Akira fans have been waiting to hear what WB's plans are for the live action version of the classic Manga/Anime. Now Variety are the bearer of great or awful news depending on how you feel about this adaptation.

Warner Bros. has greenlit its remake of 'Akira.' In July, Warners tapped Spanish helmer Jaume Collet-Serra (''Orphan,'' ''Unknown'') to direct the live-action version of the anime cult hit at a lower revised budget of $90 million..Production on the pic is set for a late February / early March start.

One very interesting addition to this info is the news that as well as Leonardo DiCaprio's Appian Way producing the movie, the creator of the original Manga and director of the '80s Anime version Katsuhiro Otomo is on board as exec-producer. That at least should give fans a little more encouragement. WB had struggled to find a cast for the movie with big names such as Keanu Reeves and Brad Pitt apparently declining offers. Maybe they should look to slightly younger actors by about, oh I dunno, 25 years? More info if and when we have it but for now what do you guys think of this development?

UPDATE: Variety's Josh Dickey just posted this update:

With a greenlight in place, studio can begin shopping for the two main male leads; sources tell Variety that the studio is high on "Tron: Legacy" star Garrett Hedlund, who's considered a front-runner. Both Warners and Collett-Sera have been keen on the thesp, but had to wait for a budget and a greenlight to make their move. Though no offer's been made, insiders say it's only a matter of time.

Only 90 Million? And I thought this couldn't get any worse.

"Unknown" wasn't horrible, but it wasn't terrific either. Why does everything need to be a reboot nowadays? What happened to originality?

Damnit!! Haven't Warner Bros heard of the expression "if it ain't broke, don't fix it"? Well. it applies in this situation here.

BTW, I made an article on why we should let this project die. It's right here.

I'm withholding judgement until I see the trailer. But I'd be lying if I said I wasn't looking forward to this.

Ugh.

Lower budget's good news, though. Forces the directors to pull out all the stops with their creativity.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!

They had better not go with the ideas that they have mentioned previously!

I don't want the climax of the film to be in a [frick]ing bowling alley!

@Brew, it is one of the most complex things to come out of Japan in the 80s or 90s.

It is hardly for little kids. The graphic content alone is too much.

@brewtownpsych

Don't make me laugh, a good 80% of anime out right now is better and more complex than half the garbage that's on America television these days or the garbage that is going in American Cartons and Comic books.

The Matrix only cost $68,000,000 to make and it had groundbreaking special effects, was rated R, and was a damn good movie. 90 million should be enough, it all depends on how they spend it.

Scuse me, it cost 63 million to make. My mistake.

i hope they do well. i more see the guy from Tron as kaneda, although i guess he could really be cast as either.

good news that the creator of the manga and director of the anime is the lead producer on the film, (like how george martin is an exec producer on game of thrones).

anyway it'll be interesting to see who they cast in the lead roles
