RUGRATS Revived For A New Animated TV Series And Live-Action/CGI Hybrid Movie

Nickelodeon is in the midst of reviving a number of beloved animated properties from the 1990s and now Rugrats is going to be next. It's been confirmed today that Paramount Pictures and Nickelodeon are relaunching the TV series with an initial 26-episode order and that will be accompanied by a live-action movie featuring CGI characters (presumably because the babies they're all able to talk).

"Rugrats is hands-down one of the most celebrated cartoons in TV history, and we are thrilled for a whole new audience to meet these iconic characters in brand-new adventures," Interim Nickelodeon President Sarah Levy said in a statement. "What was true in 1991 when the original show premiered is still true today: kids are fascinated with the world of babies. We can’t wait for today’s kids to meet Tommy, Chuckie and pals." The nostalgia factor and new fans could combine to make this film a hit.

We'll have to wait and see on that front but what we do know is that Rugrats' original creators Arlene Klasky, Gábor Csupó and Paul Germain will serve as executive producers on both projects, while the movie is being written by David Goodman. It's been given a release date of November 13th, 2020.

Grew up on Rugrats but I don't think I want this. Rather have an announcement that a new Avatar series is in the works

Seeing how "Hey Arnold: The Jungle Movie" worked out well, they can do no wrong with this Nick Show I have fond memories of! Though I have some concerns on the live-action adaptation, which I hope isn't another "Look Who's Talking" or "Baby Geniuses".

Rugrats was on for 11 years. What's the point of rebooting it if you've already exhausted it?

And a live action/CGI movie. Oh that's gonna be creepy.

@KWilly - I have no problem with them adding more content for the fans of the series. Especially for the kids who grew up on the series who are having their own kids to enjoy the next generation of Rugrats. As for the live-action film filled with CGI? I have those exact same sentiments as you. They should have kept it all animated. Even if they did it like Pixar or Dreamworks if they didn't want to do a 2D animated film. That would have been better than whatever abomination comes out with this upcoming hybrid mess.

I loved Rugrats as a kid, it is still one of my favourite nostalgic cartoons ever. However, I don't think a reboot is necessary, but what's even worse is the concept of a "live-action movie featuring CGI characters" Why? Just why? Who thinks that's a smart idea? :S

@hypersonic55 - You see, I don't have a problem with a reboot or loose continuation of the series. This way a new generation of kids can get into the show, and enjoy what we grew up with. As for the second part, I fully agree. I'm not gonna repeat what I said in my other replies, but I will say this. There are other Nickelodeon properties that make much more sense for a live-action film mixed with CGI than this one. This Rugrats film is a disaster waiting to happen. This would have been better for something like Ahhh Real Monsters or some other Nick property that isn't the Rugrats, or focuses mainly on kids, but other creatures or animals. Or even the extreme like Rocket Power because those kids surfed some huge waves.

I guess it could be another Scooby Doo...

@VoiceofReason - Or a "Son of the Mask" with how cartoony the kid in that film was. They'll probably do something similar for this movie.

@Beerus - I more meant like they can make a new version of it for each generation.

Nickelodeon is way passed its prime and glory and trying to redeem itself by bringing back classic series for the modern audience today won't make the same impact it did when they first premiered. Did anyone actually asked for this? I know that they have that Rocko special coming out in the fall and Double Dare came back recently, but can they survive today's crowd?

"The film will reportedly be a mix of live-action and CGI"... Oh boy, that doesn't sound good.

@L0RDbuckethead - Yeah, I don't think there are many people out there that would want to see that version of the Rugrats. Nickelodeon would have been better off, and would see more success, if they just stick to doing it animated. Even if they don't want to do it with 2D animation, the Pixar and Dreamsworks style would work best for the world of Rugrats.

They'd be more successful dedicating a Nickelodeon channel solely to 90s and early 2000s Nickelodeon. Live action shows, animated, game shows, all of it.

@Kevwebsz - Or just getting into the streaming game under Viacom's leading service, and all the sibling channels.

Loved the show but I couldn't care less about a revival. It probably won't live up to the original too.

I love nostalgia, and I'm guilty of watching Rugrats recently. But where is the NEW Rugrats, and I don't mean bringing it back. I mean, where are the innovators?

A reboot and a live-action cgi movie. I could only react this way...

Honestly out of all the Nicktoons that could get live action movies I think Danny Phantom would work best. Could act as a sequel of sorts to the original series where he's a bit older.
Beerus
Beerus - 7/17/2018, 11:22 AM
@kRAVENklaw - Oooh, that would make for a decent film actually. Also I agree, a continuation to that series would be great. That being said though, another live-action film based off a Nick series that could work is Rocket Power, and maybe Ahhh, Real Monsters. Nickelodeon has some great properties, they just need to be smart on how they use them.

@Beerus -
Out of all Nicktoons I want to see reimagined though, even though SpongeBob is still going strong, I've always wanted a Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy comic series.
