It was announced last year that the premiere episode of The Simpsons 26th season would feature the death of a well-known character.
In an interview with TV Line, Producer Al jean has shed some light on the upcoming death:
"People who reported on it then reported we were killing an 'iconic' character; I'd like to say it's a great character, but I never used the word 'iconic'"
Continuing:
"It's a terrific character and it [happens in] our premiere this coming year. But just because a character is dying, that doesn't mean he (or she) won't pop up in a future episode."
Comparing the death to Game of Thrones, Jean said: '
This is going to be a bigger deal than King Joffrey on Game of Thrones - the Yellow Wedding!'
The character that dies is portrayed by an actor who won an Emmy for playing that character.
Hank Azaria reassured fans that his characters are safe:
"I honestly didn't know who it was going to be. And now I do know... I can say that it's not one of mine."
Sideshow Bob, Barney Gumble and Abe Simpson are all tipped as the character in question.
