Disney-Pixar's Incredibles 2 was already the top-grossing animated movie of all time domestically, but this weekend the film hit another new milestone. According to Box Office Mojo's latest figures, the sequel to 2004's animated superhero flick eclipsed the $600 million mark at the domestic box office. It's the first animated movie to reach such a milestone.
As previously mentioned, Incredibles 2 was already the highest grossing animated movie domestically, topping Pixar's own Finding Dory ($486M). The film has also found incredible success at the worldwide where it's a part of the billion dollar box office club. Its worldwide haul of $1.16 billion is just short of Disney Animation's Frozen, which is the current highest-grossing animated movie worldwide.
The success of Incredibles 2 spans far beyond just animated films as well. It's currently the fourth highest-grossing superhero movie domestically, trailing only Marvel Studios' Black Panther ($700m), Avengers: Infinity War ($678m), and The Avengers ($623m). It ranks in the top 10 worldwide as well.
It took 14 years for the Parr family to return to the big screen and some of Incredibles 2's box office success can be attributed to fans' excitement in seeing their favorite superhero family in action once again. But with the sequel breaking all sorts of box office records, is Disney willing to wait another decade before another follow-up? Writer-director Brad Bird remains firm in his refusal to turn the franchise into a "cash grab" as we see so often in Hollywood.
So while it may be a while before we see the Parr family on another adventure, fans can relive the excitement of Incredibles 2 when it arrives digitally on October 23 and on 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray, and DVD on November 6.
