! I feel sorry for Megan Fox that she cant see how GREAT Wonder Woman really is, hooker! sorry, it slipped out!

Cheers to you too and thanks.. =:)

Shibazz... "did you love or hate the size difference in Wonder Woman and O'Blue Boy (supies) in "Justice League , The New Fronties" ?"

It was weird! I mean I am used to seeing Wonder Woman a certain way growing up so when I see her like this in the comics or shows its weird for me. I dont think I loved or hated it, being that it made me think it was not Diana but in fact her mom Hippolyta (She was WW from 1942-1950) considering the costume she wore and her look from the Golden age. But they kept calling her Diana? but then again, during that time no one knew there was another Wonder WOman (actually Artemis was Wonder WOman too for awhile when she won the second contest!). I am still trying to work that one out. I loved her voice, she was strong and how she took command. She was in her element if not with a more dark side to her. Definitely has lost her innocence if it was Diana. Her look I wasnt crazy about but if she was her mom..alright (to know which is mother & dau apart from costume)..but if it was Diana... I would rather she not be so big. I always say it: Wonder Woman was strong without sacrificing her femininity. That is a balance they will need to work with when making her live movie. DONT let her be like CHYNA build wise. More like Jessica Biel in Blade III IMHO. What was your take on it?
shibazz
shibazz - 5/8/2009, 3:54 PM
Tall girls make me wanna climb a tree ! that is my take , well cuz thats where the fruit is. I am 5'8" and i dated girls who were averaging 5'10 for a while , some taller , and some shorter but it is exquisite to see a woman who has a command of her femininity and a commanding presence... especially when they care less about either and just are. One of my best friends is 6 foot tall and she is incredibly cool about it. I dont think it even crosses her mind. I love the fact that WW was bigger than Supie Pants cuz it gave her a "Mythological" feel. I think that you might want to start looking at feminity in a broader fashion and start seeing the individuality within the sacred feminine. please dont get me wrong, i am not saying you need to see things differently, just try it for fun:) now that i think about it ,you probably do. awesome!

ooops!so sorry! I think I misunderstood you. You said big and I took it for big as in Chyna big (muscles), not tall. I lOVE Wonder Woman tall!!! She is like 5'11-6'. I think that is so statuesque! so elegant. I WISH I were taller. I think its another reason why I love Wonder Woman so. I am vertically challenged myself! My cousin is 6' and she calls me "shrimp" (how rude!). No, I think being tall is beautiful. The doctor says my daughter possibly will be about 5'7-5'8 when she grows up. She is very tall for her age which I am happy for.

The sacred feminine... I've read about that. =:) this was a misunderstanding.
